【Market Commentary】As semiconductor process technologies approach physical limits, chip manufacturing must rely on breakthroughs in transistor architecture, backend packaging technology or material development in order to improve performance or reduce power consumption.

Both Samsung and TSMC, the only foundries with leading-edge process technologies at the moment, are expected to mass produce with the 3nm process in 2H22, with Samsung being the first to adopt GAAFET architecture while TSMC sticks with FinFET at the 3nm node.

TrendForce believes that, for the first wave of 3nm products, TSMC will primarily manufacture chips for HPC applications, whereas Samsung will instead focus on smartphone applications.
