English Learning Ecosystem Update
As I began exploring Instagram, I struggled to find a way to deliver useful academic content. Instagram posts typically focus on images, short clips, and concise text, which are attention grabbing but not always entirely conducive to language learning. I looked over the posts of established Instagram English learning accounts, and experimented with vocabulary posts and even news posts for a couple of weeks. Not wanting to post just images, I thought about creating something new even with the rigid format of the platform.
當我開始研究怎麼用IG,我想盡了各種辦法,希望能提供大家一些實用的學術內容。 IG 的特色著重在圖片、短片以及簡潔的文字,這樣的方式雖然很容易引人注目,卻不全然有助於語言學習。我瀏覽了 IG 上英文教學網紅的貼文,並在這幾週嘗試發了一些學術單字與新聞相關的文章。我並不想只是發一些圖片,而思考著要如何在既有框架下創作一些新的東西。

So far, this is what I have at the moment. I will post Word of the Day (每日一詞), high frequency vocabulary words that you see in academic texts and sometimes on the news. These Tier 2 academic vocabulary words are not exclusive to a single domain and complement the theme-based approach I’ve taken with my mind-mapping vocabulary class. To help students use more precise and common academic phrases, I then added Academic Phrases (每日一句), set phrases that appear in both academic speech and writing. These phrases have varying functions from introducing a topic to comparing and contrasting ideas. There is a difference between speech and writing, so I picked words that could be used for both. If one is used only in a specific context, I will make note of it in the video recording. This series of posts will help students with language output, and can be found under the following hashtag 學術英語片語.

Last, I will follow up with an abridged version of breaking news (時事英文) with high frequency collocations and audio recordings. This will provide students with the input of not only individual words, but how to use them in output (speech and writing) with context. While all these news posts might seem independent at first, I will eventually link and organize them by theme when there are enough posts. Along with my news class, these extra posts will help students stay aware of current events, acquire set phrases used in journalism, and develop critical thinking. The expression, coined by the Taiwanese, is catching up fast on the mainland as rampant corruption is exposed at all levels of the bureaucracy.”

我個人會用「middleman」或「go-between」。
請注意,「middleman」是指批貨後轉售他人者,或協助他人安排商業交易者。該詞本身並不具有任何犯罪或不法行為等負面意涵(negative connotations),亦須有上下文才足以呈現「白手套」的概念。
另一方面,「go-between」是在雙方無法見面或不想見面時,將消息從一人(或一個團隊)傳給另一人(或另一個團隊)的人。例如,聯合國代表將充當兩國領導人的中間人(或掮客)——「go-between」,而它的搭配你可以用「act/serve as a go-between」。「go-between」 的一個同義詞是「intermediary」。
❖再次提醒各位,若缺乏前後文,這些用語就不能完全代表「白手套」的涵義。底下我將舉出一些在腐敗情況中所使用的例子。

【王老師的英文筆記術】首次公開的英文筆記法,這樣整理,幫助你突破英文學習瓶頸
若說想要學好一個外語需要做筆記、做學習紀錄,我相信不會有人反對。但實際到底要「怎樣做」學習筆記,卻是很少人談到的話題。今天想要跟大家分享一個我自己很常做筆記的方式,對於口說(尤其)和寫作特別有幫助,能讓學習更「印象深刻」。
大家先幫我看看下面2個contexts:
【Context 1】 在職場上,上司覺得有一件事情怪怪的需要調查一下,有兩個人各自這樣回答:
• No problem. I will conduct an investigation into it.
• Sure, I will look into it!
【Context 2】在LOUISA跟很熟的朋友聊天。朋友面到了一個新工作,不知道要不要去。有2種講法,選哪一種呢?
• It is advised that you not start a new job without contemplating it.
• You don't wanna dive into a new job without giving it a good think.
很明顯地,第一種雖然也是對的英文,但是聽起來就是太 formal。而這是在台灣學習英文的我們,很容易有的狀況。用起來老外聽得懂,但他們心中默默覺得我們用得「很可愛」。
所以在學習時,弄懂什麼很口語什麼很正式、什麼比較萬用,就特別重要了。用法的正式度,我這邊先粗分成3 種:「口語」、「一般」、和「學術」。
(Note: 當然會有些例子像英美的大學教授,有時在日常的用語就講得文鄒鄒。但此文先排除那些特例)
如以下文意相似 (not identical) 的句子:
【Comparison 1】
(口語) Politicians often beat around the bush (拐彎抹角, idiom) and don't give answers to questions.
(口語 / 一般) Politicians often skirt around the truth and don't give direct answers to questions.
(學術) Politicians often equivocate and don't give direct answers to questions.
【Comparison 2】
(口語) She gets most of her inspiration from art museums.
(口語 / 一般) Most of her inspiration comes from art museums.
(學術) She derives a wealth of inspiration from art museums.
如果你喜歡這樣的整理,下次在看 Netflix, 電影時聽到的 idioms, phrasal verbs 等等時,記得延伸學習想想看,那個用法你想不想得到另外不同正式程度的用法。例如,聽到 pack the job in,可以順便聯想、補充紀錄quit 和 tender one's resignation.
我的猜測是,對大多台灣學生來說,第一秒想得到的可能是「一般」比較多。真的很口語道地、或是很學術的用法,可能是需要多花時間回想、搜尋、學習、記憶的。
下次不仿試試看,在筆記本中除了記憶你想要學的單字、用法、例句等等之外,也可以從這篇所介紹的角度去學習喔!
