十八世紀，在波蘭立陶宛聯邦分裂後，
俄羅斯帝國、普魯士王國與奧地利哈布斯堡君主國侵略並劃分波蘭領土，
此後波蘭在歐洲地圖上消失了一百二十三年之久。
然而，即使遭佔領超過一世紀，數百萬波蘭人的愛國心也沒有因此消失。
1918年11月11日，波蘭王國的攝政委員會－－取代入侵者，由三人組成的波蘭政府－－任命約瑟夫·畢蘇斯基為總司令，畢蘇斯基撤除了華沙的德國駐軍。
同一天，新選出的社會民主黨德國政府接受了由協約國提出的康邊停戰協定，正式終結了第一次世界大戰。
雖然從1926年起11月11日就是國慶日，但一直到1937年4月23日，它才被正式訂為獨立日。
1989年重新被命名為波蘭獨立紀念日以來，每年，世界各地的波蘭人都會盛大慶祝這個日子。
After partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 18th century, conducted by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and Habsburg Austria, which divided Polish lands in the process of territorial seizures, Poland disappeared from the maps of Europe for as long as 123 years! Yet, our patriotic spirit could not have been erased from the hearts of millions of people, who survived, for more than a century in an occupants-created reality.
It was on 11th November 1918, that the Regency Council of the Kingdom of Poland-the Polish government consisting of three people as the replacement of deposed invaders -ceded power over the Army to Józef Piłsudski. The same day, newly elected social-democratic German government agreed to Armistice of Compiègne between the Allies and Germany, which officially ended the First World War. That day, Polish people in Warsaw disarmed the Prussian military garrison and invading soldiers patrolling streets of the city.
Even though 11 November was a national holiday for the government administration since 1926, it was on 23 April 1937 when it was officially recognized as The Independence Day. The holiday is celebrated regularly since 1989, when it was renamed as The National Independence Day.
