媽祖是古時候的宋朝人，她的本名叫「林默娘」，從小就相當相當聰明，讀經書過目不忘。
媽祖十三歲的時後遇見一位道士傳授祂法術，十六歲時又得到一對神仙銅符，從此之後就有了神通，可以斬妖除魔。
媽祖二十八歲的時後，祂的父親出海補魚遇到船難，媽祖為了救她父親而喪身，死後升天得道，時常在漆黑的海上拯救遭遇海難的漁民，漸漸成為大陸沿海及台灣一帶人民普遍信仰神，更成為航海人的守護神。
我們的祖先在三百多年前從大陸移民到台灣，其中要坐船經過俗稱黑水溝的台灣海峽，時常發生船難而喪生。於是就有人在移民搭船時，帶著媽祖神像當作守護神，平安抵達台灣後，落地生根在台灣開墾，也替媽祖蓋廟，經過三百多年來，媽祖已經成為我們台灣人民普遍信仰的神明。

So some people used the statue of Mazu as a patron saint when they boarded the ship. After they arrived in Taiwan safely, they took root in Taiwan and opened a temple for Mazu.
