│Paramount 耗費破紀錄的10億美元確保《South Park 南方四賤客》成為自家串流台柱而不會投敵│

• Reese Witherspoon 的製作公司 Hello Sunshine 在串流大戰的併購潮中獲得9億美元身價看來只是第一步，上週好萊塢還爆出另外一紙交易金額超過9億的好萊塢合約：ViacomCBS 以9億美元的合約與《South Park 南方四賤客》的 South Park Studio 和兩位創辦人 Trey Parker 和 Matt Stone 續約，該製作公司還將專門為 ViacomCBS 的串流平台 Paramount+ 製作14部《南方四賤客》動畫電影。然而這9億美元並不含動畫影集和電影的製作費，所以彭博新聞預估 ViacomCBS 這一紙合約總計要用掉白花花的10億美元，遠超過 Netflix 先前與《American Horror Story 美國恐怖故事》製作人 Ryan Murphy 的3億美元合約。《南方四賤客》兩位原創者 Trey Parker 和 Matt Stone 因而擠身成為電視史上最成功的創作者之二。

• 不過才一週前，ViacomCBS 旗下的 CBS 才與 Star Trek 宇宙的總舵手 Alex Kurtzman 簽下9位數新合約。Paramount+ 上路半年以來一直被貼上 Star Trek 頻道的暱稱，然而今天突然出現局勢變化。這一紙 South Park Studio 簽訂的天文數字合約儼然有一種改朝換代的味道，要讓長期在別人的串流平台播出的《南方四賤客》開始準備當家作主成為 Paramount+ 的招牌節目。

• 彭博新聞今天刊出的 Matt Stone 提供了不少 ViacomCBS 大動作續約的內情：這對創作組合在完全沒有人看好網際網路的年代，就在律師堅持下要求保有《南方四賤客》電視以外的所有權利的50%。2019年 WarnerMedia 以5億美元簽走《南方四賤客》的美國地區串流授權（上架至 WarnerMedia 的 HBO Max 服務）時，兩人就因為這個條款合計拿下近半數授權費。雖然 ViacomCBS 也分得另一半的授權費，但對 ViacomCBS 來說最大的惡夢是 HBO Max 可能在嘗到甜頭之後進一步直接委託 South Park Studio 製作其他衍生內容或是獨立於《南方四賤客》以外的內容，甚至是直接出資買下該公司 。

• 不尋常的是 ViacomCBS 沒有選擇像 Amazon 買下製作和發行龐德電影的 MGM 那樣，直接買下 South Park Studio 。Matt Stone 說他也不知道為什麼 ViacomCBS 選擇簽訂天文數字的合約協議而非出價直接併購他們的公司。他也說自己還沒有打算脫離《南方四賤客》這個節目，但也許真有一天會出售自己手上的相關股份。

• 《南方四賤客》不是 ViacomCBS 唯一出售串流權利給別人播出的自家節目，廣受歡迎的 《Yellowstone 黃石公園》現在在 Peacock 上。甚至連整個 Paramount + 最大招牌 Star Trek 宇宙的多部電影也在近日下架，不知道賣到哪一家平台上打工去。在決定傾整個集團之力投入串流競爭之前，ViacomCBS 就像現在的 Sony Pictures 一樣，樂得賺串流財。不只大量授權節目給其他串流，甚至還成立串流製作部門專門替串流業者拍片。許多 VIacomCBS 節目串流授權合約早在 Paramount+ 開台之前就已經簽訂，這也使得 ViacomCBS 對於串流的緩慢行動付出了慘痛的代價。如果《南方四賤客》的 HBO Max 合約發生在現在，ViacomCBS 肯定會極力阻止這個重量級文化現象成為別人家品牌的一部份。

• Observer 提供的表格顯示 ViacomCBS 的節目去別人家別的串流平台打工的表現非常突出：Peacock 上最受歡迎的節目中來自 ViacomCBS 授權的佔比高達 27.7%，在 Netflix 上有 25.6%，在 Amazon Prime Video 上也有24.8%。這些數據顯示，ViacomCBS 的節目大賺串流財的同時也在養大 Paramount+ 的敵人，並將這些敵手與起步更晚的 Paramount+ 的距離越拉越遠。

