🌷Why did Lin Daiyu bury the flowers? What is the meaning behind the act of burying flowers?
🌺Lin Daiyu pities the fallen flowers as she feels that burying them in the soil is the cleanest method to send them on their last journey. This shows her unique understanding of beauty. Using flowers as a metaphor for herself, she wrote the “Elegy for Fallen Flowers”, one of the most beautiful poems in “The Dream of Red Mansions”. Lin Daiyu’s tenderness is not the typical kind of weakness most people have. She wasn’t crying without good reason when she buried the flowers. Lin Daiyu, who has an unusually high emotional intelligence, doesn’t even care about earthly jewelry and treasures. So why would she care about withering flowers? Of course, she knew that the cycle of flowers blooming and withering is a natural phenomenon.
🌸However, with her extraordinary emotional intelligence, she managed to associate the fate of women and even the fate of all humanity with the flowers. “Each year for three hundred and sixty days, the cutting wind and biting frost contend.” But, how long can beauty flower fresh and fair? She thought of her own life, fate, and future, and wondered “who will care for the fallen blossom or dead maid”.
🥀We humans are like sojourners in the world, our journey lasts for only a few decades. Likening the fate of all human beings to the cycle of flowers blooming and withering, Lin Daiyu couldn’t help but be sad. However, ordinary people could not understand this kind of sentiment, and instead, jeered at her. It is a great prejudice to misunderstand high emotional intelligence as simply weakness, as many have.

Did you know that Poland did not adopt Latin names for months and has its own unique names? Unlike many other European countries that derive the names of the months from the Roman names of gods, caesars' or numbers, Polish names of the months take their origins in farmers' calendar. Check out their unique names in the list below.
-
1. Styczeń - stykać means "to meet" - "to join" since the old year "meets the new year in January
2. Luty - luty in old Polish means "fierce", "bitter frost", "freezing cold"
3. Marzec - from marznac meaning " to freeze". Some people believe that this name comes also from Roman God "Martius" - in Polish Mars.
4. Kwiecień - from kwiecie - flowers - a blooming month.
5. Maj - this is the only name which was adopted from Roman calendar devoted to goddess Maia. Maia was the Roman female deity of growth or fertility. This name gained its own meaning in the Polish language, for instance as majowka- the outdoor trip.
6. Czerwiec - from czerw meaning "grab" - the larva of a bee or moth. In this month people were picking up the larves, dry them in the sun, and then made from it a red or purple die (pigment); therefore the name "czerw" comes from "redden" and some sources also derive the name of Polish June from a Polish word "czerwienic" - to redden or rippen
7. Lipiec - from lipa - "linden tree" - which flowers in that time; this tree is very popular in Poland. There is a famous poem by Kochanowski "Na lipe" (about Linden tree) - "gosciu siadz pod ma lipa a odpoczyn sobie" - "dear visitor -please sit under my linden tree and relax".
8. Sierpień - sierp is "a sickle" used for harvesting (tool to cut the hay, grass or wheat)
9. Wrzesień - from wrzosy - "heather" that beautifully purple in that time of the year
10. Październik - from paździerz - wooden dry part remained from flax or hemp. In the past flax and hemp was used for making cloths. In that time of the year the wind was carrying out "paździerze" - the wooden waste remained after flax and hemp - all over the fields.
11. Listopad - padajace liscie - falling leaves.
12. Grudzień - gruda - hardened ground which is caused by cold weather.

This is an English cover of "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana" (The Only Flower in the World), a well-known song performed by Japanese boy band SMAP (founded in 1988 and disbanded just last year in 2016), with lyrics by singer-songwriter Noriyuki Makihara.
While I usually create my own translations, there was already a fantastic English version of this song by Hiromi De Young (YouTube linked below in the credits), and a great translation of the chorus by Nelson Babin-Coy (channel also linked). I used my favorite parts of each of these and made a few of my own changes.
I hope this song's message of acceptance and uniqueness reaches a larger audience through my cover.
Enjoy!
*Note: As usual, most of the translation is very close to the original meaning, but the second pre-chorus (the verse starting with "I saw a small flower...") is actually quite different from the original. However, I loved these lyrics so much that I kept them :)
The original meaning of the verse in Japanese is:
I didn't even know his name
But he gave me a smile that day
Just like a flower that was blooming
In a place where nobody would notice it

Enjoy!
I saw a small flower as I walked by
It stretched from the shadows to reach for the sky
I thought to myself, what if I was that way
Reaching for my own dream and saying...

