This photo may have absolutely nothing to do with what I'm about to say, but it'll be interesting to see how many people actually pay attention to the content.

I was on the bus the other day, when an older gentleman boarded. Fairly disheveled with tremors that looked possibly like Parkinson's, the man took a seat, looking around nervously, almost as if he was scanning his environment to contemplate his next move.

Soon enough, he started to approach individuals, asking for money so he could eat.

Some ignored him and others, waved him away even before he could speak. As he went past me, I felt the heaviness of his disappointment. I looked into my clutch to see if I had some smaller change to give him, should he come to me.

And he did. And almost as soon as he started speaking, I handed him the five dollar note I had held in my hand. He thanked me and sat back down.

When the time came, he disembarked at Newton Circus (a popular food destination in Singapore). As I saw him walk towards the hawker center, I knew he was going to eat. Or buy himself a bottle of beer. Or cigarettes. Whatever.

He asked and I obliged. What he did with that $5 is no business of mine. It was a gift. And when you give, you don't question.

If it made him happy even for a brief moment, then it makes me happy.
I got off the bus feeling a little lighter than I had possibly made somebody's day.

It wasn't but five minutes later that I assisted a struggling lady carrying a pram down the stairs, with what must have been a three-year-old strapped in, while at least four other people passed by and others just stood, watching.

These incidents were back-to-back and it got me thinking about what sort of uncaring society we've become. I'm not saying you've to offer money to every one who asks. But a struggling mother and her pram???

Be kind people. Be aware of what's happening around you.

Empathise and be compassionate. It costs nothing.
