🧐 Hong Kong’s experience with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 was a dress rehearsal for the coronavirus. The virus first appeared in China, which tried to cover it up and then had to resort to drastic quarantines to quash it.
香港於2003年經歷了SARS疫情，該疫情可謂新冠肺炎的預演。SARS病毒最早出現在中國，起初官方沒有及時披露疫情，隨後不得不採取嚴厲的隔離措施來阻止其蔓延。
- Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) 嚴重急性呼吸道症候群

- resort to （在別無辦法的情況下）訴諸、依靠、採用⋯

✏️ Initially, the government played down the outbreak. By late March it broke out in an apartment complex and as news spread, social distancing arose almost spontaneously.
政府起初淡化了疫情的嚴重性， 到了3月底，香港一幢公寓大樓爆發疫情，經媒體報導之後，香港市民幾乎自發地採取了社交隔離措施。
- play sth. down 對…作低調處理；淡化…的重要性（或糟糕程度）
- break out 爆發、突然發生
- complex （n.）綜合大樓、建築群
- spontaneously 自發地
📑 “Fears of the SARS virus took root in the whole city,” Alan Siu and Y.C. Richard Wong, economists at the University of Hong Kong, wrote in a 2004 article. “Face masks were selling briskly and could be seen everywhere. Public places were disinfected several times a day. People washed their hands much more frequently and avoided going out to crowded places. Restaurants, shops, cinemas, and other entertainment venues were deserted.”
香港大學經濟學家蕭如彬（Alan Siu）和王於漸（Y.C.Richard Wong）在2004年一篇文章寫道：「對於SARS病毒的恐懼感開始在整個香港蔓延，口罩迅速售罄，到處都可看到戴口罩的市民。公共場所每天消毒數次，人們更頻繁地洗手，儘量不去擁擠的地方；餐廳、商店、電影院和其他娛樂場所無人光顧。」
- take root 深入人心；被牢固樹立
- briskly 迅速地/輕快地
✍️形容詞的brisk有輕快/生氣勃勃的意思，例如：a brisk walk（輕快的步伐）
- disinfect 爲…除菌、替…消毒
- deserted 空無一人的
✍️desert是沙漠，而deserted就是像沙漠一般空蕩蕩、空無一人的樣子

🇸🇪While social life in Europe and U.S. now centers on the home after governments imposed increasingly drastic curbs on freedom of movement, Sweden left offices and stores open, issued recommendations rather than restrictions, and waited to see what happens.
各國政府對人民施加的行動限制越來越大，如今歐美的社交生活只能以自家為主。瑞典的公司和商家卻仍開放，政府僅發布了相關建議而非限制令，並同時靜觀其變

🧠Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s chief epidemiologist and architect of the policy, says the approach is to let the virus spread as slow as possible while sheltering the elderly and the vulnerable until much of the population becomes naturally immune or a vaccine becomes available.
瑞典首席流行病學家和政策制定者特格內爾（Anders Tegnell）說，該方法是讓病毒的傳播盡可能放慢，保護老年人和易感染群體，直到大部分人自然免疫或等到有疫苗可用
-epidemiologist 流行病學家，epidemic是流行病，「epi-」是「之上」(upon, over)的意思，「-demic」是指「人」，而流行病就是在人群中發生的。「pan」則是指全部、所有，因此大流行就是pandemic
-architect 除了建築師，也是設計師、創立者的意思
-shelter 避難所，作為動詞有遮蔽、保護之意
👵Sweden has a long tradition of favoring voluntary guidelines—which call on the elderly to self-isolate and the young to reduce social mobility—over coercive measures. Dr. Tegnell said that could lead to higher compliance.
瑞典長久以來傾向於讓人民自主遵守規則，建議老年人採取自我隔離措施，年輕人減少社交活動，而非採取強制措施。特格內爾博士認為這樣會有更多人願意遵守
-voluntary 自願的，voluntary worker就是義工
-coercive 強制的，coercive measures強制手段
-compliance 服從、遵守

應該指，採取強烈且根本的手段/措施來解決問題

我猜這裡的profession指的是，律師、醫師、會計師等專業人士，或某個
職業，需看你的前後文。
另外查了一下，clean sth up，意指將犯罪的、有害的影響從某件事/東西清除掉。
我有找一個句子：
The Financial Planning Association (FPA) has signalled it will continue with
its push to clean up the profession and raise the standard of advice provided
by financial planners.
我想應該是整頓某個職業類別，比如說如何提高醫師的職業道德，如何加強律師的保密
義務等等。
白話一點，類似武俠小說，清理門戶的意思。
