我在美國上大學跟研究所的回憶，就是只要跟學術扯的上邊的課程，就超級，超級無聊。所以當我看到 Youtube 上這門學術寫作課程的時候，我根本不想看。

但這個學術寫作影片居然有兩百萬的點擊！

我們就一起來看看，到底是為什麼。

✍️ 1. 教授從一開頭就用 surprise opening

教授一開始的重點，就已經教我們把思考「反過來」：

Most schools teach writing to freshmen. Not us - we teach it to faculty. Because we've found that as students come into college and gain knowledge, they become WORSE writers.

Faculty members are the worst. So we target them.

他們發現，大一進來的學生其實很多寫作能力不差。反而是那些經過多年學術洗禮的教授們，寫出來的東西越來越爛。

所以他們要教的不是學生，而是教授。很多讓人記憶深刻的演講，都有這種「把思考模式倒過來」的點，從 Sir Ken Robinson 在 TED 的演講說學校是抹殺小孩創意的地方，到「被討厭的勇氣」。如果你的思考模式跟別人正好相反，這就變成非常好的演講開場。

我完全同意他的觀察。我經歷美國好幾個高等學府：兩所大學 (因為轉學)、研究所、然後在國際科學組織跟一對大牌教授共事六年，也發現：學術地位跟溝通能力，沒有特別大的正向關係。

✍️ 2. 你要放在心上的不是規則，而是讀者

他說很多學術寫作，都只關心規則 (rules)：看其他學者從以前到現在是怎麼寫的，有什麼明定的規則或是潛在的行規？

這些基礎的寫作元素當然重要! 但其實呢，進階寫作的人最需要放在心上的不是規則，而是讀者 (readers)。

除非你寫的是重複性很高的而且有跡可循的，如法律文件，不然光是遵守「規則」其實沒什麼用。他這裡用了一個厲害的溝通者的 favorite trick：介紹兩個對立的 ideas：rules vs. readers，而且兩個都是 r 開頭，形成一對。

為什麼要 focus 在讀者呢？

✍️ 3. 學術寫作的出發點，跟讀者的出發點常常不同！

很多學術界的人寫作的方式，是用寫作來「思考」：邊寫邊想。
可是，當他們的作品到了讀者面前，讀者肯定會用「自己的思考模式」來閱讀。

所以讀者才會時常看不懂。他用圖片中的「視覺」呈現 writer 跟 reader 看 text 的不同角度。

✍️ 4. 如果你的寫作沒有帶來價值，其他的都不重要！

他回憶有一次，一位研究生跑到他的辦公室，跟他大聲抱怨，說他寫的論文都邏輯清楚而且很有說服力，但外面的期刊都不願意刊登。

他告訴這位學生：**如果你寫的東西沒有給讀者帶來價值，**那多「清楚」或是「具說服力」，一點也不重要。

這位教授分享，為何這個點對於學術界的人來說，如此難理解：

In academic settings, people are PAID to read your stuff. But once you step outside into the world, this isn't true anymore. Readers out there will only read your stuff if they think it's valuable.

沒錯，大學是「付錢」給教授來看你的東西的！所以他們才會願意看，不然誰那麼無聊，花一整天看學生和其他教授寫的東西！？

在外面的世界，就沒有這麼好的事了：你的東西一定要提供價值。其實演講也是一樣。如果你的演講沒有帶來附加價值，就別說了。所以我們公司 Presentality 的中文才會叫做「核心觀點」：因為必須有一個有價值的核心觀點帶給聽眾。

老外在台的十誡 MV（中文rap)

首先，RIP Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls這位來自布魯克林的傳奇饒舌歌手，我為了紀念他而remix了這他寫的一首歌"10 Crack Commandments"。原曲是在講販毒的十誡，我則以更幽默的方式分享有關於在台灣當老外的經驗，教老外如何遵守台灣規矩，幫他們入境隨俗。

Biggie是在1996年被槍殺了，那次的殺人犯案子也尚未被破案，警察猜應該是幫派做的，嘻哈圈卻懷疑警察和FBI有可能是殺手，難道怎麼無法破案呢？！90年代的時候嘻哈的影響力越來越大，尤其是Biggie跟2PAC，到現在這兩位算是hiphop文化最偉大的饒舌歌手，假設他們還在，誰知道今天的社會會怎麼樣。

Biggie的風格雖然又硬派又直接，卻很幽默，文筆很風趣。像是這首歌10 Crack Commandments（販毒十誡），從歌名已經覺得有點好笑，怎麼會拿聖經的十誡拿來講販毒呢？但有些美國黑人的貧窮和困難真的是我們在台灣想不到的，但透過聽hiphop我們能更了解這些人的辛苦跟想法，連美國白人原本都不知道貧民區的生活是怎麼樣，新聞才不會報導，他們簡直沒有聲音一直到嘻哈音樂誕生了，所以請你不要因為聽到“販毒”這兩個字就有偏見，其實連這些rapper都不想做，但把這種東西寫進歌曲裡面才會讓人那麼shock，才有會有人聽他們的聲音，才有辦法脫離險境。

好啦 歷史課結束了，回到我這個作品的內容！希望大家喜歡，除了紀念Biggie之外，我是想要分享我在台灣的經驗，畢竟都住了7年多了，這首歌的內容對我來講已經算是常識，沒什麼了不起的，但我會忘記剛來台的時候什麼都不知道的時光，所以希望剛來台灣的老外可以聽聽我這個作品邊學習台灣規矩邊看老外唱流利原創的中文歌詞。希望台灣朋友也很喜歡，好像沒幾個月都會有一個老外因為闖禍就出現在新聞上然後被罵慘了，外國人因為怕破壞我們形象也會跟著罵哦，但我希望台灣人也了解大部分的老外其實很乖、很尊重台灣人、欣賞當地文化，只是天天做好事並不會上新聞，所以請不要一概全，大家一起繼續努力！

Any fan of hip-hop will recognize this classic beat from the legendary BIG. Share this with a foreigner who.needa to see it.

