It's a solo parenting week for me and today, I raised my voice at the kids more times than I can count. Gosh, I really need to learn to control myself better and not nitpick every now and then when things don't go my way - a messy house, half done chores, toys all over the place, incessant complaints etc.
The best part of the day was letting the kids try making their first ham and cheese omelette for dinner and they did it as a team - one beat the eggs, one cut the ham and cheese and one helped with the frying. Honestly, I didn't like it so much but these kids, they ate every single bit of it and said it was very yummy. Haha.
Yup, I think I found a way to make them stop being picky about food and that is... to let them be the ones who help in preparing it. This way, they can understand the time, effort and heart that goes behind every dish we cook at home, no matter how simple.
Tomorrow will be a better day for all! Now for some me-time while the lights are out, woohoo.

It was a rainy afternoon so I brought the two younger ones to have lunch at the food court after picking the sister from school. Yup, we usually try to eat in kopitiams or food courts to save cost if we do dine out.
There are many occasions where passers-by are amazed, and at times appalled, by the things we do. Like how I leave the kids out of sight while I go get food (if not, how ley?), how they don't get to play with phones at mealtimes but find ways to entertain themselves, how the 5yo goes to toilet all by herself even if it is on another level, how the toddler eats on his own - which means I have to clean up before we leave everytime.
This boy really loves eating his noodles and he has been using chopsticks (the real ones, not training chopsticks which never worked for us) since he was over a year old. Was amused to see how he overcame his problems on his own today, like blowing the noodles when he realised it was too hot, trying to eat the noodles which went too far inside the chopsticks, and then dropping them only to have to start all over again.
I met my bestie last week who was so amazed and said that her son of similar age can't sit still or eat on his own yet. To me, it's all about letting them try and helping them to practise and get better and better over time. More often than not, they just need us to let go and give them the freedom and opportunity to learn. Oh, as well as clean up the mess after. Haha.
P.S. Thanks to the fellow mum at the next table who came up to say to me "You have a very good daughter. She took care of her brother well when you were away." It might be a simple gesture but it goes a long way in reminding me not to nitpick but to see the good in my kids. I must always remember that.

Her first time frying vegetables! Not really the best result, but definitely a good effort. To be honest, I think I am better off in the kitchen without the kids because they either make a mess, slow me down or turn everything upside down. But I keep reminding myself that you have to let them start somewhere, if not, how will they ever learn?
So, it's not really about having an extra pair of hands to help me in the house; it's more about giving them the opportunity to learn, to try, and to get better and better over time.
She happily announced to the other siblings at the dinner table "这个我炒的 (I fried this)" and that look of achievement and satisfaction on her face, now that's priceless. Thank you, my dear Ariel!
