Using a real-life story of how a Chinese mother got humiliated by a foreigner, Master Dai Hu emphasized the importance of speaking Mandarin frequently, and learning Chinese Metaphysics to the participants of Chinese descent. The beautiful language and the Metaphysics knowledge are the roots to our Chinese culture. A race that neglects and abandons its roots will not get any respect from others and eventually die out.
Just before leaving, Master Dai Hu performed a round of blessings for everybody's personal objects. Upon request, he also did a simple demonstration on how to use the chanting beads, ending the night on an auspicious note
Thank you to all participants who made an effort to dress up and Mr & Mrs Gordonn Chiu for their beautiful flower bouquets, as a birthday gift to Master Dai Hu.

"Let's tell a story.
I'm working my 24 hr (work 24 hours, off 48 hours) duty. It's 1100 and I just finished morning lecture (equipment drill and familiarisation) in the engine bay of my fire station. It's a Saturday so our rota (platoon-ish) orders nasi lemak. Coding comes in over the loudspeaker and we turn out to a case of locked door, suspected DOA (decomposing body). Traffic doesn't give way to our LF (red rhino), as per usual (smh). We arrive at the HDB unit and instantly we smell the dead body. The knowledge of smell will come with experience. The niece, who called 995, asks me if her uncle will be ok. I already know the body is decomposing but I reply "We're unsure, but we'll try our best". I lie to her face. My pump operator (PO, and the only regular in the crew) looks at me and grimaces. We've been in this situation together many times before. We easily break the door and the smell intensifies. I go in first, followed by the ambulance (alpha) paramedic. We find the body on the bed in the master bedroom. The paramedic tells me, "About two weeks". The body is severely bloated, skin green and black. The face is unrecognizable as it has bloated too much. Bile attempts to escape from between the discolored lips creating bubbles. The smell is sweet but rotten and my fireman gags. I get the relevant information I need and step out for a breather. The niece looks at me and asks what is going on. I look at her and I know she knows he's dead. "You uncle... has passed away". I turn away to avoid the emotions. Emotions are killers in this line of work.
We get back in time for nasi lemak lunch. The chicken is a bit soggy this week. The smell of rotten flesh lingers in my nostrils. I watch the Malay romantic drama that my enciks chose on the TV. It's ok, the girl is cute.
Before dinner we get another call - unit fire confirm case. We race there and reach before the fire engine (pumper). They're caught in traffic and will take another few minutes. Two firefighters and I proceed to the unit. Instantly the thick black smoke chokes my throat and waters my eyes. I struggle with my breathing cylinder because the air hose delivery tool is stuck between my backplate and my back. I say fuck it, neighbours are already screaming for us to hurry. The pressure escalates but I close myself off from the members of public, just like normal. We all focus. The only things I listen to are my matra (radio) and my fireman. I just wear my facemask for minimal protection and crawl in. The fire is well alight on the stove and I shoot at it. The smoke limits my visibility to 0, I now can't see my fingers as I stretch out my arm. I crawl back out and get stuck on a fallen wire. I panic as I think of my family. Emotions are dangerous. A fire biker crawls in and frees me. We step out and I tell the crew the fire is almost finished but our CAF backpacks are finished (water foam sprayers). I send the firefighters down to set up water supply from hydrant and crawl back in with the firebiker. The smoke makes it feel like someone just threw hot ash down my throat. We extinguish the fire using an ass-washing hose from the kitchen toilet. I am coughing badly but he sprays my face with the hose. The kitchen is badly burnt. I can feel the smoke damage in my lungs. The owner and neighbours pat me on the back and thank me for saving their home as I walk out. I smile but I know I took another step closer to death.
We get back at 2200 and order McDonalds. It is the best Double McSpicy I’ve eaten in a while.
At lunch the next day my friend (SAF LTA) tells me how stressful being an instructor at SAFTI has been recently. I remember as my cylinder got trapped on the fallen wire, and how I thought of my family in those few struggling seconds. I nod my head and grunt. " SAF has it tough with JCC and everything huh?" I joke. He agrees enthusiastically.
