I always feel hesitant to post videos like this. But I have learned that we cannot control what people say or think about us, but what we can control is what we do. And I choose to share this inspiring experience I have had yesterday.
A few weeks, ago, I was at Pugon Bakeshop eating my favourite Super Lugaw, as you already know how much of a fan I am. And then, I remembered a campaign on TikTok which was #LugawIsEssential. I asked the owner (he is very private so I am not gonna name him) if they have had a feeding program. At this point, I already know what they do for the community. He replied that they actually have a feeding program where some business owners in Boracay come together to feed the locals.
I got excited to have known this because I have been wanting to film moments like this- not influenced by other people, but just me doing it because I love doing it. And so I asked them to invite me next time so I could capture it. They agreed.
I honestly had no idea how fascinating it was until I experience it. Yesterday, I came along with the guys, we got lost, but we arrived with so many kids waiting for us with their bowls and glasses. The entire time, I was hiding my emotion. I get so emotional when I see things like this on social media and the impact of seeing and experiencing it in person is quite bizarre- in a great way.
We were accompanied by Malay Municipal Police Station, a few people who organised the BARANGAYanihan crowd (yes, there's indeed a program like that), and the people from Boracay Community Sharing Group. Surprisingly, I did not know I was with the people from the Community Sharing Group.
Okay, I just realise I am writing too much, so I am going to make my point of this post now.
You see, I have met a lot of people in my life. I have met people who complained about our community all the time and do nothing even they have the influence, power and connections to do so. And we have people who do not talk about the problems in our community, they see it, and instantly do something about it in hiding. Not all heroes wear capes, they said. And it is true.
I have seen the struggles on this beautiful island, and I am blessed and grateful to have been a part of this activity. It restores my belief in humanity- that somehow, even with the lockdowns happening, people doing their best to get by, there are a few good people who hide in the dark and are helping people silently.
And thank you.
To the policemen of Malay Municipal Police Station,
to the people from the Boracay Community Sharing group, and to Pugon Bakeshop/Bar & Cafè and Salaver Clinic - Boracay, thank you for allowing me to experience this inspiring moment. I hope and pray that people from other municipalities and cities would see this video and be inspired by what you do. Please, please, please, I ask you, to continue being the gold standard. Thank you for allowing me to capture it without giving you a heads up.
And for my final note, we do not need to wait for our government to help. We can help one another. If we have a little bit of something to share with our neighbours, it is already a great start. All we need is compassion and little kindness especially during these lockdowns.

Interview with a Founder: Beryl Liu (Co-founder of Matters Lab)
By Norman Chi, Analyst
Beryl Liu is the co-founder and COO of Matters Lab and was previously the Operations Director of Initium Media. An experienced startup operator, Beryl once led the global operations of Aivvy, a music-tech startup which won the innovation award at CES. She was involved in running a Hong Kong-based NGO in Greater China.
1. What early experience shaped who you are?
I am always passionate about the media because it can bring social value to the public, it’s THE thing I value most and deeply rooted in my heart. But I will say other than my passion, the sum of my experiences also is a big part of who I am now.
After graduating from college, I chose to become an editor in Hong Kong's first all-electronic media as my first job. Before starting Matters, I’ve joined several different groups and startups, including one NGO, one silicon valley startup and Initium Media which allows me to step out of my comfort zone, broaden my horizons, know more about new disruptive technologies like blockchain and learn how startups work. All these unique experiences and passion for media shaped who I am now.
2. Who is your role model as a founder?
I will say there are two types of role models I look up to. One is successful and inspiring entrepreneurs, the other is someone who you are close to and can resonate with.
For the first type of role model, there are too many entrepreneurs I look up to. Among these successful stories, one key thing I will particularly be inspired by is how these entrepreneurs find a breakthrough and identify the right path to stand out. Like Stewart Butterfield’s founding journey of Flickr, even though the original online game idea wasn't working, he had the crazy vision and quickly learned and found out the true needs of users: real-time interaction around photos, and then based on the findings, he launched Flickr and turned it into a success. This type of founders are the role models I would especially look up to and want to share the same vision as they do.
But these great entrepreneurs are too far from our life and work, you can’t fully resonate with these entrepreneurs. So my mom became one of the role models I look up to since I can relate to her story more easily even though she’s not a founder. For the past 10 years, she had a relatively weak physical condition and underwent several severe surgeries which often left patients in pain and despair. But she kept fighting and fighting with a positive attitude, dealing with the pain and pressure, and always looked on the bright side, which really inspired me at my darkest moments, this is the kind of story you can always keep in mind and gather momentum from.
3. What is the biggest mistake and takeaway in your founder journey so far?
The entire entrepreneurship is the endless journey of trial and error until you find PMF (Product Market Fit), so before that, don’t rush to do premature scaling with limited resources. We tried to do too many things in 2018 because back at that time we thought we were ready to scale up, but actually we weren't, and we didn’t allocate the resources properly, leading to a bunch of conflicts both internally and externally. It was a costly lesson we learned after these series of poor decisions we made.
As a result, if you figure out you’ve made a bad decision, founders must learn how to set a stop-loss. Admitting and giving up on one decision you made is difficult, but when you admit something is wrong, it helps you to redirect to the right direction and potentially lower future costs. What’s more, it’s the failure that allows you to rethink and reflect on your goals.

