No phones, no tablets, no TV.

We had a screen-free Sunday morning and went for a mum-and-kids breakfast followed by scooting to the playground and then spending two hours on art and craft activities.

It is really important for kids to have free play time where they are given the opportunity to explore, be imaginative, try out new things, get their hands dirty and understand that there is so much we can do outside of the screen.

Thanks to @playbeyondthescreensg for affirming my beliefs and coming up with this great initiative for parents and kids to remind ourselves what matters as we bond over DIY activities.

The kids said at the end of the session "Mama, we don't need screens to keep us happy, right?" You are absolutely right, my dears. All we need is some creativity, lots of love and each other.

So the kids set up their own restaurant called "Rainbow Café", thought of their own slogan which says "where happiness lives" (果然是我的孩子), did an elaborate menu offering a good variety of food, allocated prices for each item, designed discount vouchers to entice diners to return, opened slots for cooking classes and are busy every night cooking up a storm in their kitchen.

Right after CNY where they saw us organising steamboats, they also added a hotpot menu which offers chicken, beef, fish head, tom yum and even collagen (yum!) soup bases, along with lots of ingredients including my favourite Tang Oh and quail eggs too. So very cute! Never underestimate their creativity or what they are learning every day by just observing us, yeah?

All I have to do is to place my orders, 'eat and drink', give my comments and thank them for a wonderful meal. Haha. Oh yeah, I am also sourcing for more kitchen toys to help them expand their venture and be able to do more, try more, learn more and play more. Way to go, my little chefs!

Don't just watch our kids play, join them instead.

I remember climbing up the spider web with my friends back in secondary school. It was one of the things we would do when we stayed over at a chalet. Each of us would then find a spot to lie and rest as we tried to spot shooting stars in the night sky. Yup, those were the days.

The kids and I stumbled upon this rope structure yesterday and of course, they were all excited to climb up! It wasn't that easy to scale because it was tall and the gaps were far, and even the girls were a little scared to get to the top, not to mention the boy who had trouble even getting up. Lol.

I wanted him to know that he could do it too so I held his hand and we climbed up step by step. At times, he couldn't reach and I had to haul him or support his weight but with each step, he gained more confidence and determination. Eventually, we reached the midway 'seat' where he felt so proud and happy to sit down and didn't wanna leave. Haha.

If not for the fact that we were barefooted - the ropes can get painful after a while - because we didn't wear covered shoes and that we were surrounded by the haze, I think we would have all reached the top. Well, that means that's always a next time for us to try again, right? Reminding myself to feel young at heart and always join in the fun with my little ones.