All in a day’s work for the NSFs in SPF/SCDF. If we fail, someone dies from our direct actions. Welcome to NS. No second chances or semula. Just death. I wish the public knew the risks that some NSFs take each day. We might not be as fit as NDU or as garang as commandos, but we put our lives on the line literally every day.
As an NSF I can say I have saved many lives, fought many fires and contributed to Singapore. No play acting or training for a war that will never happen (though I understand the incredible need for an armed military). I love my job, I love NS and wouldn't trade it for anything else (maybe an EMT vocation).
I am still amazed that many members of public still associate NS with army. I wish people would know. There's no greater feeling in this world than knowing some uncle I helped rescue on my first duty at 0200 will live to eat his favourite mee pok or talk cock with his kakis because of my direct actions. Pride and care right?
At least I get paid $1400 a month (;
UPDATE: Thanks for overwhelming suppourt. If I knew how big this would get I would have proofread my writing more 😒 (some might say it spread like fire in dry grass during lalang season). I would tell more stories but I know that it would compromise my anonymity so I'll just shut my mouth, and unfortunately since this is a throw away you guys probably won't be hearing from me again.
What were my goals for this post?
To bring awareness to the nature and extent of NSF work in SCDF.
To just get some words off my chest.
This post was NOT meant to:
Bash SAF. I know the importance of a trained military (I believe I addressed this point in my initial post). If we didn't have the National Service Scheme, invading Singapore as Indonesia or Malaysia would be easy af.
Over-dramatise our work. I tried my hardest to write from a neutral stand point and deliver facts about incidents as cold, hard, and true as the Ben&Jerrys ice cream in my freezer however what we do on a daily sometimes makes me ask "Am I in a Michael Bay film?". It happens to the best of us.
If you were offended, I apologise. My intentions were merely to raise awareness for the often overlooked and under-praised "little brother" NSFs in SCDF/SPF. So many of our kind deserve recognition for what they deal with.
One last short bit before signing off.
EMTs (medical assistants in ambulances) have some of the roughest calls out there, no contest. I was having dinner with my buddy from BRT who later became an EMT at a high volume station when he dropped Fat Man 2.0 on me. Traditionally he and I have always been tuned to similar wavelengths as the chaos-utopia nature of our jobs is only shared between a select few.
He's an NSF like me -- 18-22, male, horny. As per the norm we were sharing gossip about events or big incidents in the Force, latest happenings and where that one cute paramedic at 33 is now. We were just digging in to our chow when he told me "I had a casualty die in my hands for the first time".
According to him it's not common for that to happen. I nod my head as I spool my pasta. It's has a thick green sauce and I can't help but think of my last DOA. I throw the idea out of my mind. Work is work, recreation is recreation. Usually when EMS arrives the casualty has a high chance of surviving, albeit sometimes with long lasting or even permanent injuries, or the casualty is dead. "Case of fall from height. The skull was completely smashed," he told me between mouthfuls of food, "I had the guy in a head grip but the harder I held his skull, the more my fingers just... pressed into his brain. There was no structural integrity left in the skull." We continued eating, he had told me of a similar case before. It wasn't new news to either of us. The pasta burns my tongue and I sip on my lemon tea. Too sweet. "Then he just stopped breathing. CPR AED didn't work." It was the first time witnessing the transition from alive to dead. They couldn't resuscitate. We paid the bill and started chitchatting about soccer on the way to the MRT. It was one of eight calls on his 8 hour duty. The food place was way too expensive and I made a mental note to never go back (unless I'm with my parents). Who charges $5 for ice lemon tea? Christ.
There are many duties where I don't get a call the whole 24 hours. If it's a busy day we'll get 3-4. 3-4 for him is a light day. Alpha (ambulance) guys really get it the hardest.
