Last year, the world's most valuable company Microsoft announced its plans to establish a US$ 34 million AI R&D hub in Taiwan, which will look to employ 200 engineers over the next 5 years.
This is on top of the fact that Taiwan has for the last 3 years been serving as the firm's Asian hub for IoT development.
Unbeknownst to most, Microsoft is actually among a handful of other global tech giants including Google, Amazon, and IBM that have earmarked Taiwan as a strategic center for innovation, particularly as it relates to the development of AI, blockchain, and IoT.
The reasons are quite simple. The country's developed infrastructure, low-cost standards of living, and rigorous emphasis on STEM education has cultivated a robust and cost-effective pool of raw engineering talent, enabling firms to fuel the exploration of deep technologies.
Taiwan’s legacy as a leading OEM/ODM for the world’s leading consumer electronics brands also allows global innovators to capitalize on the growing applications of AI in IoT, Industry 4.0, and smart cities.
It's clear that Taiwan can't continue to compete against low-cost manufacturing hubs in China, Vietnam, or India where scale and price reign king. But, using the expansion of these American tech giants as a proxy, it seems Taiwan is just starting to make a name for itself when it comes to high-tech innovation.
