I think it’s important to work on a mix of commissioned and personal work as an artist. Though I have to admit it’s been a bit more challenging working on personal projects because I’m my own client and the deadline is totally up to me. 😂 I do think it’s essential for an artist’s creative growth though.
A few months ago, I worked on a personal piece titled “Unbroken Vase”. I used cracked eggshells to create this to express how our brokenness can still be made whole, and that there is beauty in imperfection. The flower motif and eggshells as a material symbolise growth. I was going to sell this piece initially but the more I worked on it, the more meaningful it was to me, and more emotions were poured into it. It felt like a collaboration of my many reflections on life over the past 4 months.
The New York Times Hong Kong team held their magazine launch at Peninsula Hotel Hong Kong, and I was grateful to be able to present and talk about the piece at the event. More info coming up soon on where it will be displayed at!