(No. 1 ni naranakute mo ii)
Only one
(moto-moto tokubetsu na "Only one")
I saw all the flowers lined up on display
The shop full of colors with their scented embrace
We all have a blossom we like more than the rest
But I think, with flowers, they all are the best
No fighting or envy, they never contend
But smile in the sunlight and sway in the wind
They all know their mission, it fills them with pride
Everyone is different yet all are alike
I wonder why people must always compare
And judge one another it seems so unfair
To place color, status, and looks to the test
For how can these show us who’s the best?
Just like these flowers
In the whole wide world, you are one of a kind
Cherish your uniqueness, no, you don't need to hide it
Each one of us holds our own special seed
So just be true to you, that's all you'll ever need
A man stood beside me and peered with a sigh
He puzzled and pondered but could not decide
With so many flowers and various hues
All were so pretty, which one should he choose?
Suddenly, a big smile broke out on his face
Flowers in all different colors and shapes
He gathered up a bouquet with one of each kind
Hugging them softly with joy in his mind
I saw a small flower as I walked by
It stretched from the shadows to reach for the sky
I thought to myself, what if I was that way
Reaching for my own dream and saying...
(sou sa bokura mo sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana)
(hitori hitori chigau tane wo motsu)
(sono hana wo sakaseru koto dake ni)
(isshou-kenmei ni nareba ii)
Small flowers, big flowers, all kinds of flowers
You will never find one that’s just like any other
So you don’t need to struggle to be number one
Just be yourself because there’s only one
La la la la...

Long time no see, YouTube! Sorry for the lull in the last couple of months—I recently
moved and haven't had time to make any videos for a while...
Here is my first video from my new home in the U.S., an English cover of Ikimono-gakari's
SAKURA (meaning "Cherry Blossoms"). For those of you in Japan (or somewhere with
cherry blossoms), they must be just about in bloom right now, aren't they? The blossoms in
Japan were on my mind while I sang this song. I hope you enjoy it :)

(sakura hirahira mai-orite ochite)
(yureru omoi no take wo daki-shimeta)
(kimi to haru ni negai-shi ano yume wa)
(ima mo miete iru yo)
(sakura mai-chiru)
Past the windowpane of the swaying train
Traces of you by the river
On the bridge we crossed together
Colored in spring revelry
Graduation day came and took away
My love so far from this town
The flowers hanging on the boughs
Still hold those memories
But the two of us, we chose two different roads
Separated when spring came to a close
Now the future blooming in all of its glory pushes me to move on
In the train window reflected
Just the same are the cherry blossoms
And deep inside of me, your voice still lingers
Still hear it calling to me
When the cherry blossoms start to flutter down toward my feet
I let all my wavering feelings wash completely over me
Oh, the dreams we dreamt together in the spring will always be
In my heart forever and ever, as the spring begins anew
In the letter I started many times
Got as far as “I’m doing fine”
But I know that little lie will never fool you
Seasons come and go, and before I know
Spring arrives once more in this place
And the flowers bloom like always
Paint the town in vibrant hues
Every day without you that I get through
Brings adulthood closer into view
I wonder if a day will come when I forget everything
Hope you know I truly loved you
As I reach to the cherry blossoms
And everything I feel, the love and heartbreak
Is swallowed up in the spring
When the cherry blossoms start to flutter down toward my feet
I embrace the wavering feelings that are washing over me
Oh, the words so bold you gave me in the spring will always be
In my heart forever and ever, as the flowers flutter away
(sakura hirahira mai-orite ochite)
(yureru omoi no take wo daki-shimeta)
Distant days we dreamt together in the spring so long ago
Disappear up into the blue sky
Now the cherry blossoms start to flutter down toward my feet
As I walk toward the days that wait beyond the spring for me
Holding on so dearly to the dream we vowed that we would seek
In my heart forever and ever
(sakura mai-chiru)
