2004年に、それまでのカワサキの1000ccクラスのスーパースポーツモデルであったZX-9Rの後継として発表された。 一般市販車として初めてパワーウエイトレシオが1kg/psを切るよう車体とエンジンを組み合わせ（172kg/175ps、日本に多く輸入されたマレーシア仕様は排ガス規制や騒音規制で若干パワーダウンしている→164馬力）、ハードブレーキング時に対応するためにMotoGP参戦マシンZX-RR譲りのバックトルクリミッターも装備しており、1000ccスーパースポーツクラスにおける4大メーカー最後発の車両にふさわしい脅威のモデルとして注目を浴び、主要各国参加の雑誌･ジャーナリスト参加のトライアルでは、高評価及び好成績を収めている、しかし細部の調整が煮詰まっていないことが指摘されており、乗りこなすにはライダーの技量が必要なモデルとして評価されることが多かったのも事実である。 2004年FMCされたYZF-R1や同年にデビューしたCBR1000RRはいずれもセンターアップマフラーを採用したのに対し、ZX-10Rはオーソドックスなタイプのマフラーであった。これは軽量化のためだったと言われている