走進「香港平面設計之父」的圖語世界。

自六十年代初落戶香港，石漢瑞（Henry Steiner）整整二十年都住在西營盤一所酒店裡（文末為Steiner親自撰寫的英文原文《Home away from home》）。像他這樣一個沒有「nesting DNA」的無根者，卻在近半世紀，用上各種符號語言建構出這個看得到的「家」－滙豐銀行、香港置地和牛奶公司等商標，俯首抬頭，總會遇上他的作品，這些形狀、顏色和文字設計迥異的商標，沉默地訴說設計者的情感與品牌概念，也塑造出在香港邁向現代化城市進程中的獨有視覺景觀。

最廣為人所知的，也許是滙豐的六角形logo。本身亦是設計師的收藏家John Wu笑說，剛入行時，前輩解釋「兩個箭咀向入，兩個箭咀向出」，代表金錢有出有入；多年後John聽到石漢瑞親身解話，原來只屬民間猜測。翻查當年剪報，實際用途是為了突出以往一直沿用「聖安德烈十字」符號中的「x」型，暗示與蘇格蘭的淵源；另一方面，則是幾何美學的考量，原意以兩條對角線畫出兩個三角形，取紅、白兩色，但為了顯現白色三角形，於是把紅色三角形加在外邊。設計言簡意駭，取代了1983年前極富殖民地色彩的「盾形紋章」，是品牌邁向現代化的大躍進。

即使是異鄉人，石漢瑞對東方文化理解得透切又貼地－在1978年設計渣打銀行的鈔票時，摒棄政治和歷史人物，採用中國神獸做代表，而他的最愛，竟是印著錦鯉的「10蚊紙」，因為「鯉躍龍門，升價十倍」；而另一張150年周年的渣打鈔票，以日本人看富士山的浮世繪作靈感，呈現幾代香港人看維港，賞心悅目，又不失人文情味。

《Home away from Home》- Henry Steiner

Twenty years ago, I moved into a medium sized hotel West of Central. I have lived there since.

Until then, since arriving in Hong Kong in 1961 I had lived in apartments. For various reasons the move to the hotel made sense as a temporary pied a terre. But as I kept extending my stay, I realized how well the hotel suited me.

It’s located a short drive, by taxi or mini bus, from my office. It’s also close to the MTR station and around the corner from the tram stop. (Trams are one of my favorite things in Hong Kong.)

Mornings, I can leave my hotel room in an untidy state and by evening the elves have sorted it out, as if for the next guest.

Most weekend mornings I descend to the restaurant and its buffet breakfast. As appropriate, the lobby is a convenient meeting point.

I don’t seem to have the ‘nesting’ DNA which would make me want my own idiosyncratic space and which would reflect me and my tastes. (Of course, my office is the real home, library, workshop and communication centre.)

The hotel is a place to sleep and a rendezvous with friends as appropriate; a compact, efficient space, where I can come and go as I please.

One might make the argument that this comfortable, effortless way to reside could be the way more people will live the future. For what it’s worth, I can recommend it.

And after twenty years living in the charming, down to earth Sai Ying Pun neighborhood I’m happy to say: so far, so good.

Question: What is your job?
Response: My job is a full-time English teacher. I work as an English private tutor. I offer Internet...I offer language lessons both over the Internet as well as in person.

Question: Where do you work?
Response: I work mostly in my office, which is in Mongkok, an area in Hong Kong. At the same time I also go out to shoot videos of me speaking in English outside and anywhere, basically.

Question: Why did you choose this job?
Response: I choose (chose) this job because I really love English. I love speaking it. I love using it. And I love learning it as well as a learner. So that’s why I’ve chosen this job.

Question: Is it a popular job in your country?
Response: I wouldn’t say it’s very popular with locals, but I might say it could be popular with foreigners, expats and native speakers.

Question: Do you get on well with your colleagues?
Response: I don’t have many colleagues but when I have them, I get along okay with them. I get along alright with them, I would say.

Question: What responsibilities do you have at work?
Response: Sometimes I have to mark my students’ assignments. Somtimes I have to shoot videos of me to promote my busness, which is a teaching, a language teaching, tutoring business. At the same time I have to spend most of my time in a day to give lessons.

Question: Do you plan to continue to continue this job in the future?
Response: I do, as a matter of fact. I do plan to continue my teaching career in the future.
