两位影响南美洲历史发展的传奇男人!
That time Malcolm X met Fidel Castro in Harlem 60 years ago on this day.
A year after the Cuban Revolution, Castro and his delegation came to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, but the management of the Manhattan hotel the delegation booked now refused to house them after the US government already pressured other hotels to reject the Cubans. Upon learning of their situation, Malcolm X invited them to come uptown to Harlem, to stay at the Black-owned Hotel Theresa, where Malcolm X said he would be greeted with open arms.
"We had two choices: one was the patio in the United Nations; when I told this to the Secretary-General he was horrified at the thought of a delegation camping in tents there; and then we received Malcolm X’s offer, he had talked to one of our comrades, and I said: “That is the place, Hotel Theresa." And there we went,” said Castro.
People from Harlem received the 34-year-old Cuban revolutionary leader by the thousands, with masses huddling round-the-clock in front of the hotel. Castro was to them that bearded revolutionary who had told white America to go to hell and his stay there was an important acknowledgement of the struggle African Americans shared with the rest of the Third World in resisting racism, colonialism and imperialism.
When the 35-year-old Malcolm X received Castro they talked about the incredible inhospitality the Cuban party had experienced at the Shelburne, the insulting demand made upon them for a $10,000 deposit against damage to be expected from Cuban "barbarians" after a racist slander campaign in the press that included baseless charges of plucking live chickens at the hotel.
But above all, Fidel spoke of Harlem. "I always wanted to come to Harlem," said Castro, "but I was not sure of what kind of welcome I would get. When I got the news that I would be welcome in Harlem, I was happy." The Black people of the United States were not as brainwashed by the government's anti-Cuban propaganda as whites, he continued. Revolutionary Cuba, a majority Black nation, was wiping out racial discrimination. Cubans, Africans and the Black people of the United States were all in the same boat. "I feel as if I were in Cuba now. I feel very warm here." Malcolm X responded that it was indeed true that, "We in Harlem are not addicted to all the propaganda the U.S. government puts out." And then they embraced.
"As long as Uncle Sam is against you, you know you're a good man," Malcolm X told Castro.

Hello NYC! I’m back! I landed at 6am after 18 hours in the air (great flight as usual, Singapore Airlines). The sun was rising and casting an orange-red hue over the New York City skyline as I made my way to my hotel in the Meatpacking District.
I spent most of the flight sleeping, which was the most sleep I’ve had all week. I got out of Newark airport fairly quickly, partly because they were using new immigration machines and partly because I have no luggage, just my TOM BIHN Synik 22 and Co-Pilot. Carryon-only travel is the best.
(Side note: Enjoy your holiday, David and Stephanie! It was nice meeting you two!)
My first order of business after checking in was to get some breakfast. I did have some Chye Tow Kway onboard but that in-flight breakfast was 4am.
By the time I settled into my room, it was 8.30am and I was famished. I polished off the smoked salmon, cream cheese with bagel, and pork apple sausage (what is an apple sausage ah? American hotels always serve this).
The weather looks lovely this week. I think I’m going to enjoy my stay here in the Big Apple.
My room, I am told, is just below a famous disco. Good thing I’m a heavy sleeper then. The view from my bed is lovely. I can see the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline from my bed. I better go out and walk-walk on this sunny Saturday, or I’ll get too comfy in this bed and koon.

"Korea Way" on 32nd Street in Manhattan's Koreatown
Korea Way
The heart of Koreatown is the segment of 32nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, officially nicknamed "Korea Way". Though only one city block long, Korea Way features stores on multiple stories, with small, independently run establishments reaching up to the third or fourth floors, including restaurants, exuding an ambience of Seoul itself. The New York City Korean Chamber of Commerce estimates there to be more than 100 small businesses on Korea Way.
The street features numerous restaurants that serve both traditional and/or regional Korean cuisine and Korean fusion fare (including Korean Chinese cuisine), several bakeries, grocery stores, supermarkets, bookstores, consumer electronics outlets, video rental shops, tchotchke and stationery shops, hair and nail salons, noraebang bars, nightclubs, as well as cell phone service providers, internet cafés, doctors' offices, banks, and hotels. Approximately twelve 24/7 restaurants conduct business on Korea Way.
