(Amie Parry)
💕Why I chose Taiwan #16 – Amie Parry
“I grew up in a small city in inland California called San Bernardino. I went to college and graduate school in San Diego. I got my PhD in literature. We were all expected to learn at least one language, so I did Chinese. I traveled to Taiwan with a friend right after I graduated from college in 1987. We came here to teach English and study Chinese for six months, then I traveled around Asia by myself with a backpack.
I originally wanted to study classical Chinese poetry. I got a Fulbright grant and I came back here. I started going to the poetry nights that were happening at that time. I met some of the modernist poets, and I switched my focus to the modernist poetry of the 60s, 70s, and 80s in Taiwan. I wrote my dissertation on modernism as a way of understanding the parts of modernity that are hard to know in the existing political language that we inherit. I think that experience in historical formation is always more complicated than the language.
These poems are not explicitly political; they're very experimental and strange. At the time, the modernist poets I met were mostly 外省, men who had been drafted and come over with the KMT, so they had experienced war and displacement, and a very intense and traumatic historical moment. People experienced it differently, and at that time, it was a hard thing to talk about. Later, I wrote a book about poetry, but I just focused on one or two poets I find really, really fascinating. And I was asking some of the same kinds of questions: how can these poems help you think about certain topics that are hard to think about?
At that time, Modernist poetry was a kind of an institution already. There was a journal called 現代詩, “Modern Poetry,” a really important journal that most of these poets were published in. Some of them combined poetry and theater. There's just so much going on in Taiwan in terms of poetry and performance and literature. It's just amazing. And I'm very interested in it at all, but I haven't kept up. After I finished my dissertation, I got a job offer at 交大. I thought, wow, there's something really amazing happening intellectually here. When my first book came out, it actually got an award in the U.S., and I was so surprised. I didn't even know it had been nominated. I asked them, ‘Why did you choose my book?’ And they said, because one of the chapters has a transnational of framework for the whole argument, so it wasn't like you used Western theories and Eastern texts, it's like the whole knowledge part is coming out of both places.
I currently teach in the English department at National Central University. I'm the chair and I teach writing classes, literature classes, and literary and cultural theory classes. Since my first visit to Taiwan in 1987, I think people are a little more comfortable talking to people from different places. In my personal interactions, I feel a difference, like a greater openness. Back then, there were so many interesting things happening here, all at one time, and that's the time that I happened to be here. And I made good friends in my personal life and in my intellectual life. And I think those are the things that made me come back: like if you feel that there's something interesting happening and there's some way that you can support it. I guess that's a way of feeling at home.” — Amie Parry

In 2017, astronomers in Maui spotted a mysterious object moving very fast around the sun. They observed it for two months before it disappeared out of sight. They think it came from another star far far away, outside the solar system. So they gave it a poetic Hawaiian name, ‘Oumuamua’, meaning messenger. Some even speculate it might be alien technology!
The likely truth is just as fascinating. A new theory proposes that Oumuamua is a piece of frozen nitrogen ice, originally from an exoplanet in orbit around its star, much like Pluto orbits our sun. A collision of planets ejected this chunk of the exoplanet out of its original solar system. It then spent the last half a billion years or so travelling through space, until it happened to visit our solar system and be spotted by earthlings in 2017.
Isn’t it amazing that from brief observations of a tiny fuzzy blob in telescopes, scientists can work backwards and deduce all these details? Science is fun. :) – LHL

