Being a Dad enriches me, and makes me learn something new every day… even lessons from my own monkies. I'm genuinely grateful to have been blessed with three wondrous kids. It is a controlled chaotic joy and we make the most (and best) out of it.

In fact, one of my proudest parenting moments came courtesy of the 2 boys some years back:

I asked the boys on 2 separate occasions, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Ash: A father.
Ayd: I want to be just like you, a father!

I totally never expected them to echo the same answer! I would like to think all my effort in spending time with them had rubbed off in a positive way.

And I really felt the love from my 3 monkies last year when I had to undergo a slipped disc surgery. Prior to the surgery, I was in constant pain and could only lie on my belly the entire time (jialat, I know) and the monkies took turns to attend to me and make sure I was well looked after. Guess at least something good came out of it!

In moments like this, we sometimes ask ourselves what have we done for them to turn out to be such darlings. To be honest with you, there is absolutely NOTHING out of the ordinary about the things we do. We are no different from any other parents.

So my advice to new parents is this: Put everything into practice. Feed more meals. Bathe them more. Change more diapers. Play with them more. Listen more. Simply spend more time with them. And there is always something to do with your family over the weekends, search #funforfreesg today.

Some say your priorities in life change when you have a child to raise. For me, becoming a parent also changes the way that I manage my finances. Because let’s face it, the cost of milk formula, diapers, and even childcare can add up very quickly if you are not keeping a close watch. But from my experience of having 3 kids, I must say that it is not impossible to manage how much we spend with careful planning as there are many affordable options out there. Budgeting for the family is never easy but it is important because it helps to separate the needs from the wants.

Expecting parents can consider the newly launched IKEA StarterKid bundle which has nine essential items - a cot, cot mattress, cot bedsheets, bibs, washcloths, changing mat, changing mat cover, bathtub and a baby towel - and only costs $149.

One of the common gripes I hear from parents of young children are about the cost of having kids is that it is expensive to bring the kids out for a day of fun. Granted that admission fees to the zoo, theme parks and indoor playgrounds are not cheap (especially for a family of 5!), there are tons of free activities for families in Singapore too. At the end of the day, spending quality time with our kids is important… much more important than spending money on them. One is never fully financially or emotionally ready for children, and we were no exception. But 3 kids on, I can honestly say my monkies bring me joy that I never knew existed and my home will never be complete without them.
