It is summer. It is the time where I usually get sunburned.
Cycling outdoor with friends and summer travels has been a widely missed ritual as it reminds me of my travel to Kenya during the summer a few years ago.
Like the wildlife that migrates to survive, in search of food and better conditions, I feel like we are ready to fight for a better life by getting out of our seats. Sadly, we were told to stay where we are, to be still and stagnant.
In this time of staying still, I watched a lot of movies/series, I read, and I worked at home. I tried new things, I attended lectures online and I worked out. I did social media detoxing, I shopped online, and I painted. Like everyone else, I spent the time doing all kinds of things that I probably would not have done if it were not for the lockdown.
Time keeps passing by. We have survived for more than a year and it feels like forever. This pandemic has hit us real hard, and we might be feeling that we are in the worst now, and every hope of it getting better seems to be crushed by a larger number of cases. However, I promised myself that I will not to be discouraged so easily even during this great challenge.
Not long ago, I found a beautiful purple flower growing silently between the payvers of my backyard. Even in the midst of the heavy rain, it stood gracefully, not giving in to the pressure it was facing. It made me reflect on how impatient I was that I couldn’t stay still even for a moment under pressure.
Perhaps this is the lesson that I must learn during this time of lockdown. I am sure we have learned many more lessons, although we may not have fully realized yet.
So, let’s not lose hope and stay strong Malaysia! 🤜🏼

1) Suck（残念）
=================================
suckは「最悪だ」や「残念だ」、「ひどい」を意味する口語的な表現です。「それはひどいね」や「それは残念だ」など、不幸や災難といった悪い出来事に対して同情を表す時には“That sucks.”がよく使われます。その他、映画やテレビ番組が「面白くない」「つまらない」、質が「悪い」などネガティブな感情を表す時にもsuckを使うことがよくあります。
＜例文＞
Your flight got canceled? That sucks. Are you going to get a refund?
（飛行機がキャンセルになったって？最悪だね。返金はしてもらえるの？）
This movie sucks. I don’t get why everyone’s going crazy over it.
（この映画は面白くない。みんなが夢中になる理由がわからない。）
It sucks that we can’t go to Hawaii this year. Hopefully, we can go next year.
（今年はハワイに行けないなんて残念。来年は行けるといいね。）

2) Beat（〜に勝つ）
=================================
beatは人やチームなど“対戦相手”に「勝つ」ことを表す時に使われます。winも「勝つ」を意味しますが、winは試合で勝つことを表すのに対し、beatは対戦相手に勝つことを表します。今日の会話でサムは“I really wanted to beat Dark Souls.”と言いましたが、これは「Dark Soulというビデオゲームをクリアしたかった」ことを表しています。
＜例文＞
Did the Dodgers beat the Giants last night?
（昨晩、ドジャースはジャイアンツに勝ちましたか？）
She’s too good at ping pong. I can’t beat her.
（彼女は卓球が上手すぎます。彼女には勝てません。）
I’m pretty good at Mario Cart. I don’t think you can beat me.
（僕はマリオカートが得意なんだ。僕には勝てないと思うよ。）

3) Fall asleep（眠りに落ちる）
=================================
意識して眠りにつくのではなく、無意識のうちに眠りに落ちてしまうことをfall asleepと表現します。“He fell asleep.（彼は寝てしまいました）”は起きている状態から眠りに入ることを表し、疲れなどが原因で知らず知らずのうちに寝てしまうニュアンスがあります。
＜例文＞
I fell asleep on the train and missed my stop.
（電車の中で寝てしまい、駅を乗り過ごしてしまいました。）
I always fall asleep during movies. I can’t stay awake.
（私は映画の途中でいつも寝てしまいます。起きていられません。）
I fell asleep while reading my book at the park and got sunburned.
（公園で本を読みながら寝てしまい、日焼けしてしまいました。）

4) Make it through（乗り切る）
=================================
make it throughは困難な状況や辛い時期をなんとか頑張って乗り越えたり、苦労して何かを成し遂げたりすることを指します。また、大きな困難や苦労を乗り越えることに限らず、やりたくないことを最後までやり通したり、つまらないと思うことを何とかやり遂げたりする状況でも使われます。
＜例文＞
I know you will make it through. Just don’t give up.
（あなたはきっと乗り越えられる。とにかく諦めないで。）
Last year was a tough year, but I somehow made it through.
（去年は大変な一年でしたが、何とか乗り切りました。）
I don’t feel good. I hope I can make it through the day.
（体調がよくありません。今日一日を何とか乗り切れるといいのですが。）

5) Chill（ゆっくりとした時間を過ごす）
=================================
chillは、のんびりとリラックスした状態を表す口語表現です。日常会話では誰かと時間を過ごしたり、誰かと遊ぶ意味でも使われますが、クラブやパーティーに行って派手に遊ぶというよりは、カフェや居酒屋で友達と一緒にゆっくりとした時間を過ごすニュアンスになります。この表現は、hang outの代わりに使える口語的な言い回しです。
＜例文＞
What are you up to this weekend? Let’s chill.
（今週末は何してるの？遊ぼうよ。）
I chilled with Patrick yesterday. He’s been busy with work, but he’s doing well.
（昨日、パトリックと遊んだよ。仕事で忙しいみたいだけど、元気そうだったよ。）
We have about an hour to kill. Do you want to chill at Starbucks?
（1時間くらい時間を潰さないといけないから、スタバでゆっくり過ごさない？）