JJ Lin 林俊傑 《倖存者· 如你》維度二 首張全英文EP《Like You Do》
OUT NOW 全面數位發行 https://jjlin.lnk.to/LYDAY
Have you imagined a world where
You’re more than just You?
What would that be like?
Drifter • Like You do - a Double-dimensional, deluxe EP creatively led by JJ Lin, from music productions to visual concepts. The music narrative of DRIFTER • LIKE YOU DO is inspired by a concept JJ has been ruminating on - the possibility of a parallel universe.
In this latest release which marks JJ’s 14th album, as well as his first english EP throughout his illustrious career of 18 years, JJ delves into his innermost thoughts and feelings, redefining his music perspectives to put forward a stripped down and introspective representation of his music and self.
In Quantum Theory
Space and time are not continuous
A parallel universe is a possibility
Could it be possible that somewhere, somehow
In an obscure corner of the universe
An infinite number of us exist?
Where perhaps, I could be you, and you could be me?
I seem to be a Drifter in this vast expanse... Like You Do.
-
[DRIFTER • LIKE YOU DO ]
Part One: The 1st Dimension - DRIFTER
Music has always been an expression of self for JJ. His journey of self-discovery could be traced back to his From M.E. To Myself (2015) album, with him eventually finding the connection between himself and the world, and shared through his Message in a Bottle (2017) album.
In the recent years, JJ embarked on a different route to self-discovery as he shifts the focus of his music from self to “you”. Conveyed through his double EP DRIFTER • LIKE YOU DO, JJ propounds a new direction for self-reflection.
DRIFTER EP features six brand new Mandarin songs that weaved together a complete concept of: What would you do, if you, were not just you? The songs inspire us to contemplate the possibility that our consciousness could determine who we are - there could be multiple endings to every story, and when we believe so, the future will be limitless.
Part Two: The 2nd Dimension - LIKE YOU DO
An extension of Drifter, LIKE YOU DO explores a self-examining concept: What is left after you rid yourself of expectations?
When darkness descends, have you, in pursuit of survival, stumbled upon another version of yourself that is so foreign yet familiar? You could be that drifter, that is the only glimpse of hope left in a despondent world. Which version of you would emerge in face of adversity? If a parallel universe does exist, JJ is breaking out of his shell and introducing the hidden version of himself that we have yet to meet via LIKE YOU DO.
Partnered with new music collaborators Fernando Garibay, Nasri Atweh, Joshua Kissiah Cumbee, Ramiro Padilla and Daniel Padilla, JJ endeavours to offer fresh perspectives and sounds for this EP.
The journey and story of this alternate JJ Lin has just begun.
—
“All these years, one thing I’ve learnt is that it’s one of the hardest things in life to accept the flawed version of ourselves. We work so hard to be the best and to be perfect; many times we want to believe that we are unstoppable, and that only by being strong, we can be successful.
“Like You Do” to me is the opposite of that.
Every song is a reflection of the darker version of myself. And I’ve found a sense of healing, by reaching in and realising that true strength is found in embracing every version of the self. It’s only when you strip yourself of all expectations, that your every next step will be a form of gain and reward.
There is beauty in that.”

然而,【Like You Do】對我而言正是相反的。
【Like You Do】中的JJ Lin是一鍵歸零,

◆A brief self-introduction◆
I'm Shizuka, the hot spring model. I usually work as a caregiver at a nursing home.I use my days off to visit my favorite mixed baths. It's a self-produced tour that doesn't generate income. I pay for all my hot spring visits and have been to 250 mixed hot springs across the country!
I've toured mixed baths around the country, and I have been making videos and blogs(Ameblo) of my experience and impressions of the hot springs.
I am always on the search for what suits me best. There is no good bath or bad bath, what suits you may change depending on you in that situation, and that's what I call a good bath (hot spring).

Taking a bath is a natural routine after "sleeping" and "eating" in Japanese people's minds. It's a routine task. In particular, soaking in a hot tub is a unique part of Japanese culture.
And that's why we have onsen in Japan.
Whether you like it or not, everyone goes on a trip to a hot spring resort at least once in their lives.
Onsen are a unique part of Japanese culture.
Some people are attracted by the smell of sulfur and others
taking a bath together with a large group of people and literally having "naked company" can make you feel like you've grown closer to your friends.
When you soak naked in a hot spring and let out a breath of air, you can talk about things you wouldn't normally talk about.
It takes the edge off! and is a stress relief!
Bathing in nature while bathing with negative ions in the air is more effective based on scientific evidence.
And a "hot water cure" used for medical treatment is another thing even though there is no medical evidence to support this, but the effects of hot springs on the human body are wonderful. There are diseases that cannot be cured by doctors, but if you are in a hot spring...
I am a hot spring YouTuber.
I love hot springs.
Why?
Because it is a place where I could take a relaxing bath with my favorite family.
It was a strange coincidence to take a bath in a mixed bathing hot spring.
Of course you feel the gaze of the opposite sex, and you may also feel the embarrassment.
I'm not saying that I don't want to be seen, but after all, hot springs are an important part of Japanese culture, and I think it's important to keep in mind the importance of good manners when taking a bath.
Taking a bath naked is something that Japanese people have been trained to do since they were children.
More and more mixed bathing hot springs are prohibiting bathing without clothing.
It is no longer possible to open a new mixed bathing facility in today's Japan. Therefore, I would like you all to protect and support the existing bathing facilities.I would be very happy if my videos gives reasons for this.
I hope that this will be one of the reasons why a girl who just loves hot springs will be able to experience the Japanese culture of hot springs.