If you know someone who has a similar job, just listen to what they have to say. It's not easy for everyone to transition from seeing a broken family outside a unit containing a dead body to eating breakfast with their fam at their favourite prata house while being all happy smiley. We all get desensitised to death and risking everything but desensitisation doesn't mean it doesn't take a mental toll on our minds and well-being. We don't admit it because it's not garang, but everyone needs to get their thoughts off their chest every once in a while. You can help them by lending a ear (or a hug)."

Rasheed Wallace could not miss for three quarters and his teammates could not miss in the fourth.
Wallace scored 30 points and the Portland Trail Blazers scored on their first 10 possessions of the final period, snapping a season-high six-game losing streak with a 96-88 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Wallace made 13-of-20 shots, including 4-of-4 3-pointers. The two-time All-Star flashed his inside-outside game and helped the Trail Blazers open an 11-point lead early in the third quarter.
"It was just a good game, everybody out there playing hard," a terse Wallace said. "That's all. Nothing new."
"Rasheed is an All-Star and what he did tonight was no surprise," 76ers guard Eric Snow said. "You've just got to try to limit his shots."
The 76ers fought back within 71-70 early in the final period before Wallace made a 3-pointer to start a 19-5 surge. Working against the stingiest defense in the NBA, the Blazers simply were unstoppable.
Wallace sat for most of the decisive surge but it did not seem to matter. Damon Stoudamire made two straight jumpers and a layup, Shawn Kemp drilled two long jumpers and Derek Anderson made a pair before two free throws by Ruben Patterson gave the Blazers a 90-75 lead with 5:49 remaining.
Stoudamire scored 19 points and Kemp had 10 for Portland, which shot 51 percent (42-of-82) and looked nothing like the team that was mired in its longest losing streak in over six years.
"It depends on how many minutes are available," said Kemp, who has come off the bench and struggled most of the season. "It's up to me to make the most of it."
Stoudamire also had 11 assists as the Blazers did a terrific job of sharing the ball. They had 33 assists and repeatedly passed ahead of Philadelphia's defensive rotations.
"We finally put a win together," Stoudamire said. "We have to play like that every game."
"That's the way we're going to win games," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "It was probably the most heady game we played all year. We made the right decisions. We seemed to play smart. We played under control."
It was a sweet win for Cheeks, who was a player and assistant coach in Philadelphia for nearly 20 years.
"That wasn't easy," Cheeks said. "I was having fun with them. They were having fun with me."
"It was tough," said Sixers coach Larry Brown, who had Cheeks as an assistant for four years. "I thought if we won it wouldn't be something I'd enjoy."
Derrick Coleman scored 21 points and Allen Iverson added 18 for the 76ers, who completed a marathon seven-game, 12-day road trip at 3-4. The Sixers fell to 8-13 on the road but do not travel further west than Milwaukee for the rest of the season.
"We learned a lot about each other as a team and accomplished something as a team, not as individuals," Iverson said. "It's been tough playing on the road, so it will be good playing in our own gym."
Philadelphia has lost nine of its last 11 games in Portland.
The Sixers scored the first 10 points of the game, but Wallace scored 14 points in the opening period as the Blazers stormed back to take a 27-24 lead.
A jumper by Coleman gave Philadelphia a 42-41 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half before Wallace made two jumpers in a 9-1 burst gave Portland a 50-43 lead. Consecutive jumpers by Stoudamire opened the third quarter.
Iverson's jumper cut the deficit to 67-65 late in the period. A 3-pointer by Aaron McKie opened the final quarter and made it 69-68.
Scottie Pippen had nine points and nine assists and Patterson and Dale Davis scored eight points each for the Blazers, who held a 46-30 rebounding edge.
McKie scored 17 points and Snow added 15 and seven assists for the Sixers, who shot 41.5 percent (34-of-82).

It was another thumbs down for Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers.
