The Brazilian Supreme Court this week took up a case that could define new rules for setting the boundaries of Indigenous lands, effectively eliminating the period of time that guarantees the right to land for all Indigenous peoples. More than 6,000 Indigenous people from more than 170 ethnic groups camped in front of the Supreme Court to follow the trial. All of this while other laws are aimed at opening up Indigenous territories to extractive industry.
Last week, Indigenous peoples symbolically demarcated the plaza outside of the court building, Praça dos Três Poderes. “521 years in Brazil, 32 years of the constitution, and we continue to witness the neglect of the most basic rights of the Indigenous peoples,” said APIB - Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil in a statement to Re:wild. “How long will this equation continue to take away the rights, lands and lives of #IPovosIndígenas? We call for an end to the impunity!”

Today, on #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I am sharing a very powerful letter by TIME 100 honoree & Indigenous leader Nemonte Nenquimo.
🌿 Nemonte’s message reminds us to listen to Indigenous peoples and their solutions so we can restore a healthy planet and find balance in our relationship to nature. Her fierce commitment to saving the Amazon and building a movement to confront the industries and systems responsible for deforestation and climate change is exactly the kind of leadership the world needs right now.

Edit: Her apology shows that she missed the point of the outrage entirely: https://www.nst.com.my/…/5974…/im-sorry-i-know-youre-hurting
She still thinks that Black Lives Matter is only about personal hurt. 🙄🙄
Samantha Katie James is an embarrassment to our country.
The tone deaf comments and responses to Black Lives Matter shows a lack of understanding of the world at large. "Miss Universe Malaysia"? More like "Miss Privileged Katak Bawah Tempurung".
Malaysia's racism and your racism experience is nowhere near the level that Black people face on a daily basis.
And saying that "we ok only" and pinning the outrage on Netflix is the ultimate mark of your blindness to both global politics and local race politics.
We were never ok.
We were silent. We were complicit.
We are forced into "toleransi" while politicians can openly wave kerises and say Chinese/Indians are "pendatang".
We are forced into "harmoni" while racist Chinese messages spread on social media during Covid-19 lockdown measures telling Chinese to boycott Muslim-owned businesses and only shop at non-halal sections because "Malays are spreading the disease".
We are forced into "multicultural" while our government intrudes into our indigenous peoples' lands and stealing ancestral land for farming and logging (because you're only eligible for bumiputera rights to own land if you're part of the Malay Muslim oligarchy of politically connected families and individuals, apparently).
We are told about how this land is accepting of all races while we mock and spit and curse at refugees like Rohingya and immigrants like Indonesian/Bangladeshi/Nepalese etc. foreign workers, yet at the same time welcome white people as "expatriates".
We say our country is beautiful while too many people here worship Hitler n Nazi Germany, calling it "strong leadership", and indulge in casual anti-Semitism like saying expensive things have "harga Yahudi", and can even make Nazi salutes at graduation ceremonies.
You've failed both at looking at the world and at Malaysia.
Edit to add: Heck why gain so much traction 🤣 anyway a few things:
1) if you #AllLivesMatter at me you'll get blocked/comments deleted. If you wanna know why you can look at this: https://chainsawsuit.com/…/all-houses-matter-the-extended-…/ Black Lives Matter RIGHT NOW, Black Lives under threat RIGHT NOW, this is why an uprising is happening.
2) Muslim and Chinese and Indian and Refugee lives matter but this isn't the point of this post or this hashtag, I can multitask about multiple concerns but this post BLM is the focus, don't out of topic pls
3) It's Pride Month, if you use transphobic insults like "ah gua" and "looks like man" etc you'll get blocked n comments deleted also #CampurLGBT
4) Sorry, I filter my friends lists and who I accept as friends, this is a personal account so I don't simply accept random friends request unless I know you.
5) Wash your hands, wear mask, practice social distancing, look out for each other
6) Change dot Org petitions are useless sorry, please write to your representatives, donate to organisations that need funding, that works better
