(CNN)- Robert Aaron Long, the suspect in the shootings that left eight people dead at three Atlanta-area Asian spas, has been indicted on murder charges, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty for hate crimes targeting the sex and race of the victims, according to a source familiar with the criminal investigation.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis filed notice Tuesday that she plans to seek the death penalty and enhanced hate crimes charges against Long in the first test of the hate crime law passed by the Georgia Legislature last year, according to the source.
The law specifies enhanced penalties for crimes where victims were targeted for, among other things, race, gender, and sexual orientation. Seven of the victims killed in the spa shootings were women, and six of the victims were women of Asian descent.

【種族歧視】唐人街的安全監督員
每個工作日的早上6點至9點，拉薩彭通（Sakhone Lasaphangthong）都會在加州奧克蘭的唐人街巡邏，擦掉牆上的塗鴉、給露宿者送一份麥當勞、與商鋪老闆們寒暄幾句、跟買菜的老婦人打個招呼。他是奧克蘭唐人街商會（Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce）聘請的「大使」，工作職責是監督這個社區，確保唐人街的清潔和安全」。
阿拉梅達縣地區檢察官稱，今年2月，奧克蘭的唐人街在短短兩周內發生了18宗針對亞裔美國人的襲擊活動。3月16日在亞特蘭大按摩店發生的槍擊事件造成八人死亡，其中包括六名亞洲女性。這是美國各地針對亞裔暴力浪潮的最新事件。非牟利組織「停止反亞裔仇恨」（Stop AAPI Hate）的數據顯示，自新冠疫情爆發以來，已經發生了大約3800宗針對亞裔美國人的仇恨事件，其中大多數是語言騷擾，11％的案例則存在人身攻擊。
美國多個城市正在啟動或考慮採取試驗項目，通過社會和醫療保健工作者而非警察來應對精神健康方面的問題，與此同時，奧克蘭唐人街的拉薩彭通等人已經在制定以社區為本的安全計劃。拉薩彭通每天上午工作結束後，其他巡邏人員會繼續在整個街區來回巡視。他們在本地的商戶門口張貼傳單，為弱勢群體提供護送服務，時刻保持警惕。