Our collective emotional memory (Lee Yee)
I was most humbly quoting British writer Rushdie’s words yesterday “Don’t be dominated by fear, even if you are afraid”, and was asked by someone: how to be afraid but not be dominated by fear?
When I came across this phrase 19 years ago, I vaguely felt that it could be a wake-up call. It was my experience in Hong Kong since June last year that taught me what it truly means by to be afraid yet not be dominated by fear. Most young people at the frontline admitted that they were “very afraid”, but were reluctant to leave their brothers and sisters behind in order to save themselves. As such, the persistence to pursue freedom freed them from being dominated by fear.
Some pro-Beijing media accused me of inciting young people to go to the frontlines, while I am hiding at the back. As more accusations are being thrown around, more fellow comrades also started to believe it, and said on certain media that some “not so young persons” are making these attempts. I never cared how people view me, because how I view myself has always been more important. In a recent interview, I said that when I watched those young people in the frontlines, I was very worried. In my heart I was telling them not to do it, it is too dangerous. Yet I do not say it out loud. I understand that young people can only achieve the feeling of freedom through fighting, to realize that freedom, and only those in the frontlines would truly grasp the meaning of fellow comrades and the special relationships among brothers and sisters. I never wrote any essay giving young people instructions. I’ve only expressed understand and respect afterwards. It is from them that I learned the courage of freedom that is “to be afraid yet not to be dominated by fear”.
A friend, who was taking pictures on the streets, was intercepted by a dirty cop who threatened to arrest her. She yelled at the dirty cop, and left. In private, she told me she was “really afraid”, yet could not help but yell back. This is exactly “don’t be dominated by fear, even if you are afraid”.
This is the emotional experience shared by many Hongkongers since last year. This is a collective emotional memory.
Another memory is “pain”. Raymond Yeung, the teacher who was shot in the right eye by the police’s tear gas last year on June 12, said in a recent interview that he is actually very afraid of pain. “If on that June 12 morning you had told me I would lose an eye if I were to go out…even if you had told me I would be hit by tear gas, I might not have gone out, let alone losing a whole eye.” The endurance of pain is not an innate ability, but something acquired, something that the Hong Kong community has acquired altogether. He said that when people watch clips of police brutality, their hearts ache, but they also know that this is a rite of passage to go through together. As he considered that, he felt like his pain was being shared and distributed. To quote Brian Leung Kai-ping, “what truly connects Hongkongers is pain.”
Those who did not experience physical pain were perhaps all experience emotional pain through the screen. This pain, is our collective memory. To feel pain, one is a true Hongkonger, or else…
In addition, two other strong emotions felt by Hongkongers were anger and disgust. After witnessing fear and pain on media images, the Scared Liar Conference in the following day would bring anger and disgust, not to mention the faces of those Hong Kong Communists and pro-Beijing politicians. Every time I see them on screen, I think of Lu Xun’s words, “If the mask is worn for too long, it grows on the face, to take it off would be digging into the skin, the bones, and the muscles.”
No, they won’t take these masks off themselves. Yet having witnessed the history of the CCP, there are bound to be a chance to prove them wrong and to dig into the skin, the bones, and the muscles. Hongkongers probably wish to witness this moment.
A friend said that he wished to leave Hong Kong not because of the fear and the pain, but the anger and the disgust. I totally get him. Unless one makes it a habit to live under this blanket of lies, otherwise no normal people would find this easy to swallow.
It is logically to leave due to fear of the threats on security, but anger and disgust are not threats. To live, one must slowly let go of these emotions, but definitely not to forget the events that brought such fear and disgust.
Article 29 (5) of the National Security Law: “provoking by unlawful means hatred among Hong Kong residents towards the Central People’s Government or the Government of the Region, which is likely to cause serious consequences.” Hatred, as an emotion, had nothing to do with the crime; yet we know and will remember who and what were “provoking by unlawful means hatred among Hong Kong residents”, which was indeed a behavior of a criminal organization.
Fear, pain, anger, and disgust – Hongkongers’ collective emotional memory since last year.

《Say Something》
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all
And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
And anywhere, I would have followed you
Oh, oh, oh, oh say something, I'm giving up on you

Me Singing Say Something I’m Giving Up On You Cover
Sorry if it’s bad
這歌非常感動
Lyrics
Say something, I'm giving up on you
說些什麼吧…,我在也無法支撐這搖搖欲墜的情感了
I'll be the one, if you want me to
我心甘情願成為你的唯一,只要你希望我這麼做
Anywhere, I would've followed you
不管身處何方,我都會追隨你的步履
Say something, I'm giving up on you
說點什麼吧……,我就要放棄你了…
And I am feeling so small
而我,感覺到自己如此地渺小無力
It was over my head
這一切悲傷都超出我的理解範圍
I know nothing at all
我獨自佇立在漩渦中,迷失了方向
And I will stumble and fall
而我,在一路上跌跌撞撞,摔得狼狽不堪
I'm still learning to love
我還在學習著怎麼去愛一個人
Just starting to crawl
像個初生的嬰孩似地,掙扎著爬行
Say something, I'm giving up on you
說些什麼吧…,我再也無力承受任何失落了
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
我很抱歉,我已經找不到任何辦法攀越你的心牆
