我現在33歲,So What? 終於懂,「當下的自己」才是人生時間軸上最重要的!
對了,有人好奇這次「{}」的意思嗎?簡單說是「大括號」,在數學運算式中稱作「空集合」。數學不好的人就想像一個清空的行李箱吧。「空」不是無,而是無限可能。括號還有另外一個更好懂的意思,就是「優先處理」。將過去整理過後的自己,回歸純粹,態度成熟自信!(失戀後重新出發的人應該很有感觸吧!🤣)
Your best self is not in the future, but in the Now.
Looking back, I seem to have been playing a role in almost every relationship I was ever in. I'm not just talking about romantic relationships. Whether it was with friends or colleagues (especially seniors), I would modify myself almost instinctively. Should my voice be sweeter? My jokes dirtier? If you wanted to know who I was eating with that day, all you had to do was look at the clothes I was wearing.
The changes were subtle, but they still reflected a truth: I didn’t feel like the real me was enough so I was worried that other people would also find her lacking. I told myself that if I just kept working at it, I would someday become a version of Lara that everyone accepted.
Eventually I only knew how to get my cues from the external world. I would always base my next step on feedback I got from others. Most people considered me easy to get along with, but I grew more and more unhappy.
I think I had it all wrong. My first priority should have been listening to my inner voice. Whether or not other people agree with it is not in my control nor of my concern. Take looking for a partner. Even if I found the person of my dreams, it would never last if I couldn’t be myself around them.
I am 33 years old. So What? I finally understand that "the present self" is the most important thing on the timeline of life! It’s time to prioritize me!
By the way, is anyone curious about the meaning of "{}" this time? Besides the more commonly known representation of parentheses as prioritization, these curly brackets are called “the empty set”. The empty what? If like me, math is not your strongest suit, think of it as an empty suitcase. "Empty" doesn’t mean nothing, but infinite possibilities! What will you fill your life with this time?

A very interesting text about how we teach reading to kids!

.graphic cues (what do the letters tell you about what the word might be?)
.syntactic cues (what kind of word could it be, for example, a noun or a verb?)
.semantic cues (what word would make sense here, based on the context?)
另一套觀點則強調要 explicitly, systematically 教授 letter 同 sound 的關係,怎樣 decode words,即是在孩子初學習英語時,集中把 phonics 的系統循序漸進式地好好掌握。
香港的學校多是採用 whole language approach,而家長努力付費外補的多是 phonics。
文中詳細描述了能夠掌握有效 phonics 策略的學生是如何閱讀:
//Here's what happens when a reader who has good phonics skills comes to a word she doesn't recognize in print. She stops at the word and sounds it out. If it's a word she knows the meaning of, she has now linked the spelling of the word with its pronunciation. If she doesn't know the meaning of the word, she can use context to try to figure it out.
By about second grade, a typically developing reader needs just a few exposures to a word through understanding both the pronunciation and the spelling for that word to be stored in her memory. She doesn't know that word because she memorized it as a visual image. She knows that word because at some point she successfully sounded it out.
The more words she stores in her memory this way, the more she can focus on the meaning of what she's reading; she'll eventually be using less brain power to identify words and will be able to devote more brain power to comprehending what she's reading.//
近年很多學者從科學研究的角度證實 systematic phonics approach 對提升孩子閱讀能力更有幫助。

【「語言學」、「語言學習」雙角度分析】 BBC 記者的 have sb to thank for 有在諷刺嗎?真的要謝謝維尼嗎?
因為 BBC 記者在蔡英文總統勝選的國際記者會上所問 "Do you have the Chinese President Xi Jinping to thank for this victory?
以 have sb to thank for 為例, Macmillan dictionary 就提供給我們 2 個定義:
(1) used in a positive way to say who is responsible for something good
表面上我們看到 thank 就會想到是謝謝,所以第一層字面上含義就可以理解成歸功於、感謝~的意思。
(2) used in a negative way to say who you blame for something bad
但字典裡也提供了另外一層比較負面、歸咎的字義了。但因為表面上「字字都看不出有負面、要拼湊起來才有負面」,可以看到這個片語有他的 connotative meaning.
⚑ 英文裡有些看似簡單的用法,其實都有其複雜性:
1️⃣ Tell me about it. 如果一路語調往下降,其實是在應和人家某見不滿的事情。
2️⃣ That's interesting. 依語調不同,可以是真的表達覺得有趣、也可以是個社交辭令 (實際覺得
滿口胡言、或覺得不盡正確)。
3️⃣ Thank you. 若聽到美國人講的是 Thank U. 把重音放在 U 上,很多時候是在反諷 (but not always)。
4️⃣ You're such a good friend. (一般中文我們講反話,是否這句話也會有兩層意思呢?)
✔︎ 英文該怎麼學勒?
教育部公布的最新課綱,認定高中生要學會 5000 字左右的英文字彙 (有往下調)。但我們仔細想想,have sb to thank for 這每一個字,是否都在 1000 字以內?是的。但我們學了 thank 後就會這個片語的意思嗎?答案是否定的。同樣的大家看看下面幾個用法:
(a) have one's hands full
(b) have a lot on one's plate
(c) out of the blue
(d) work out on and off
下面沒有一個用法的單字難度範圍落在 500 字以外。但是為何「字字看得懂,句句看不懂呢?」
這告訴我們學習英文的時候,要特別注意這些生活常見、口語的片語用法。為了檢定、考試,學完 fall, 學 drop, plummet 是一個方向。但是將已經會的字,做重新的排列組合去學習新的意義,更是另外一個重要但常常被忽略的學習方向。
