MERDEKA?

I think it's a lot better to say, "Selamat Hari Kebangsaan" rather than "Selamat Hari Merdeka". Merdeka connotes a freedom, and we're not really free, are we? I still think Malaysia is a great country, and I'm very thankful to be a part of it. But I do not delude myself into thinking that any of us living here are truly free.

I think most of us are still very frightened to speak out against the myriad injustices that occur right before our eyes, every day.

To add, there is a culture of divisiveness amongst the races in this country that nobody wants to address. The worst thing about it all, is that the education system we currently have, fosters it.

In 2021, when advanced societies are denouncing notions like 'superior race' and 'the right (religious) way of life', our political parties inch closer to primitive dogma, and those opposing it can't say anything against it, because it's all cloaked under that big untouchable subject called "religion".

What is wrong with us? Where is our voice? We can't simply acquiesce, just because somebody said, "God mandated it." Over history, God has mandated A LOT of reprehensible acts. Once upon a time, that same God even mandated owning slaves. Atrocities like the Holocaust, the Spanish Inquisition and mistreatment and displacement of the Rohingyas were all committed in the name of God.

People should not be afraid to raise their voices and question the authorities, when their rights are being trampled on. More importantly, they should feel compelled to raise their voices against the authorities, when the rights of others are being trespassed on. It is so crucial for us to speak up for them, because these people, these 'others'... they may not have a voice to stand up for themselves.

When we are free to do that, THAT'S when we can say we have attained freedom. That is when we are merdeka.

So until we achieve that, I will wish you Selamat Hari Kebangsaan instead.💜

I am Filipino. My father’s paternal lineage is Chinese, and my mother’s maternal ancestry is Spanish.

Growing up, my grandfather used to make fun of my nose, saying that it was flat and ugly. This kind of thinking pervaded my concept of beauty.

I wonder how many other Filipino women thought that they were less beautiful because of the shape of their noses or the colour of their skin.

Thankfully, we now live in a society where our diversity is celebrated— and as a consequence, there’s a resurgence of pride in our own heritage, our stories, and now even the physical traits characteristic of our various races.

Our generation is rectifying outdated misconceptions on beauty, and acknowledging that not one race is more beautiful than the other. And as the world becomes more interconnected, the lines that divide become thinner and weaker. The values that bind become stronger and more defined.

This caged-unpaid-freedom is getting boring not to mention the insignificant hypocrites who are far worse than any pandemic virus combined.
Honestly, I don’t blame Corona virus but damn! She’s a crowned bitch! who suddenly created a sudden nirvana where starvation collides with struggling flames of lust for life. C, I salut you! But in the end of the day, this little inevitably act of nature, don’t think it was approved by our mother nature though but surely caused by some jealous little bitch life form who want to conquer little planet earth.
However, I love this retro* social distance act (*see Spanish flu) it helps me erasing those who mean nothing in my life. And I LOVEEE this “New idiot, oh sorry, new normal” era. How thoughtful of you lot! Wow!
However, it’s time for me to do something to be able to survive for my body and especially for my dying soul and passion. As one of a singer/song-writer/performer in a country mentality stuck in 1920s (how classy! Not! 555)
This evening, for the first time in my life that I will make another dream come true by busking the streets of Charoen Nakorn with a mic and a boom box. If that against the law arrest me! Take everything, take my dignity and pride but don’t you dare take my Chanel watch! Coz that’s my last asset in this ma material world we have to live in.
Come support a struggling artist, but don’t come too close, yes keep your distance at all times. Duh!

「恐れ」

私の人生の多くの場面で、私は恐れを感じました。

先生に怒られたとき、
学校で私のセクシュアリティをバカにされたとき、

そして
ニューヨークに引っ越そうと決めたとき、
僧侶の修行に入ろうと決めたとき、
自分のセクシュアリティを公にカミングアウトしようと決意したとき、

でも恐れることは悪いことだと思いますか？

私が日常とは違うことをしたり、慣れ親しんだ環境から抜け出そうとするとき、恐れは私を引き止めるでしょう。
でも、その恐れこそが私を進歩させて、私の人生を変えてくれるのです。

恐れることは自然のことです。

輝いている星に例えます。
今輝いているその星も、誕生するときには、エネルギーが変化して化学反応が起こったはずです。

人も「恐れ」というエネルギーの変化を乗り越えることで、後に星と同じように世界を照らすこともできると思います。

私はあなたの勇気を応援します。
そしてあなたの輝く未来を願っています。
