Tien joining in @josephschooling’s race.
TLDR: sport is more than just results.
Watching the Olympics with Tien has brought us so much joy. To be able to share our love for sport with our son is such a privilege. Even more exciting is when we support our @teamsingapore athletes and get to point out our singapore flag- the perfect lead up to Singapore’s national day IMO.
Tien’s gotten more screen time this period that he has his whole life 😂 but it’s so worth it. He’s watched and learnt about so many sports already. We talk to him about certain concepts and values- maybe he’s a bit young. But I’m pretty sure he understood some of it too. Like when we share how even though it’s just the athlete competing, there’s a whole team supporting that athlete -coach etc.
There’s so much more we want to teach him. But for now I think he’s gotten the key points. Everyone tries their best and has an inspiring story, making it to the start line is an accomplishment on its own, and there is so much work and people that goes on behind the scenes. Oh- and to try and have fun along the way. P/S: so excited for athletics to begin!!!

Today we issued graduation emails to those in the first two intakes of RTS Malaysia Level 1.
When we were reviewing the results of Intake 1 Mark said to me “either I’ve made the questions too easy or you’re teaching this too well!”
-
It’s probably more the latter than the former. This course isn’t about the exam, because:
- if you’ve got a solid professional background,
- if you take notes carefully during class
- if you ensure you understand the concepts I put across at the time
... it’s not too hard. The hard bit is that we don’t just teach you a syllabus to pass an exam.
-
A lot of certifications exist and are acquired so the certifiers can sell coaches a cert which the coach can use to make money. They make the information appear conclusive, as if it’s all one needs to know to coach. A materialistic product sold for a materialistic outcome.
-
Why do we have an exam then?
- Attendees have a sense of a achievement from passing it
- they take notes more furiously knowing they’re getting tested
- it’s a good way to confirm they understood what we intended to teach.
-
It’s not about a syllabus. The reality is that this learning process goes on forever. Yes, there are the basic foundational facts that one needs to know to be a capable, responsible practitioner... but the rest of the never-ending educational journey requires thought processes and mindset. The goal is not having students come across every exam question and trying to recall a memorised answer. It’s about being able to think it through and come to a conclusion.
-
We’re here to prepare attendees for the real world, full of fanciful ideas borne out of creativity not science, and spurious claims by those who know outlandish statements get traction. It’s so good to know those attending are “getting it” so well.
-
Oh, and if you’re curious, if attendees don’t pass, that’s on me. Retakes are free every 2 months and I’ll spend as long as it takes and someone is willing to put in to get their understanding where it needs to be to think their way through the exam.

【理論與訓練法之間的體用關係】
《The System: Soviet Periodization Adapted for the American Strength Coach》是一本由美國教練所寫的訓練書,我個人非常喜歡,比最早從蘇聯引進週期訓練的圖德.
Johnny Parker, Al Miller, Rob Panariello With Jeremy Hall, “The System: Soviet Periodization Adapted for the American Strength Coach”, p20:
At the Soviet Central Institute of Physical Culture and Sport Scientific Research Laboratory, Professors Yuri Verkhoshansky and Leonid Matveyev were developing plyometric training progressions for power development and refining their periodization methods to ensure their athletes’ progress. On one of our trips, a coach told us that theory often determines practice; however, in their view, practice should determine theory. Rather than the Russian sports scientists dictating what the coaches should do, they looked for the processes producing results and then determined why they worked.
There was a strong bond in the Soviet Union between the coaching and science professionals; however, in the long run, it seemed that the “eye of the coach” and coaching experience determined more than the scientists when it came to what was to be done. Following that model certainly helped accelerate the Russian advances of training concepts well beyond the American methods.

One of Dan Lok’s passions in life is martial arts. Like many young kids, after watching a Bruce Lee movie, it changed his life forever. At 17 years old, Dan started training in martial arts seriously because he was being bullied in school. It wasn’t long for Dan to learn the techniques he needed, and gain the confidence necessary to defend himself.
Dan has studied with legendary martial artist such as Bruce Lee’s original student Ted Wong (http://tedwongjkd.net) and Joe Lewis “The Worlds Greatest Fighter” (http://joelewisassociation.com), making him a second generation student of Bruce Lee - in Bruce Lee's authentic art of Jeet Kune Do (JKD). He's also a third generation student of Ip Man (Wing Chun Kung Fu).
Dan has also trained with other great instructors like Sifu Adam Chan (https://www.pragmaticmartialarts.com), Canadian lightweight boxing champion Tony "Fire Kid" Pep (https://www.facebook.com/pepboxing), and Octavio Quintero (https://www.theartofjkd.com)
For Dan, martial arts training permeates every area of life. It’s not a hobby, it’s a way of life, and it influences how he does business.
Martial arts gave him the confidence, focus, and patience to push through these obstacles and to keep fighting when he felt like giving up.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Dan is NOT a full-time martial artist and he doesn't even claim to be that good of a fighter.
He's simply a successful businessman who enjoys the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee, just like you.
He doesn't have any online martial art videos, seminars or expensive "private training" to sell you. Quite frankly, he doesn't need the money.
He simply wants to share his passion for the art of JKD (his own version of Jeet Kune Do) through his YouTube channel.
