英國的Howletts Wild Animal Park發起「#猛瑪之旅」，準備把包括照片中這隻我在19年底看到的小象在內(印象中當時僅有兩周大)，園區內的13隻非洲象全數送回肯亞。

在動物園界乃至保育圈中，Howletts與他背後的Aspinall Foundation一直以來都處於爭議的風口浪尖。從創始人語不驚人死不休的發言到基金會的一系列決策都讓人嘆為觀止。
這次與Kenya Wildlife Service以及Sheldrick Wildlife Trust合作的猛瑪之旅將是他們有史以來最大規模的「野放活動」，勢必會與他們先前的西部低地大猩猩與黑犀牛野放計畫一同載入史冊。
但考慮到這13隻象中的12隻都在圈養環境中出生，野放的形式肯定會是軟野放，也就是先以半圈養的形式讓動物逐漸習慣野生環境，同時想要在動物清醒的狀況下運送一個完整的象群也無疑會是財力與人力的雙重挑戰，無論成效如何都值得動物園與保育界持續投入關注。
※題外話，不負責任的猜一下，除了兌現基金會的保育承諾以外，及時止損，擺脫在疫情當中維持一個象群的開銷，或許才是此行動的主要目的。
#奇獸之死 🇰🇪
「白變長頸鹿，即將成為傳說中的神獸。」東非肯亞一座自然保護區，日前證實一對白色長頸鹿母子，慘遭盜獵者殺害。當地保育團體表示，白色長頸鹿在全世界幾乎絕無僅有，對於肯亞的物種保育、基因研究甚至當地觀光都是重大打擊。自然天堂的肯亞，逐漸淪為野生動物的葬場。千禧年以來，儘管當局試圖斬斷非法獵殺動物的黑市犯罪鏈，但卻依然難以遏止動物悲歌。
這2隻被獵殺的白色長頸鹿母子，原是生活於肯亞東北部加里薩（Garissa）的「伊沙格比尼牛羚自然保護區」。不同於一般黃底褐班的長頸鹿，全無斑點的雪白長頸鹿極為罕見，自從2016、17年首次在坦尚尼亞與肯亞先後遭到目擊發現後，便受到世界稱奇關注。
為什麼長頸鹿會變成白色？其實不是因為白化症，而是「白變症」（leucism）。不同於白化症僅缺乏黑色素，白變症動物因為缺乏所有色素，身體才呈現全部雪白的樣貌。兩者最大的差別在於，白化動物的眼睛一般呈紅色；白變動物則仍是深色。
根據當地保育組織「Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy」，保護區內的白色長頸鹿已消失3個多月，日前保護區管理員巡視時，才意外發現2隻白色長頸鹿——1隻長頸鹿媽媽，以及1隻她生下的小長頸鹿——的屍體。獸骨暴露，明顯「遭到武裝盜獵者殺害」。
該組織表示，由於全世界尚未發現其他白色長頸鹿，這2隻白色長頸鹿慘遭獵殺後，另1隻由同一個長頸鹿媽媽生下、未被殺害的小長頸鹿，應是當前已知唯一一隻白色長頸鹿。然而，長頸鹿並非動物盜獵的大宗目標，也未特別出現在各種「藥補」傳聞中，當局亦沒有詳細說明，白色長頸鹿被取走的身體部位有哪些；盜獵者的具體身分與動機，目前都還沒有眉目，仍在調查當中。
「這對於當地投注全心的基因研究來說，是個巨大損失，也讓努力化為泡影。」保育組織表示，自從肯亞發現白色長頸鹿以來，便投入許多心力在有關基因研究上，不只如此，對於肯亞的物種保育及觀光產業，也是一大士氣打擊。
事實上，非洲動物盜獵自千禧年以來，早已形成全球犯罪產業鏈。以非洲長頸鹿為例，過去30年就因為掠奪動物肉骨、皮革，加上人口增長與產業開發、棲地面積縮小，野生數量大幅減少了40%，從1985年的15.5萬隻，到2015年僅剩不到10萬隻。
除了長頸鹿之外，肯亞的大象與犀牛獵殺犯罪也極為猖獗，尤以滿足亞洲等新興市場對於象牙、犀牛角等大量需求為主要原因。由於肯亞東部緊鄰索馬利亞，來自索國的不少武裝份子，也常會跨境參與肯亞非法盜獵，靠著野生動物的血肉，分一杯羹。

The reversal allows for these products to be used in medical research or healing, uses long since proven to have no benefits to humans. This change will certainly lead to more pressure on already terribly vulnerable animal populations and place in greater danger the conservationists, rangers and communities who fight for the survival of these majestic creatures.
Here, Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet is comforted moments before he passed away March 19, 2018 in northern Kenya. Sudan was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralove in the #Czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta and has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. If there is any meaning in his death, its that Sudan can be our final wake up call. In a world of 7 billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of the landscape and part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves.
Today, fewer 30,000 rhinos and 3,900 tigers remain in the wild. We are witnessing extinction on our watch and must help them by speaking out and supporting conservation efforts worldwide, especially among the indigenous communities who are on the front lines every day against poaching.
