Every time the school holidays end, I look forward to the next and start to think about the things we would do and places we would go.

It doesn't mean we have to step beyond our shore because I think there are plenty of fun places on the sunny island for us to explore - many of which we have yet to check out. I'm already looking forward to the month long June holidays even though we will not be going on a vacation this time round. I intend to take the kids to hop around the island, go outdoors every day and try out new experiences without having to spend a bomb.

To be able to have these kids with me from the moment I wake up and knowing that we have the whole day ahead of us to do whatever we want to, I guess that's the best thing about school holidays for me. Of course, being able to stay up late, sleep in more and not having to worry about daily homework, weekly spellings and enrichment classes, that's a bonus too.

Family time, it means everything to me.

Fun sensory play at home! So we bought 2.5kg of beans from the wet market this morning, much to the surprise of the auntie who thought I was going to use them to make pillows. Haha.

Anyway, we tried green beans too, which are much harder to clean up because they are smaller. Then we tried black eyed peas (*cue song "Where is the love"*) but they are not round and don't roll down the slide well. So, it's soybeans today and the kids are really loving every bit of their sensory playtime.

I've been trying to cut down television time for the kids so this has been working very well for us this week because they just can't get enough of it. Of course, there will still be a little mess to clean up and I am finding beans all over my living room when mopping the floor today, but I am reminding myself that it's all worthwhile and it's much better than them playing with kinetic sand too. Haha. Will your kids love this idea too?

A reminder to self: Let our kids be kids and enjoy their growing up years.

So the story here is the big sister, who is in P3 this year, has been refusing to do her home assignments or revision for her upcoming exams. We had a long weekend and on Thurday, we watched a movie and let her take time off from studies. Friday came, she didn't want to do anything in the morning and we went out almost the whole day. Saturday came and first half of the day, she just wanted to sleep and play. That was when I kind of lost my cool and snapped at her for being so unmotivated.

It took me a while to realise that maybe I just needed to take a step back and let her be in control of her time, even though I'd much prefer that she finishes her work before we head out for play. Perhaps, constant nagging and trying to be in control are slowly having an adverse effect and for someone like her who is usually dependable and responsible, and who will be hitting double digits of age next year, it is time for me to let go and trust her more.

Eventually, we managed to cool down, talk it out and she surprised me by finishing her written homework and even packing her bag on Saturday night. I guess, she just wanted herself to be in more control of her time and the things she could or could not do.

As for me, I probably have a long way to go in learning to discipline my kids and instilling the right values in them while not keeping too tight a leash. After almost a decade of being a mum, I still feel like a newbie on some days because there are so many new challenges that take me by surprise now and then, and they never fail to test my patience and my limits.

That said, I'm happy to see her enjoying our outdoor time on weekends, be it strolling in the park, visiting the gardens, jumping in puddles, scooting in our neighbourhood or having fun at the playground with her siblings. This one is growing up just too quickly and I hope to cherish more of such moments with her before she becomes a young lady.
