PART 04 - Traveling around the… table - marvelous exotic food in Tainan
Everybody knows Tainan is famous for unlimited number of snacks, night markets and traditional, special Tainan foods. But, what if somehow you want to take a break from that and want to try something truly exotic? Do you need to go to the airport and fly to another country? Well, that’s an option. But, don’t worry - there’s no need to look for your passport if you’re already in Tainan. Why? Because there are lots of mouth-watering dishes waiting for you right here in Tainan. Together we can explore a few of them. So are you ready?
Option number one: How about some Indian food?
瑪哈印度餐廳Maharaja Indian Restaurant
From time to time I crave some Indian food, and Maharaja is a good option. They have decorations that transports you to an Indian Palace, they play Bollywood music videos in the background and they have a solid menu - from Indian curries, kebabs, naan (Indian bread you can soak in sauces) and also typical drinks (mango lassi, Indian spiced teas. They also have starters, for example samosas - Indian fried dumplings. The food is really good, I got my favorite dishes including: palak paneer - spinach and cottage cheese sauce, chicken tikka masala, yellow masala lamb curry, chicken kebabs and more. All these delicious dishes were nicely washed with a mango lassi - Indian style of yogurt. Gotta admit - I loved it.
Option number two: Are you craving for some good Japanese food? Great - I have an excellent place just for you.
兩斤家廚房1.2KG Kitchen
Roasted beef steak, Pork fillet, Japanese bbq beef, cheese donburi, Japanese fried chicken (the difference between Taiwanese and Japanese style is that the one from Japan is juicier, Taiwanese style is usually crispier). You can also find hot pots and other dishes at 1.2KG. I love all the dishes - especially the steak.. I am usually a bit sceptical before ordering cheese in restaurants in Taiwan, but the bbq cheese donburi was truly delicious - hands down.
Apart from the tasty dishes, the interior of the restaurant is really stylish and the ambiance is great. You can really feel that the owner put lots of effort into it. You can take lots of great shots if you bring your camera along. The decoration is a bit of a fusion between Japanese and European styles. It feels really good :)
Option number three: Would you like to try the most famous south east asian cuisine here in Tainan? Let’s go Thai then!
泰味食足A Taste of Thailand
The place is well decorated and a cute elephant statue welcomes you from the street. I am always happy to eat some Thai food, and this restaurant made me happy as well.
Usually when I go to Thai restaurants I order my favorite meals: stir-fried spicy minced beef, shrimp pancake and green curry. They also have quite a selection of seafood dishes, steamed fish and steamed shrimps. I started with green papaya salad - it’s a healthy crispy dish full of veggies and unripe papaya. Yummy! Apart from that I tried the rest and I must say all were really good - but the spicy minced beef remains my favorite. If you are in Shanhua this restaurant is definitely a place to visit!
How about some dessert?
光芒果子.小旅行 義式冰淇淋Sunny Mango Gelato
Yujing district of Tainan is mostly famous for its mangoes. But there is way more to discover in that area. Apart from the gorgeous views you can also visit Yujing Old Street. One of the highlights of that place is a real gelato shop.
What is gelato? It’s Italian word that means “frozen” but most commonly it’s known as Italian ice cream. The difference between gelato and ice cream is very subtle - basically gelato is more icy and thick, ice cream is more creamy and soft. There is quite a selection of flavors - from classic ones (fruit, chocolate) to very special flavors (Sun Moon Lake tea, Taiwan beer flavor). Also, I believe the flavors change from time to time, so each time you come you can get some surprises. My favorite gelato was passion fruit, mango and sesame. But let’s be honest - everybody likes a different flavor, so the only way to find out which is your favorite is…. going to Sunny Mango Gelato!
Feel free to ask any questions that you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan before or recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

Whenever I go to Tainan and tell my friends they are jealous, In a good way. If Taiwan is a cake, then Tainan is definitely the cherry on top. And sorry, I won’t mention all the beautiful places to visit here. Also - I will skip the fabulous historical part. I will go straight to the point - FOOD!
