【給搭配詞課程學生的一封信】Greetings from 王梓沅老師
親愛的同學們：
上完了搭配詞課後，有記得溫習，提高在聽英文、看英文的時後的學習意識嗎？
還記得 disposable utensils (免洗餐具)、complimentary services (免費服務)、brick-and-mortar stores (實體店面) 這些用法嗎？
還記得 solid 和 rock 所代表的，常常一個屬正向一個屬負向嗎？ (a solid foundation, rocky experience, rock bottom)
還記 flat 所能代表的，除了「起水沒氣」、經濟成長「無起色」、還有笑話很冷嗎 (a joke falls flat)？
如果忘記了話，記得要趕快複習嘿。
英文要學好，有一大塊跟「詞彙」的使用有關係。前陣子在跟 Columbia Univ. 研究所念書時的一位教授聊天時，我們特別聊到了「文法和詞彙」緊密相連這件事 (Vocabulary and grammar are closely intertwined)。在「改變一生搭配詞課」當中所學習的很多「觀念」和「用法」全部如果都學懂了，其實只確保了我們學好一部分。
另一半要來自我們對於「詞彙」的認識。
例如，對於 suggestion (n.) 這個字，在搭配詞上，我們可以使用 come up with / put forward a suggestion 如此的建議，但還是有可能使用出錯誤的英文句子像是
She suggested me to go see Dr. Lin. (源自於對 suggest 怎麼用的不了解)
例如，對於 assistance (協助）這個字的搭配詞認識，讓我們能夠使用出來 turn to Sandy for assistance (向 Sandy 求助)、 “Feel free to let us know if we can be of any assistance to you” (若我們有能夠協助您的地方，請跟我們說) ，但還是可能使用出錯誤的英文句子像是
“Thank you for assisting us *to finish the project.” (源自於對assist 怎麼用的不了解)
但這些其實都是英語母語人士「每一天」都會用到的單字群。
所以在繼全方位口說課的半年後，我又要推出新課「改變一生 核心字彙語法」班囉 我們用 8 堂課 (每堂 3 hours) ，配合「時事雜誌閱讀」將大家在學習英文上，「詞彙語法」上面的洞，一次補起來。
例如，我們會探討，像是台灣學生常用但是用常用錯的詞彙間的差異。以下面 6 組為例。
“ability / capacity / capability” “reject / refuse” “ruin / destroy” “succeed in / succeed to”
“progress / progression” “facilities / equipment / device / tool”
除此之外，我們也會在新聞、報章雜誌上母語人士常用的「短語搭配」上面的用法做強化訓練。例如，be conducive to (有助於)、deviate from (背離、偏離)、supplement with (補償、完善)、pass into oblivion (逐漸被遺忘) 等等。

但我不是很喜歡就是了

Oblivion n. 徹徹底底的忘記（強度強forget非常多）
這兩個組合起來真的有點難解釋啊（嘆）
參考網路上一堆怪怪字典的解釋
我決定翻成「付諸遺忘」
比較有那種味道（這首歌有點文言）
當然這是我個人的感覺
所以翻出來可能不太到位或有曲解的還請不吝指教
這首歌有很濃的馬雅文明色彩（但我不熟...）
主要是說人要反璞歸真不要被物慾限制自我
類似道家思想
但又強調相由心生
如同慧能謁所言「本來無ㄧ物，何處惹塵埃？」
假的 都是假的！
僅需依循自然之道行事
這跟中國古代思想有異曲同工之妙
（剛剛腦袋打結解釋成天命靡常抱歉...）
當然這都是個人感覺啦

我們是如此的懼怕，懼怕所有未知的事物

我們必須姑息於貪婪淫慾
（get laid=have sex 婉曲用法）

沒有什麼關係的，就這樣享用我們的獵物

我們大方的行動總是來的太晚（我翻不太出來...）
