Live by the “Present Truth”
“Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth...For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” We heard this voice come out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.” (2 Peter 1:12, 16-18 WEB)
The apostle Peter wrote to the church, saying that they were “established in the present truth”.
The existence of a present truth necessitates that there was a former truth.
I believe that he was referring to the change in covenants, from the Old Covenant of the Law (former truth) to the New Covenant of Grace (present truth).
He was probably addressing those who disbelieved that the Law has been replaced by Grace, and who wanted to continue keeping the Ten Commandments.
The New Covenant of Grace is all about God’s Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Peter then recounted an incident that happened to him many years ago, when he saw Jesus transfigured on the mountain.
“After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light. Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him. Peter answered, and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let’s make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid. Jesus came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.” Lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”” (Matthew 17:1-9 WEB)
The transfiguration was firmly etched in Peter’s mind. He saw Jesus’ majesty—the glory He had before His incarnation.
But right after seeing that, he was starstruck when he saw Moses and Elijah who appeared and spoke with Jesus.
Moses is the mediator of the Old Covenant of the Law, while Elijah is one of the most highly esteemed Old Testament prophets.
He stumbled over these two great men of God, and put Jesus on the same level as them by asking if he should pitch three tents for them to stay in.
God the Father was displeased by this, and He overshadowed Jesus, Moses and Elijah with a bright cloud, and told Peter, James, and John to listen to Jesus only.
Moses and Elijah disappeared, and the apostles only saw Jesus alone.
This is the way God the Father intended—for His Son to receive all the glory, honor, and majesty.
Under the New Covenant of Grace, the “present truth” is that we listen to Jesus alone.
It is not about keeping the Ten Commandments or observing the ominous warnings of the prophets anymore. Don’t be deceived by “cunningly devised fables” invented by the minds of men who seek to use the Law to enforce behavior modification on ignorant believers.
The entire Bible is about Jesus and the revelation of His story.
“Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27 WEB)
Notice how Jesus expounded the Scriptures to Cleopas and the other disciples on the road to Emmaus, by explaining to them the things concerning Himself. Moses refers to the first five books of the Old Testament which were written by Moses, and the prophets are represented by Elijah.
Both Moses and Elijah are pointing to Jesus Christ who would be born as a Man to redeem mankind from their sins by dying on the cross, and eventually, Jesus will return to reign on David’s throne as the eternal King of Israel!
Did you ever wonder why Jesus only brought Peter, James and John to the mountain? I believe they were chosen because of their names.
Peter means “stone”, representing the Law which was engraved on stone tablets. James means “to supplant” (to be replaced). John means “grace of God”.
Putting their names together, we derive this meaning: the Law has been replaced by Grace.
The Law is the former truth, while Grace is the present truth which we are to be established in. We need to be constantly reminded of this truth so that we can keep our eyes on Jesus. Like Abba God said from the bright cloud, “Listen to Him.”
“For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17 WEB)
No matter what challenges you are facing today, choose to keep your eyes on Jesus, and let His Spirit lead you. Jesus is the full realization of grace and truth. He is God’s righteousness. We must stop mixing the covenants and live by Grace alone!

The Name “Wonderful”
“Then Manoah said to the Angel of the LORD, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?” And the Angel of the LORD said to him, “Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?”” (Judges 13:17-18 NKJV)
Yahweh took the form of an angel, appeared to Manoah and revealed His name as “Wonderful”.
The prophet Isaiah prophesied that “Wonderful” would be born to mankind. As a Man He was born and as a Son of God, He was given to us.
“For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David’s throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7 WEB)
This child “Wonderful” is destined to rule on David’s throne forever. He has been given the authority already, but then fulfillment of it will be in the future.
The following passage almost mirrors the one above. It reveals the name of the child who is called “Wonderful”.
“Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”” (Luke 1:31-33 WEB)
His name is “Jesus”. In the original Hebrew, “Yeshuah”.
Now we know who “Wonderful” is. This word in the Hebrew, “pele” has the meaning of miraculous signs and wonders too. Miracles happen in Jesus’ name.
He is also Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.
Counselor: through His Spirit, Jesus is our parakletos (in Greek), the one who is close enough to our situation to make a judgment call.