Recently, I was invited by the Bureau of Economic Development, Tainan City Government and NCKU Research and Development Foundation to a 3-day trip, and visited 20 shops. You can always count on the kindness and hospitality of the Tainan people. But don't worry, If I was invited, my camera was invited too, and that means I did my best to show off those places, and now I will pay back those nice people, and I am going to invite you on the trip too; are you ready?
PART 01 - When in Tainan, eat as the Tainanese do! - A guide to flavorful, popular (and English speaking) places serving Tainan food!
Taiwanese food is just extraordinary. Everybody loves it. No doubt about it. But now, you need to know that Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and because of that - the variety of foods is richer here than anywhere else. So I will introduce a few places around Tainan where you can get local food. So take your chopsticks in the hand and let’s commence our mouth-watering journey around Tainan!
子龍點鴨 (Zi long dian ya)
As a person born and raised in Europe, I am not really used to eating ducks the way they are usually served in Taiwan. I don't really like messing with bones. But here was a great surprise! They prepare meals removing bones. They sell duck with dried noodles or rice, and also have plenty of side dishes, too. The most special one is duck feet with cucumber, which is really good. Another thing is - the restaurant is located in a typical Tainan style neighbourhood near the old street, so after the tasty dishes you can stroll around there for a while.
磨磨茶 (Mo mo cha)
It’s a chic tea house waiting for you in one of the narrow streets downtown in Tainan (walking distance from the train station). The owner showed and let me make my own matcha from dry tea leaves. Usually tea shops are supplied by whole suppliers (importing tea in bulk). However, this is not the case here - the owner’s family has run a tea plantation for 3 generations; you can taste and say - the tea flows through his veins! They serve a whole variety of delicious teas from Taiwan, for instance: high mountain green tea, oolong tea, tea with fruit juice, milk tea, and more.
The place has stunning interiors that are simple, but you can feel a Taiwanese coziness inside. Momocha is a great place to sit and relax, read a book. Just enjoy your gourmet teas and let time stop for a while.
Apart from the teas and drink you can also find here food, such as Gua Bao. If you speak a bit of Chinese you will know that Han Bao (漢堡) is a word for hamburger. Basically, it's a burger but instead of bread they use a steamed bun. If you are in Tainan it's a must try. :)
禾記嫩骨飯 (Hé jì nèn gú fàn)
This is one very special Chinese restaurant. This place is particularly famous in Tainan because it’s already become a chain. Actually, the dishes are very simple - such as rice and meat, but…. the devil is in the details, and in this case it’s the special way they prepare their meats. Of course, that's the chef's secret, but they're delicious. The flag dish is braised pork with soft bones. And indeed the bones are so soft that you can easily eat them! Apart from that you can find other dishes, such as Braised Pork Noodles.
三船熱炒100 (三船の鳗丼 Sānchuán de mán jǐng)
100 stir-fried Taiwanese traditional food. You can see a lot of places with number "100" on the street in Taiwan and especially at night there are crowds feasting there. The number 100 in the name is not an accident here - it’s the price of most of the dishes on the menu - around 100$. Apart from Taiwanese delicacies - such a pig heart, intestines and so on, you can also order typical Japanese meals - such as freshly made sashimi, sushi. It’s worth mentioning that the owner is an eel farmer, so if you love this kind of fish, you will find great quality unagi here!
This is one of the five stories that are coming soon. Feel free to ask any questions you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan… never, or not recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

Just noticed a review my tours got a few months ago. My tour guest is a well to do lawyer / kick-boxer from England. The closest I've ever come to meeting a real life James Bond. An amazingly cool guy. This is the review he gave :
A Great Gonzo Tour of Taiwan
I had the pleasure of riding with M in June 2019. I spent about 8 days on the road with him. It was just the two of us since I had contacted him only a week prior to arriving in Taiwan to arrange the tour. Despite not running a planned tour on my dates, M was very helpful and arranged at late notice a fantastic ride.
The experience overall was excellent, not only because of the staggeringly beautiful Taiwanese scenery and twisty, engaging roads, but also because M is a thoroughly knowledgeable guide and riding partner.
