Was so honoured to interview Gad Weil the other day! Known as the Wheat Man in France, he transforms cities with ephemereal installations that make us think about our relationship with nature and with fellow human beings.

I read an interview where he had gotten upset with someone who just grabbed a whole lot of wheat and walked off. When confronted by Gad, the man said “It’s just wheat.” So, I asked him, did he feel the need to protect the work? And he said... No. That that was the point of his work, for people to be able to interact with it. And he wouldn’t mind if, say, a husband were to pick a stalk and give to his wife, or if a mother were to pick a stalk for her child; a gift.

Similar acts, but vastly different attitudes.

And it made me think about our Mother Earth. We live off her. She is meant to be appreciated and shared. But we also have to respect her, look out for her and remember that there are people coming after who want to see her, too.

Chanel and Gad’s paths crossed because wheat was Chanel’s lucky charm. Her apartment at rue Cambon, her suite at the Ritz, her home in La Pausa, all of them had wheat in many forms. With a great deal of expertise, they have brought wheat to life with Le Blés de Chanel, brilliant and with all the movement and fluidity that was so important to Chanel when she first started designing high jewellery.
