Tattoo No.5 : The Larkspur symbolizes good luck, laughter and lightness; this is also the July birth flower. In general, larkspurs denote love, affection, and ardent attachment.

These flowers are also associated with the Virgin Mary, and denote Her tears. According to a Native American folklore, the credit for creating larkspur flowers goes to a celestial figure who was curious about the Earth. The celestial figure tore open the evening sky, and used a piece of the sky to create a spike so that she could climb down to the Earth. The spike had small blue pieces of sky attached to it. The sun dried out the spike, which disintegrated into small pieces that were scattered on the Earth. Larkspur flowers originated from these pieces.

Throughout history, many believed larkspur held mystical qualities thanks to its strong fragrance. For centuries, it was used to ward off evil and magic. One of the most ancient of these revolved around spreading larkspur petals around homes to ward off scorpions, which were associated with death and devilry. Another in Transylvania had citizens hanging larkspur in barns to frighten witches away.

Q: Did you ever encounter any fashion/self-expression barriers in medicine?
A: I really thought I would. I held off on dyeing my hair purple until after my Wayne interview since I didn’t want to risk anything, but now that I’m here I haven’t encountered any issues in school or in clinic. Same thing with tattoos. I got a pretty large back piece done last winter in Saint Petersburg and kept it under the “t-shirt line”. I also have a ribcage tattoo and a small wrist one that I cover with a watch. However, things are changing, and people are becoming a lot more accepting about things that were previously taboo. There are definitely some fashion stereotypes in medicine, but it seems like this upcoming generation of doctors will break them.
