Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which assembles iPhones for Apple Inc., has acquired a six-inch wafer fabrication plant from Macronix International Co., Ltd., as part of its efforts to venture into the automotive semiconductor market.
【Market Commentary】Not only are there relatively few companies manufacturing tools for 8-inch wafer fabrication today, but it is also both time- and cost-prohibitive for equipment manufacturers to restart production of 8-inch equipment.
These factors, combined with relatively low wafer selling prices, mean that foundries will find it unprofitable to expand their 8-inch capacities except through M&A, secondhand equipment purchases, or long-term commitments with customers to balance cost and profitability.
