Growing up in a multiracial country, celebrating the festivities of my friends of different religions and ethnicities have become second nature.
I look forward to the colourful lights during Deepavali and the amazing jam tarts during Chinese New Year. For Muslim celebrations I will invite my friends of different religions and races over for Hari Raya and for buka puasa feasts during Ramadan which they will accept without hesitation!.
From a young age I was exposed to the multiplicity of the world around me.
One of my earliest introductions was in kindergarten where I was taught about Nabi Isa S.A or Jesus and his story.
My journey in understanding tolerance continued when I entered the Royal Military College, Malaysia’s multi-racial boarding (Military) school.
I was placed in an environment where I had to learn how to coexist with my other comrades of different backgrounds.
Wishing and celebrating these festivities does not impact my faith.
Many religious scholars even support the notion of Muslims sharing the joy of these festivities with their non-muslim brothers and sisters as this fosters solidarity and a sense of community.
With Christmas around the corner I hope that you are able to reflect on their year and be proud of all your achievements and the challenges you’ve overcome and spend time with your loved ones.
