In Memory of Lin Ximing
One day in October, I was still in bed, the phone rang. “I’m Lin Ximing.” “Yes.” “How are you? I have a favor to ask. I want to raise funds from my students and friends to purchase your narrative painting Taiwan Forefathers – Arriving Shore and give it to my teacher as a gift.” “Let’s chat. Please give me a call when you have time.” That was Oct. 2, Wednesday. I called five times but didn’t hear from him. The following Tuesday, when I was teaching in my studio, I learned from my student Zhao Meiying that Lin Ximing just passed away.
More than twenty years ago, Lin Ximing and I met at an Italian coffee shop in my apartment complex every afternoon. Almost all the photographers of the major newspapers in Taipei came to this coffee shop everyday to wait for the photo studio across the street to open to develop their news photos. They would leave as soon as the photos were ready. In 2001, I had a solo exhibition at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. During the opening ceremony, my students noticed a flower basket labeled as “Italian” and became excited. I couldn’t think of any Italian friends. All of a sudden, I saw Lin Ximing smiling at the door and it dawned on me that the flower basket was from the group of photographers that met at the Italian coffee shop.
When I worked on the second draft of oil painting Arriving Shore, I asked Lin to be a model of one of the farmers. He agreed right away. After the painting was done, he often pointed to young farmer with a red head scarf in the catalog of the painting and told other people, “That’s me!”
After he came down with illness, he kept himself busy by detailing his condition and treatment on Facebook. When he was feeling a little bit better, he took his students to Mainland China for photography classes. Now he’s gone, along with his passion and grace. How I miss him, my dear friend!

If I had to describe our June holidays in 3 words, they would be FUN, FIT and FAMILY.
Fun because we did so much and played so much in these 4 weeks. Every week was almost fully packed! Never mind that we didn't go overseas, we had so much fun on our own shore and it shows that sometimes we don't have to look far as the best things are right in front of us. Happiness is what we make out of it, right?
Fit because we travelled so much and it was mainly through public transport, which meant we walked a good deal too. I'm glad that these kids don't complain (much) when I tell them we are travelling far; sometimes it can take up to an hour and a half just to get to our destination. It's been a deliberate effort on my part avoiding taxi rides since we had time to spare this month and I hope they learn not to take anything for granted.
Family because the kids and I spent every day together and the hubby made effort to spend more time with us too, especially on weekends. It's what I love most about holidays - to be with these energetic kids 24/7, even if they drive me nuts at times.
We were at #Nestopia_sg over the weekend and it was an impromptu decision that did us all good. We had free passes but I had no obligations to do any post, so I reminded myself to keep the phone in the bag and just be fully present with the kids. How many times are we there but not really there, you know what I mean?
The boy made his first attempt to climb up rope structures and down the steep tunnel slides, and it was all because I was there to encourage him bit by bit. He wanted me to climb with him and that I did, even if his favourite tower was the hardest for me because of the tight space. I had to practically lie down flat on each tier, drag myself across, find the opening and pull my body up to the next tier - and there were over a dozen tiers! It was challenging and took me a long time, but we did it again, and again, and again.
Seeing his big smile at the end of it and how he managed to conquer his initial fear - fyi his sisters are daredevils but this boy is more timid - that was the best reward for me. And I didn't need to capture it with the phone; I just had to use my ❤.
