英國南邊的白堊斷崖其實是浮游綠藻的骨骸沉積。經過百萬年後，海底的微生物百骨塚成為海平面上的觀光勝地，在天好的日子，從對面的法國港口便能遠眺英國南方海峽連綿的白色峭壁群。

我的英國前房東曾跟我提過，Seven Sisters Cliff 所在的 Brighton 一帶，在 70 年代時曾經是已婚人士的偷情地點。不僅因為這裡是最靠近倫敦的海邊之一，也因為在當年英國政策下，男女去飯店 check-in 必須檢查身份證，確定彼此是配偶才能入住，Brighton 卻是例外。旅宿業者睜一隻眼、閉一隻眼，賺取情夫情婦的錢。據說當時 Brighton 熱鬧非凡。

十月下旬的英國早已經是迎來大衣上身的天氣了，Brighton 的人潮也少了。我們坐在白堊斷崖下曬太陽，旁邊南歐來的兩個婆婆脫到只剩內衣在曬日光浴。同行的朋友說，去年夏天，一名南韓的女學生在懸崖邊拍照時腳滑落崖死亡，可能就掉落在我們躺著的這片礫石灘上。

回家後查了新聞，那名女孩子到此獨遊，央請同是韓國人的路人幫忙拍照。事發後警方破解女子的手機，看見幫忙拍照的路人在她落崖前拍了六張照片，緊鄰崖邊。