It seems every few months or so there's one of us appearing on the news for some dumb shit, this song isn't for that person, but the timing coincided perfectly I guess. We all make mistakes and the name and shame game can be a painful repercussion, but we are all in this together at the end of the day, unfortunately. One persons mistake is a burden on all of us.

Again, I'm not taking aim at anyone, just sharing what to me is common knowledge about life in Taiwan and commemorating a rap legend. I hope you enjoy the track, and hopefully learned something. These lyrics were all written and performed myself as well, so if I can do it, so can you! Chinese is a difficult language, but it is definitely not impossible, thus that's why it is the 10th commandment. If you're going to be here, learn that shit, boyyy!

Lastly, special thanks to the ladies who participated in this video, they were super cool and we had fun (and a very special thanks to MY lady for filming it!). I originally wanted to get more Laowai in it, but I'm trying not to take forever putting up content these days and I was too shy/tired to pull the camera out on the weekend at the parties I was at, besides these girls did great! I hope to make some more fun content with my friends in the future, feel free to holler at me if you have any ideas or want to join in!

有些人會說：「如果朝鮮不是獨裁國家的話，為什麼不給外國旅客自由行呢？為什麼大部分電腦都沒連上境外的互聯網呢？」我希望那些人從不同的角度來思考這些問題。二戰期間的同盟國會開放自己的國家給德國、意大利和日本觀光客自由行嗎？別忘了，朝鮮戰爭只有停火，沒有停戰。

假如互聯網是在 1930 年代的德國發明的，而非 20 世紀下半葉的美國，而德國情報機構能暗中監督和控制一切連上該網路的任何設備（正如斯諾登透露美國國安局所做的那樣），同盟國會讓一般老百姓連上同個互聯網嗎？還是他們會跟朝鮮一樣建設自己的網路？

The radical rapper is said to be cynical.

我只想引人深思 和去偽存實
I just want to get people to think, cast aside falsities, and retain the truths,

因為從小到大有太多虛偽人士
because througout our lives, too many hypocrites

灌輸錯誤認識 使人愚昧無知
have instilled false understandings, causing us to ignorantly

地無視 顯而易見 的壓迫和暴行
disregard the clearly visible oppression and atrocities,

使人固執己見 而失去批判思考力
causing us to stubbornly cling to our own opinions and lose our ability to think critically.

一旦遇到陌生的意見 認知就失調
When we encounter unfamiliar opinions, we experience cognitive dissonance.

變本加厲地延伸原本的錯誤視角
Doubling down on our mistaken views

成為了心理防禦機制 也使我們無意識地
has become a psychological defense mechanism which causes us to unknowingly

成為壓迫自己的體制的棋子
become pawns of the system that oppresses us

即使我們自以為自己是正義的義士
although we think of ourselves as just and morally courageous people,

但其實是我們迷失於斷章取義的歷史
it is actually us who are lost in deliberately misinterpreted history.

而敵視 並歧視 被壓迫的各國人民
We vilify and discriminate against the oppressed peoples of all countries;

自以為仁義 卻把壓迫者 奉若神明
we think we are righteous, yet we deify the oppressors.

不分明侵略和防禦只要求無條件的和平
We don't differentiate between aggression and defense, we simply ask for unprincipled peace,

得到奴隸主的肯定不過不被他們尊敬
gaining the approval of slave masters but not their respect.

監禁率最高的國家被當作自由象徵
The country with the highest incarceration rate is considered to be a symbol of freedom;

最常推翻民選政府的它被當作摯友良朋
we call it our friend as it leads in overthrowing democratically elected governments.

我們只有盲人摸象般稱頌或貶斥
We make praises and criticisms based on conclusions made from bad information,

偏執地不檢視騙子掩飾的現實
stubbornly refusing to investigate the truths hidden by liars.

別人飢餓 我們說是領導人無人性
When others starve, we say their leaders are devoid of humanity

卻不記得制裁的目的 是經過餓死人民
while failing to remember that the goal of sanctions is to sabotage stability

破壞穩定 以迫使 革命群眾 放棄革命
through starvation in order to extort the revolutionary masses into giving up revolution.

如果這不是恐怖主義 那麼你的定義可能有問題
If this isn't terrorism, then your definition might be flawed.

我問你 唯一動用核武器的到底是誰？
I ask you, who is the only one to have used nuclear weapons?

為何朝鮮發展核武就被認為是罪？
Why is it considered a crime when (DPR) Korea develops nukes?

誰的奴性思維被支配得顛倒是非
Whose slave mentality's been been dominated to the point where right and wrong are inverted,

使我們把自衛視為威脅 把威脅視為慈悲？
having us believe defense is threatening and threats are benevolent?
