"MAYBE IT'S TIME TO REST ON OUR LAURELS."
--
Pandemic has brought up a lot of things I need to heal through, and this is one of them: the idea of the "perpetual achievement". Sound familiar?
We glooorify it. What you did today is good, yeah - but what about what you'll do TOMORROW? You'd better be going higher, stronger, faster - never stop, don't you dare. Post the next ig picture. Generate tomorrow's tiktok content. Hope for likes. Touched the sky? Blow a hole through the atmosphere and torpedo straight on to the next burning star. The you from yesterday? We don't know her. We're better. Upgraded. V 2.0.
I've been living my life like this for years now, but the past 2 years have forced us all to BE slowed down and re-evaluate.
Don't get me wrong. Ambition & achievement are wonderful. (There are certainly many more things I want to achieve, and much coming up that I'm going to be sharing with you guys. Never stop dreaming.) But dreaming becomes a problem when it turns living into a nightmare, because you can't stop trying to put distance between yourself and yourself. Stop being the shadow you are continually trying to win. It's EXHAUSTING. Aren't you exhausted? I am.
So maybe the truth is this: that we were put on this earth to do ONE good thing with our lives. ONE properly good thing.
And maybe that's winning a great Waterloo style battle, or achieving a certain dream. Maybe it's finishing one great performance. One great thesis. A beautiful painting. An espresso magnum opus.
And then - we let that be enough. And we rest on our laurels. "Greatness" does not have to be continually proven. Likes are transient, clout & remembrance fade. Do what you do because you love it, and it is good, and it fulfils you. If when your day comes to an end you can say "I did this one thing to the best of my ability and it was good" - that is enough, hero. Be at peace. The bards will sing of that one deed. The song will be equally wonderful without infinite stanzas.
So rest on your laurels, goddesses. You've earned it.

Brave the pain, Hongkongers (Lee Yee)
In his comments on my yesterday’s article, a reader left me a YouTube link to an English version of “March of The Volunteers”rendered by Paul Robeson, an American singer who was celebrated in my youthhood. The lyrics are as follows,
「Arise, you who refuse to be bond-slaves./Let's stand up and fight for/Liberty and true democracy!/All our world is facing/The chains of the tyrant./Everyone who works for freedom/Is now crying./Arise! Arise! Arise!/All of us with one heart/With the torch of freedom!/March on!/With the torch of freedom!/March on! March on!March on and on!」
Information shows that Robeson chanting this English version in a concert held in New York in 1941 was captured in the video. That year, Liu Liang-mo, a leftist conductor, was dispatched by YMCA to further study in America. Since the Pacific War broke out, Liu had been engaged in a propaganda war against Japan. Presented by Lin Yu-tang, an eminent Chinese novelist and philosopher, he met Robeson and sang in front of the American a few war songs of anti-Japanese invasion, including “March of The Volunteers”. A few weeks later, Robeson made an announcement that he would sing a song named “Chee Lai” for Chinese. He then vocalized in Chinese before belting out the English lyrics mentioned above.
In the English version, no “Chinese nation”, “the Great Wall”nor “enemies’ gunfire” is found, which makes “you who refuse to be bond-slaves” even more outstanding. Without distorting the original gist of the Chinese lyrics, the import of the English version, which encourages people to throw off the shackles of tyranny and fight for freedom as well as genuine democracy, is even more universal and perpetual.
Fights for freedom have been waxing and waning in succession throughout times and across lands for the fact that history has unequivocally manifested that people are being relentlessly enslaved by tyranny and freedom persistently suppressed by authoritarians.
Since 1997, after Hong Kong people had enjoyed liberty for more than one hundred years, freedom has been continually eroded and chipped away. In contrary to the authoritarian of gigantic power, Hong Kong is isolated and feeble. Being put in a vulnerable position, Hong Kong people used to have only three options: 1. Abscond from home, which means emigration; 2. Get used to living in a place with less and less freedom; 3. Haggle over protection for ourselves in an inferior position. The fourth one, “struggle to resist at the cost of one’s life” , had not even been contemplated until the anti-extradition amendment bill movement last year, in which young people were the vanguard and more than half of the population got embroiled.
