PUBLIC SPEAKING PRO TIP #3: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE!
This is one of the most important keys to being a successful public speaker. At the end of the day, whether you are hosting a gala event of 200 or holding an exclusive workshop for 20, the most crucial factor is to be able to engage with your audience, hold their attention and ultimately deliver your message in a memorable way.
Step 1: DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Make sure you know your audience demographic, approx age, and interests. Are they mostly the same nationality or a mixed crowd with different cultures? This can have a big effect on the language you use and how you deliver your message. Are they younger or older? This affects the way you address them, how formal you need to be and the jokes you make.
Step 2: RESEARCH THE TOPIC: Knowing your topic inside and out can help you craft the wording and language that will best suit your audience. Knowing also the level of understanding the audience has of your topic is key. You may have to break in down or allow for interaction if the topic is something the audience is not that familiar with. Researching the material of your presentation, whether is be in a board room or at a product launch makes you the authority on it, which will in turn boost your confidence.
Step 3: KNOW YOUR PURPOSE: What are you there to do? Entertain? Inform? Interview? Each event has a different purpose. You don’t want to be too casual at a formal panel discussion not too stiff at an after party. Find out beforehand what the venue is like, the format of the event, who else is sharing the stage and ultimately your end goal for that specific public speaking engagement.
Step 4: CONNECT WITH THE AUDIENCE: Eye contact! Gestures! Open and warm expressions! Jokes! Questions! These are all ways to connect and interact with your audience. When your audience is engaged, they are more open to your message delivery and more likely to overlook any mishaps or stumbles you may make. On the other hand, if you come across robotic or detached, it’s harder for them to appreciate what you are trying to tell them.

PUBLIC SPEAKING PRO TIP#2 - SPEAK UP! 🎤🎤🎤
1. SLOW DOWN - It’s sometimes difficult to as you tend to speak faster when you are nervous and excited. Slowing down gives more time for your brains to catch up with your mouth and will lessen the chance of messing up or fumbling over your words. (PS. The right pace for public speaking usually feels much slower to you but sounds just right to the audience)
2. SPEAK FROM YOUR BELLY NOT YOUR THROAT - Slowing down and speaking from your belly with a loud deep voice will make you sound more confident and authoritative. Your audience will appreciate hearing a deeper and calmer voice over an excited squeaky childlike voice that comes from speaking from your throat. Again this comes down to calming your nerves and breathing properly before you start to speak. (It’s not easy! I really have to remind myself to lower my voice before I speak)
3. WARM UP- just like a singer warms up before she does a performance, so should you as a public speaker. Warm your voice up with voice exercises or practicing your speech or presentation out loud in the same volume that you would do on stage. This allows you to hear the words clearly as they come out of your mouth and make any adjustments to phrases or sentences that don’t flow easily and could possibly make you stumble.
4. BREATHE - Breathing is the key to everything! Practice where you pause to breathe and after which word, will not only accentuate each sentence properly, it will help you feel more confident in control and clearheaded. Take several deep breaths before you go on stage to calm those nerves. And remember, it’s ok to pause at moments to catch your breath if you need to!
5. WATCH WHAT YOU EAT - Avoid creamy or milky foods before you speak in public as this will only coat your throat and increase mucus secretion. Cold water is also not recommended because it constricts your vocal cords. Stick to warm water with a squeeze of lemon, or in my case a glass of red wine to warm me up 😉 (but not more than that or else you may get silly 🥴)
Let me know which one works for you! GOOD LUCK GUYS!

PUBLIC SPEAKING PRO TIP#1:
BODY LANGUAGE
1. Use your entire body when speaking or presenting on stage. Whether it be a school presentation, TED Talk, class lecture or event hosting, your ONSTAGE PRESENCE is one of the most important ways to project confidence and charisma and engage with your audience.
2. Move naturally: shift your weight from one foot to the other or take small steps around the stage. This can help get rid of excess nervous energy but be careful not to pace back and forth.
3. Use your hands and arms to make your point. Emphasizing key moments with a hand gesture is a great way to keep audience interested in what you have to say.
4. Keep your posture! Shoulders back, back straight, and chest open will make you look more trustworthy and engaging.
5. Don’t forget to breathe. Breathing properly while speaking in public is key to allowing the rest of your body to move naturally and not look too rigid or stiff.
Practice these tips to make your next speaking engagement SPOT ON. Good luck!
