Telling children that it’s OK to be sad.

In the recent trainings and courses I’ve attended, we’ve been in discussion about the role we adults play in nurturing emotionally mature children.

In fact, we were asked, “If you were feeling really sad about something, what would you prefer— for someone to say, ‘That’s nothing, don’t feel bad,’ or someone who will say, ‘I can understand how sad you are. Let it out, then we’ll get through this together’?” Since that time, I’ve made a conscious effort in acknowledging the feelings of children, rather than telling them how I think they should feel.

When we acknowledge children’s feelings, we allow them to be honest with themselves, which in turns helps them have a clearer understanding of their emotions (EQ). Sometimes, we want to take their pain away by saying “Don’t cry! You’re okay!” but if we instead allow them to accept their feelings constructively, they will learn to address their own problems and build resilience in the process.

It is never too early to encourage children to cope with #emotions. This will go a long way in their life journey. I am glad that the amazing artist @leonlollipop agrees. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to create a little #singalong book with him, #GiraffeandtheRain, and be able to share these values with children and their families.

Okay, amidst all happenings, artist LeonLollipop 黎里昂 and I decided to do a crossover project. Leon is an accomplished and exceptionally creative local artist who focuses on oil and acrylic paintings, but for this project, he’s doing something a bit different!

On the other hand, I’m always on the look out for simple stories for really young children, and I’ve always felt passionate about the use of music to aid learning— for parents, teachers and children alike.

The result? A book that captures the values we want to share with families, colourful illustrations enticing for little eyes, and words that are simple enough to follow for young learners— or adults learning to read aloud to their children! We didn’t have any “grand plan” except to do what we love, and share it with you. We hope you like it, as much as we enjoyed creating it.
