Today marks the 5th Anniversary of the Umbrella Movement.
On August 31, 2014, China handed down a proposal to introduce universal suffrage in Hong Kong, however, Chief Executive candidates must be pre-approved.
The decision was widely seen to be highly restrictive and the election was seen to be not genuine democratic.
On 28th September, 2014, the first tear gas was fired on Hong Kong citizens, who demanded a genuine universal suffrage. The 87 tear gas fired marked the start of the 79-day umbrella movement, with several major city intersections occupied.
The proposed reform was finally rejected by the Legislative Council in 2015.
In Hong Kong, we are not allowed to choose our Chief Executive, yet. Only 1,200 out of 7 million Hong Kong people can cast a ballot in the Hong Kong’s chief executive election.

⚠ ⚠ ⚠ 八月五日 全城罷工 there will be a city-wide strike and assembly against the extradition law amendment on 5 August (Monday) in the following districts: Shatin, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun, Wong Tai Sin, Tai Po, Mong Kok, Admiralty.
Millions have protested since June 2019, requesting for the complete withdrawal of the extradition bill.
At the same time, the public are furious about police brutality towards many in protests, including medical volunteer, reporters and passersby, with tools of high offensiveness. The police’s inability to stop the Yuen Long gang attack has added fuel to the fire. Only a few of the attackers were arrested. But in contrast, many more protesters have been arrested and charged.
To many Hongkongers, going on strikes may seem to be the last resort. We ask for your understanding if there is any inconvenience caused to your trip.