The Bike
I was riding a Yamaha Force 155cc twist-and-go moped - described by M as 'the best scooter on planet earth'. I have no reason to disagree. I come from a big-bike background and do not have much scooter experience, but the little bike is incredibly easy to ride and does all that you need on the Taiwanese roads. It doesn't have manually operated gears (good for beginners) and the brakes are both on the bars (again, confidence-inspiring for beginners). I was initially unsure about riding a small moped, being used to 750cc plus bikes back at home, but I found the bike entirely satisfactory for the kinds of riding that we were doing. It has a lot of storage, is easy to get on and off quickly, and is pretty comfortable even over long distance.
I should add that the tyres were in good condition, the brakes fine and the overall mechanical state of the bike good. M definitely looks after the mopeds and keeps them safe and roadworthy.
The Accommodation
The accommodation was always pleasant. Some nights were spent in smaller, less fancy rooms, others in world-class high end rooms. Overall the rooms were clean, comfortable and safe. I shared with M throughout, and I understand that this is usual on his larger tours too.
The Food
We ate well, from the odd 7-11 lunchtime (which in Taiwan is more or less a roadside restaurant where many people eat their afternoon meal) to delicious seafood hotpots to night markets.
I have lived in China before so I have no problems with Asian food. Even if you aren't an adventurous eater I'm sure in Taiwan you can find more Western fare. In any event Taiwanese food is generally prepared in much cleaner environments and less intensely spiced that other Asian cuisines, so I think most tour participants wouldn't have any issues.
The Riding
The riding was absolutely fantastic and mind blowing. We rode cities, twisties in the jungle, mountain highlands, gorges - reaching at one stage a pass at 3,275 metres above sea level. I have never been to a country in which the scenery is so varied over short geographical distances. On the same day you can be above the clouds and then on a coastal road.
M takes a lot of time to show you the less well-known areas of Taiwan. For example, he'll frequently take a detour to show you an aboriginal village (of which there are many in Taiwan) and talk you through its history and significance.
He also suits riding speed to client - I am an experienced rider and we both set a pace to match.
M takes you to a number of sites each day, ranging from temples to suspension bridges to caves to coastal vistas. You will go to all of the famous landmarks, e.g. Taroko Gorge etc.
This has the added advantage of M being your tour guide for these sites as well as on the road.
The Man
M13 is a very colourful character. His 20 years in Taiwan makes him a local expert. His Mandarin is excellent and his understanding of Taiwanese culture rich and deep.
When you tour with M, who is of course famous for his very successful YouTube channel, you embark upon a Gonzo experience which brings with it the articulate, far-ranging and sometimes downright hilarious conversations of which M is capable. He is a unique man whose idiosyncrasies are set upon a bedrock of kindness and good intent. Travelling with him was great fun. He is genuinely enthusiastic about his work and his passions, and that makes him a pleasure to be around.
Unusually for a tour participant, I was not aware of his YouTube celebrity until just before I joined him in Taoyuan. I can see why he has over 200,000 subscribers on that platform as he is engaging on many levels.
Overall
Overall I would wholeheartedly recommend M's tours. He is honest, knowledgeable and interesting. His bikes are good and the roads excellent. Taiwan is an incredible country with diverse scenery, food and climates. It is also less well-known than most Asian destinations, and that makes touring through it on a bike all the more exciting.
I would definitely come back! Thanks M and Xiao Mei (his charming dog who accompanied us on tour).

In Taiwan, people absolutely LOVE hot pot. The good thing is there are so many different kinds of hot pot here and we NEVER get bored of it. "Hot Pot with Pickled Cabbage and White Meat" is from the north-east of China. Pickled cabbage is actually quite healthy and is said to help your intestines, white meat is basically pork with more fat contained. People from the north of China eat plenty of food made from flour and wheat. That's why the dumplings, noodles, and "餅" (bing, which is basically pieces of flour made into different flavors and style) from the North are so famous!
Remember to go with a few friends so everyone can share the food ;-)