Iverson was slowed by a zone defense before sitting the final 1 1/2 minutes with a sprained left thumb as the reeling 76ers absorbed their fifth loss in six games, a 93-87 setback to the Golden State Warriors.
Against a man-to-man defense in the first quarter, Iverson had 13 points. But he scored just 10 thereafter as the Warriors switched to a 1-2-2 zone at times and turned the NBA's leading scorer into a passer.
"Tonight we let a zone frustrate us and to be professionals and let a zone frustrate us is a bad thing," Iverson said. "We are supposed to learn how to handle zones; you learn about those in college."
"I didn't have us prepared for their zone very well," 76ers coach Larry Brown admitted. "We were very tentative against it and they made the plays."
With Iverson limited as a threat, Golden State rallied in the fourth quarter. A layup by Antawn Jamison off a block by Erick Dampier and a steal by Larry Hughes gave the Warriors an 87-83 lead with 1:33 to go.
"They couldn't get an open look from the perimeter," Hughes said. "They were flashing it in the paint and our big guys were handling it. We got a couple of defelctions, a couple of blocks and a couple of missed shots. It led to us getting pretty good looks at the other end."
The Sixers called timeout and Iverson was not on the floor when they returned. Aaron McKie made a jumper and steal, but former Warrior Vonteego Cummings was called for a charge and Dampier sealed it with two free throws with 38 seconds left.
"I need to get an X-ray but it's real banged up right now," said Iverson, who was 9-of-18 and had seven assists but took just four shots in the second half.
Hughes scored 22 points against his former team as Golden State snapped a four-game losing streak and defeated Philadelphia for the first time in seven meetings since January 15, 1997.
"I thought Larry was real solid," Warriors coach Dave Cowens said. "I think he took the challenge. He was guarding one of the best players in the league (Iverson). He matched him stroke for stroke and took care of the basketball and ran our club. He had a remarkable game tonight and I'm very happy for him."
Matt Harpring scored a season-high 25 points and Derrick Coleman added 14 for the Sixers, who dropped to 0-2 on their five-game road trip and 4-6 on the road. En route to the NBA Finals last season, their sixth road loss came on February 4.
"They came out in the fourth quarter and stopped us with their zone," said Harpring, who did not score in the final period. "We weren't hitting our outside shots and we got confused a little bit."
A 3-pointer by Chris Mills gave Golden State the lead for good at 71-70 with 10:49 to play. Hughes' driving layup extended the advantage to 80-75 with 5:53 remaining, but he missed two free throws between baskets by Coleman and Iverson that again made it a one-point game.
However, Iverson did not score again. Dampier and Danny Fortson scored around two free throws by Philadelphia's Dikembe Mutombo and Fortson fouled out Mutombo with 1:48 to play, making 1-of-2 from the line for an 85-83 edge.
Jamison scored 19 points, Dampier added 12 and six blocks and Fortson 11 and 15 rebounds for the Warriors, who overcame 39 percent shooting by making 27-of-36 free throws and holding a 49-33 edge on the glass.
"You have to play a good defensive game if win shooting 40 percent," Cowens said. "Part of that is we went to the line so often and it was just being aggressive, I believe."
"We needed Dampier's energy tonight," Fortson said. "That was a life-saver. We don't know what the score would have been tonight if Damp hadn't had blocked those shots."
Mutombo had 12 points and five blocks for the Sixers, who shot 49 percent (36-of-74) but committed 21 turnovers and made just 12-of-17 free throws. Guard Aaron McKie returned from missing two games with an irregular heartbeat and had seven points and 11 assists.
Philadelphia's team bus was in an accident en route to the game and arrived just 45 minutes before tip-off. Both Iverson and Harpring appeared unaffected as they combined for 21 points in the first quarter.

After getting beaten physically and on the scoreboard in Orlando in Game 2, the Philadelphia 76ers talked about sending a message to the Magic that they did not intend to be intimidated by what they considered Gestapo tactics.
Message delivered.
