赫爾辛基設計周，是北歐地區最大的設計周活動。芬蘭人和設計非常親近，設計已經成為大家日常生活中熟悉的部份，所以設計的視角非常廣闊，貫穿於社會，經濟和文化進步的所有過程當中。雖然每年的設計週沒有特別設定主題，但對於環保、材質、節能、兒童教育等等的題材高識別度，已經很鮮明地反映了歐洲人對於環境、社會與文化的關懷。

赫爾辛基設計區 (design district) 在市中心，是創意的聚集地。一平方公里的範圍內，聚集了設計商店、藝廊、工作室、特色酒吧餐館、設計旅店。在設計週的期間內還有還有Design Market、Open House Helsinki、Pechakucha 講演之夜等活動。臺北當年在申請設計之都前，有提過的十一個臺北的創意街區，例如我們熟知的康青龍街區、溫羅汀街區，即是從赫爾辛基設計區的經驗學來。

走久了會發現，不管是政府公部門要重新包裝一個街區或設計議題，或像是赫爾辛基以公司型態推動內容與地域的串連，抑或是台灣過去幾年曾經以協會形式推動設計師週的集市盛會，設計內容的質與量一直都是最關鍵的成敗，而不只是表面的形式與行銷論述手法。

內容的質量不是一天兩天，所以設計教育一直是在幾年來的設計活動中，芬蘭放相當高比重的項目，各個展區、活動中都能見得兒童參與的形式，潛移默化中設計成為一種生活方式、是每天的呼吸，而不是誠品書店裡的某一區架子。設計的範疇不應只是懂得判別美跟醜（這應該是藝術）、也不只是懂得生活（這應該是文化），但又不全然是一種思維（用Design thinking解釋又狹隘了些），這或許與手作精神與培養解決問題能力的傳統有關。
