20 years ago today, the horrific terror attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York City changed the world forever.
The danger to us was nearer than we imagined. We discovered among us a terrorist group that was planning similar attacks on multiple targets here. Fortunately ISD acted in time to prevent this, and subsequent attacks.
The greater threat for multi-racial and multi-religious Singapore was not physical, but whether this would damage our social cohesion. We drew on the trust built up over many years among our different communities and with the Government. Working together, we overcame powerful forces unleashed by the extremist attacks that could have pulled us apart.
The fight against terrorism is far from over. Digital media has allowed extremist ideologies to spread and poison minds. At the same time, our racial harmony is still work in progress. On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, let us resolve to fortify ourselves so that should we ever face another such test one day, we will come through again, stronger, as one united people.

Yesterday’s National Day Rally at Mediacorp was my 17th rally speech, but the first time done through a hybrid format. Apart from the small studio audience, some 1,800 attendees joined in through Zoom, with their faces appearing on a massive screen that wrapped around the studio.
In my speech, I spoke about how we are strengthening support for lower wage workers, and addressed concerns over foreign work pass holders. I also touched on race and religion, which is a constant work in progress especially here in Singapore.
COVID-19 will not be our last crisis. But I’m confident Singapore has what it takes to face any trials head on and prevail as one united people. We’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again! 🇸🇬

In my Malay National Day Rally speech last night, I emphasised that education is key to our efforts to build an inclusive society in Singapore. And that we need to pay extra attention to students who are falling behind.
I used the story of Siti (not her real name), a polytechnic graduate, and her siblings to illustrate how students like her have been able to do well in school, with help from many Government agencies and community partners who come together to support both disadvantaged students and their families.
Every Singaporean, regardless of background, deserves the chance to succeed. By helping those who are struggling, we make meritocracy work for all of us and enable everyone to progress together as one nation.

While only 7km tall and at its bikini line 500m wide, tiny Boracay is the Philippines' top tourist draw, fuelled by explosive growth and a tsunami of hype. The influx of visitors caused the Philippines government to temporarily close Boracay to tourists for six months. This 'rehabilitation' period, was used to restore the island to its former glory and it has since reopened with a limit on the number of daily visitors. #Shorts