Why did I put forward half of the population, but not a small minority figured out by the Chinese Communist Party? The reason is undisputed with just a glimpse of the mainstream opinion online, 2 million people in the demonstration and the ballot of the District Council Election.
Dragging on and on, the last year struggle, which tired Hong Kong people out, was to no avail. Since the Hong Kong version of national security law was tabled, the three options mentioned above have resurfaced. Confronted with the peremptory China, which has been legislating for Hong Kong in violation of the Basic Law, some legal professionals and democrats in town would rather succumb to the illegitimacy and counter-propose certain terms and conditions to safeguard the rights of Hong Kong people, including the provisions of retroactivity wiping off, interpretation of the law in accordance with common law, defendants tried in Hong Kong’s courts, stipulation of a sunset clause, etc.
When the US intended revising Hong Kong’s special status with regard to the Hong Kong version of national security law, some of them suggested that to preserve a firewall between Hong Kong and China, the US should conserve a little bit of the special status.
The haggling over protection for Hong Kong people in an inferior position, the third option, is surely not out of bad intention. Be that as it may, regarding what we have been experiencing in the past 20 years, showing the white feather would not stop the mighty authoritarian from seizing the overall jurisdiction of Hong Kong. Though conflicts might be alleviated, the plight of Hong Kong people would only worsen in front of the insatiable authoritarian. Worse still, Hong Kong people knuckling under to it would hinder the US from sanctioning China and Hong Kong.
Getting pained by uncompromising struggles has to be anticipated. The US sanctions on Hong Kong are definitely painful to Hong Kong people. In the past couple of days, Yuen Kung-yi said: To take this route, Hong Kong people should brave the pain.
Perhaps those who come to the middle ground intend Hong Kong people to reserve the minimum protection. Yet, meanwhile, I am reminded of the wisdom of a classic philosopher, Friedrich Hayek: Those who fantasize about trading their basic freedom off for minimum protection would eventually find out that they are given neither freedom nor protection.
Robeson’s husky singing is reverberating in my ears.

I just returned from 3 weeks in Kyrgyzstan. As a landscape photographer I have travelled lots countries in the world so I guess I can say I am ‘used’ to beautiful landscapes. Until recently Central Asia was unknown territory for me. I always love to explore countries that are not really on the radar of photographers and travellers in general. It inspires and pushes my creativity. The most important reason for visiting Kyrgyzstan was to meet my girlfriend’s family. But other than that I was triggered by the beauty of its nature. As a photographer and nature lover, you know that feeling when you see that untouched beauty? Crazy mountains with open valleys? It triggers you somehow. That’s what Kyrgyzstan did to me.
Kyrgyzstan doesn’t require a visa to access. It’s fairy easy to travel to if you’re willing to transfer somewhere. It doesn’t really offer direct flights from most places. You’ll be flying into the capital Bishkek which is already surrounded by crazy mountains. It starts right there. Upon entering the city you already see high snowcapped peaks around you. Basically this whole country has crazy heights and insane mountains. It’s on another level than what we’re used to in Europe, especially for me living in the Netherlands below sea level ;). Being on an altitude around 3000m is fairly common here with peaks over 7000m and occasional hikes to 4000m+. I had a bit of trouble with the altitudes in the beginning of my visit but this disappeared after a while.
Nature in Kyrgyzstan is really untouched and lots of locals live like nomads. The countryside roads are rather bad. I was actually surprised that most are marked as roads on Google Maps because a normal rental car would never be able to drive there. You need at least a high 4×4. But with some effort (driving ‘bad’ roads and hiking steep paths) you’ll be able to see some of the most beautiful untouched nature you’ve ever seen. Endless valleys with huge mountains around you, crystal clear turquoise lakes, wild eagles, canyons, you name it. This country has it all. I was surprised by its variety of landscapes in a rather small area. Just a few hours driving would bring me from snowcapped mountains to landscapes that looked like the moon with red canyons and unearthly textures. Americans will know this as ‘Utah’. Because of the remote areas there is literally zero light pollution here. During the night looking up you will see the brightest milky way in the sky you’ve ever seen.
