[The Five Sacred Instruments]
There are two types of shaman in Taoist practice: “Wen- Ji and Wu- Ji”. Both types lend their body to the gods as the vessel for the spirits to be presented in the physical world; the one main difference is Wu-Ji would use instruments once the body taken over by the gods but Wen- Ji just uses chanting.
Handling of the five sacred instruments is a Wu- Ji specialty once it’s been possessed by the gods.
The Five Sacred Instruments include a seven-star sword, a nail stick (brass rod and wolf tooth stick), a moon ax (moon eyebrow ax, double ax), a nail-studded ball and a Sawfish Sword.
The handling of the five sacred instruments is when the Wu- Ji shaman uses the instruments to self-mutilate him or herself to show that, by being possessed by the gods, the power of the gods would protect the shaman from injuries and pain. This is to signified the power of the gods, and to suppress evil spirits. Usually the shamans self-mutilation is done on either the back or the head.
The five sacred instruments also signifies the five military camps of the gods from five different directions: east, west, south, north, and center. Therefore the handling of five sacred instruments also means the command of the five military camps.
The gods whom are most commonly seen at the handling of the five sacred instruments are Nuochia and/ or Xuan Tian, both are male military general type gods.

For all the corporates & production houses making Gawai (Harvest Festival) ads. Misrepresentation harms our people.
Keep in mind:
1. Gawai is steeped in adat and sacred rituals
2. Gawai is not celebrated by all indigenous groups in Sarawak. Though every one enjoys the celebrations, it hosted primarily (but not exclusively) by the Bidayuh and Iban. Bidayuh and Iban are two different groups, though both under the “Dayak” umbrella. There are numerous different types of Bidayuh groups.
3. Key elements of Gawai are dancing, music, rice, tuak (rice wine) and pig & chicken slaughter
4. When using music by local musicians, DO NOT take their music from YouTube and use it for your ad without asking the musician (like one corporate did last year 🙄). Do not assume the use is for free (do you realise how long and difficult it is to learn these instruments??)
5. When using music for your Gawai ads, bear in mind that our traditional music have meaning and contexts. Not all instrumental music merely “sound nice”, they have a purpose.
6. Sape’ is from the Orang Ulu Community. Bidayuh and Iban and other communities that celebrate Gawai have other beautiful and powerful tunes and instruments they play during the celebrations. Do your research.
7. Gawai and Kaamatan are similar, not the same. If you’re going to have a “GawaiKaamatan” ad, you might as well have a “1 Jan / Chinese New Year / Hijri New Year” ad rolled into one. While we’re on the topic, we are not “SabahSarawak”, we are different states.
8. Lastly, if you’re a corporate reading this, I’d encourage you to work with local Sarawakian production houses to develop the Gawai story.
Don’t assume - ask, research, verify. Misrepresentation harms our people. And there is SO much misrepresentation out there.
Peace & love,
Alena

一個四歲的小孩,該知道的事...
好文共讀,應該來給他翻成中文呴...
"That the single biggest predictor of high academic achievement and high ACT scores is reading to children. Not flash cards, not workbooks, not fancy preschools, not blinking toys or computers, but Mom or Dad taking the time every day or night (or both!) to sit and read them wonderful books."
"That our children deserve to be surrounded by books, nature, art supplies and the freedom to explore them. Most of us could get rid of 90 percent of our children’s toys and they wouldn’t be missed, but some things are important — building toys like LEGOs and blocks, creative toys like all types of art materials (good stuff), musical instruments (real ones and multicultural ones), dress up clothes and books, books, books. (Incidentally, much of this can be picked up quite cheaply at thrift shops.) They need to have the freedom to explore with these things too "

ASIAN STEREOTYPES CHECKLIST | AMWF
I’m Nina, a whitey European girl!
We all know the numerous Asian stereotypes out there. I compiled a list of the main stereotypes and compared them with my Asian boyfriend, Kento, just to see how Asian he really is (unofficially and unscientifically).
[Note: This isn't meant to offend anyone, it's more a lighthearted take on Asian stereotypes]
For those wondering, he is half Japanese and half Chinese.
The Asian stereotypes we looked at were:
- Asians know martial arts
- Asians are good at technology
- Asians are good at math
- Asians know how to play musical instruments (probably the piano)
- Asians are not athletic
- Asians are into cars
- Asians are rich
- Asians look young for their age
- Asians are super family-oriented
- Asians cant grow facial hair
- Asians are short
- Asians have skinny legs
- Asians have small butts
- Asians have small slanty eyes
- Asians have no B.O. (body odour)
- Asians have no body hair
- Asians have small......
I’m sure I missed a few stereotypes. If I did, let me know in the comments below!
How Asian are YOU??