He helps us in all situations in our life, and is our defense lawyer when the devil tries to accuse us based on false evidence.
Mighty God: Jesus is God. He is not just a Man—He is both God and Man.
Everlasting Father: As Creator of all things, Jesus is our Father—He made us. As Man, He is our Bridegroom. As God, He is our Father.
Prince of Peace: Peace is what characterizes Jesus’ kingdom. He is not the author of chaos or confusion. Wherever Jesus’ reign is established, there is peace—wholeness, love, health, freedom and no lack in any way.
This Christmas, as we remember Jesus’ birth, let’s not stop there. His birth as a Man showed His commitment to save us, but it was His death that actually saved us.
Through faith in Him, He has become Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace to us!

The Deep Revelations of Melchizedek
“Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation, named by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. About him we have many words to say, and hard to interpret, seeing you have become dull of hearing. For although by this time you should be teachers, you again need to have someone teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the revelations of God. You have come to need milk, and not solid food. For everyone who lives on milk is not experienced in the word of righteousness, for he is a baby. But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:9-14 WEB)
There are revelations about Melchizedek that spiritually immature believers aren’t ready to accept nor understanding because they aren’t established in the basic Gospel truth about how righteousness comes about: by faith in Jesus and His finished work at the cross, not by the works of the Law.
For those who are ready to receive, consider this passage:
“For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham divided a tenth part of all (being first, by interpretation, “king of righteousness”, and then also “king of Salem”, which means “king of peace”; without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God), remains a priest continually. Now consider how great this man was, to whom even Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the best plunder. They indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brothers, though these have come out of the body of Abraham, but he whose genealogy is not counted from them has accepted tithes from Abraham, and has blessed him who has the promises. But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater. Here people who die receive tithes, but there one receives tithes of whom it is testified that he lives.” (Hebrews 7:1-8 WEB)
The author is about to reveal the deep revelations about Melchizedek that only spiritually mature Christians can accept and understand.
The name Melchizedek in Hebrew means “king of righteousness”.
He is also the king of Salem (the old name for Jerusalem) which means peace (shalom) in Hebrew.
Who is this mysterious priest to God that was appointed before the Old Covenant of the Law was even given?
He is without parents or genealogy, meaning he wasn’t born—he’s not human.
He has no beginning of days or end of life meaning he is an eternal being who wasn’t created and cannot die—in other words, he is God. Even angels are created beings.
Melchizedek blessed Abraham—he didn’t curse Abraham or impose any laws on him.
We learn that Melchizedek’s priesthood is about righteousness, peace and blessing.
Melchizedek remains a priest continually—an unbroken, unending priesthood.
The author seems to be leading the recipients of this letter to conclude themselves that Melchizedek is Yahweh—the eternal Word of God and pre-incarnate Christ.
Therefore Melchizedek is not a name, but one of Yahweh’s titles that tells us about Himself.
Note that Jesus will be the King of Jerusalem in the Millennium, as well as in the eternal city of New Jerusalem, so He is the eternal King of Salem.
Abraham seems to have had a revelation that Melchizedek is the eternal God, therefore recognizing Him, he gave a tithe to Melchizedek as an act of worship.
Abraham tithed long before the Law was ever given, so he tithed voluntarily out of having a revelation, not because he was forced or threatened with a curse.
In contrast, the Levitical priesthood made up of mortal men collected tithes from Israel because of the commandment of the Law.
It is greater to tithe voluntarily out of faith rather than to tithe under compulsion out of duty.
Aside from this, Melchizedek came to Abraham with bread and wine—a picture of the Lord’s Supper.
“Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine: and he was priest of God Most High. He blessed him, and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth: and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Abram gave him a tenth of all.” (Genesis 14:18-20 WEB)
The deep revelations of Melchizedek are this:
1. Jesus is Melchizedek. He is always the high priest to God—before His incarnation, after His incarnation and forever.
2. Tithing is an act of worship to declare that Jesus is great. It also proclaims His resurrection from the dead—that He is alive forevermore. Tithing is the way of receiving God’s blessing of provision.
3. The Lord’s Supper is a meal of blessing that proclaims Jesus’ death at the cross. The Lord’s Supper is the way of receiving God’s blessing of health and healing.