When you’re exploring the valleys you’ll see the locals from time to time. They live in Yurts. Yurts are small ‘houses’ that look like a big tent. These people are mostly shepherds taking care of cattle in the summer. You’ll see hundreds of sheep or horses with glaciers in the background. It’s a really impressive sight. These shepherds live without any luxury like electricity or a toilet. All of the locals I met in the mountains were friendly. They didn’t speak English much but I think they enjoyed some variety of company as they’re in the mountains for months without much conversation. It’s life at its simplest. It got me thinking if these people actually need more. They’re just living day by day, with their cattle, not worrying about anything in the world. Literally disconnected from the world and living in their own small world. Just surviving.
During my travel I visited Bishkek, Chaek, Song-Kul, Around Isskyl-Kul lake and Karakol. There is still lots of more places to explore for me so I hope to return soon.
I’d like to mention that despite lots of people think the ‘stans’ are ‘dangerous’ to travel to I’ve never really felt unsafe. Especially in the mountains where no one really cares that you’re walking around with expensive gear. I slept a lot in tents, vulnerable to robbery but nothing ever happened to me. I was often accompanied with locals though, either my girlfriend (and family) or people from Visit Karakol, a travel agency from Karakol that helped me a lot in getting to places that I normally wouldn’t be able to go to by myself.
Kyrgyzstan is an amazingly beautiful country with lots of really untouched nature and I would definitely recommend visiting it.
I tried my best to capture a general overview of the beauty of the country. As I am a landscape photographer I focus on the beauty of the country mainly regarding nature. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

Finally, 400K Subscribers. It's been a long way! We're really sorry we couldn't celebrate by doing recital, concert or fans event due to the coronavirus issues. Still, we prepared this special video for you, hope you like it.
I've played them a lot at live streaming, but I rarely do videos for Studio Ghibli Animations. Not because I don't like it, it's just because there were too many covers already on YouTube. So I think this time it's a good opportunity to make it a medley with a different style of video, adding some words I'd like to say to you, hope you like this video.
As many of you might know, maybe it's the change of time, or change of the algorithm, change of YouTube, musicians on YouTube lives much harder than 4 or 5 years ago. We all have to find another way out to keep living. So in the past few month we've been working on streaming platforms, digital albums, and now is the Patreon. It would be really helpful that fans support us with those platforms IF you're able and willing to.
And just to be clear, I won't quit doing music videos even if it keep going worse, because doing these things including performing, recording and editing is one of my personal interest, that's why I started all this in the first place, and that's something never change.
Once again, thanks for all the supporters around the world. We couldn't have done it without you. I don't know how far we can go, but as long as there's audience waiting for me, the music would never stop. No matter what way you choose to support us, we truly appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.

i came to wales to complete my final semester for degree and here, in uwtsd i under went subjects in relation to film & media or in other words filmmaking. The university that i went to in Malaysia was called International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW) & here I officially completed my bachelor's programme in professional communication alongside a dual award provided by University of Wales Trinity Saint David. There are various UWTSD campuses scattered around Wales and I was placed in Carmarthen based on the course that I took which aligned to mass communication. Fortunately, I did this semester free of charge in Wales due to the exchange programme deal that IUMW has for Professional Communication students like myself. The only thing we had to pay was accommodation, flight tickets and food. This exchange programme has without a doubt changed me into a better person academically as well as my personal growth as a human being especially in the midst of this pandemic. This may not be a "complete" tour due to unaccessible areas that you will see in this video, but I'm glad I get to share with you guys a place where I called home.
