You know my thoughts but maybe I’m biased 🐣🤗.
I generally don’t recommend cockatoos, or most parrots, as pets because they need a LOT of attention and require certain care, such as the appropriate diet, that many bird owners don’t even know to provide.
#SoapBox time - many of the commercially available bird feeds are WAY too high in fats (aka too many seeds & nuts) for most parrots dietary needs. FYI most parrots should only get ~10% of their intake as fats! Not the 50-80%+ we see in many pet stores’ food options.
If you really do want a parrot I’d highly suggest looking into the underrated cockatiel (very different from cockatoo) bc cockatiels are very social, friendly, and can form very tight human:animal bonds with their owners! Do me 2 favors if you’re serious about a bird pet (or any exotic animal):
1. DO YOUR RESEARCH! Know what you’re getting into and be prepared to take care of these pets correctly! 8/10 exotics appointments I have at the vet hospital come from owners not doing their homework..
2. Look into a bird rescue near you! Lots of exotic birds & pets in need of a home too 😉.