The Sixers played their own brand of "basketbrawl" Thursday night, roughing up the Magic physically early, then abusing them on the scoreboard the rest of the night en route to a rousing 97-85 victory in Game 3 of the best-of-5, first-round NBA playoff series.
Philly, up 2-1, can capture the series with a victory Saturday at home (12:30 p.m., NBC-TV).
The sellout crowd of 20,874 at the First Union Center was pumped even before the game --the first NBA playoff game held in Philly since May 12, 1991 -- began. The fans got louder during the pyrotechnics-infused introductions, were in a frenzy when the large replay screens showed a cartoon of Rocky punching Mickey Mouse (which read, "Yo, Orlando, Get set for a real Rocky welcome") backed by the "Rocky" soundtrack, and they were downright deafening early in the contest as their Sixers quickly showed that nobody, but nobody, could come into their house and push them around.
Sixer Matt Geiger got into a couple of glaring, shouting and shoving matches with Magic players early and the Philly defense forced five turnovers and held Orlando to 1-for-5 shooting from the field while jumping out to an 11-2 lead.
That set the tone for the entire night.
Orlando set floor records for turnovers in the first quarter (11) and in a half (20) and finished with 26.
The Sixers led by as many as 23 points before running out of steam late, allowing Orlando to close to within 11.
"It was them. We were kinda in a tidal wave and got swept out to sea," said Orlando Head Coach Chuck Daly. "They're much quicker and we don't have quite the ballhandling we need. It wasn't pleasant."
Riding the wave on both ends of the floor was Sixer guard Allen Iverson.
The league's scoring leader shrugged off a 13-point, 4-for-15 shooting effort in Game 2 and surfed his way to 33 points (an NBA Playoff high this season) Thursday night on 14-for-28 shooting from the field. Several of his buckets came via highlight-material plays.
Just as importantly, Iverson set a playoff record with 10 steals and helped derail the Orlando offense. The 10 thefts also set a tam record.
"I tried to set the tone on defense early in the game by pressing (Darrell) Armstrong up the court. The big guys did a good job trapping and I was able to pick up some loose balls," said Iverson, who also had five assists and five rebounds.
Daly agreed. "They came after us big time," he said. "We anticipated they'd do some sort of pressure. We just didn't react to it well.
"It's what happens at home when you're mad."
Sixer rookie Larry Hughes provided a huge spark off the bench on both ends of the floor. He finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
"He made some plays you just kinda marvel at, especially when you consider that he's 20 and his coach limits his opportunities to play," said proud Sixers Head Coach Larry Brown.
George Lynch (17 points, eight rebounds), Eric Snow (13 points, eight assists) and Tyrone Hill (11 points, nine boards) compensated for the lack of production out of Geiger and Theo Ratliff (four points, seven rebounds), who earlier in the day had been named second-team All-NBA defense.
For Orlando, Hardaway finished with 18 points. But most of those were meaningless. He had just two first-half points and was 0-for-2 from the field with four turnovers as his team went into intermission trailing 46-31.
Hardaway, who sparked the Magic in Game 2 with 22 meaningful points, did not make his first field-goal until the 7-minute mark of the third quarter.
He finished 6-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range, to go with five assists, three steals and five turnovers.
"I have to put the ball up like 20-25 times," said Hardaway. "Normally, I don't because we have other guys that can score. But they're not stepping up and scoring so I don't think we can win if I don't take more than two shots in a half."
Hardaway pointed to how the Sixers run their offense through Iverson and it has been successful.
"If we run some plays to get me more shots, maybe we could do the same," he said
Geiger wasn't a factor offensively (four points, one rebound) but played a big part in setting the tone. Early on, he did much of the trapping and didn't care if he bumped a few people along the way. His aggressive play got him into scraps with Armstrong and then Daly and the Orlando bench
"We tried to send a message to them that we were going to play just as physical as they did in Orlando and our big guys did a great job," said Iverson.
