Giap's story is similar to many Viet kieu and Vietnamese overseas abroad. The resilience of the refugee immigration struggle combined with the eventual return home to support family and friends back in the motherland is something that is still on going today. It's an important historical and present sociological aspect of the Vietnamese diaspora that is seldom discussed even though it's apparent i almost every household past or present. Thank you to Giap for sharing his story. If anyone else wants their story told and our schedule aligns, then maybe it'll happen. Heck, Giap just reached out to me one day and I just came over to his house not even knowing a thing. And it turned out to be a great story, but also a great opportunity to share such a life.
Thanks to Giap for the chance to create this video and the main reason why I went back to Vietnam during the summer. When I left in March, I had no plans at all to return during the summer, but meeting him and his enthusiasm for sharing the Vietnamese diaspora and culture and his story made the decision a lot easier. Because of Giap, we have all of these Vietnam videos that I've released in the last few weeks and the next few weeks. Thank you Giap. Meeting one person can definitely change the course of our life. Who knows what's next?

I've always wondered what Vietnam was like, especially after hearing about it in history books my whole life, but it definitely was nothing like what I was expecting. It exceeded all expectations in fact!
I'm also really glad that the first city I ever visited in Vietnam was Hoy An because it set the bar very high for the rest of the country. Very calm and relaxing. Brilliant weather that was neither too hot nor too cold. Very tourist friendly yet maintaining every aspect of it's Asian-ness. And a beautiful sense of harmony, decoration and culture.

My first taste of Life in Vietnam: Starting the day nice and early in the taxi en route to the old part of the city, also known as "old Town" to the tourists. A very busy district that is absolutely swamped with people and bikes and motorbikes and tourists and shops and stalls... a VERY COLOURFUL PLACE!
Once we got there we decided to take a little ride in some rickshaws that were parked on the side of the streets. Pretty fun. I felt like the queen strolling around getting pushed around lavishly. hehe
The Vietnamese Rickshaws took us around 'old town', down all the beautiful streets that were filled with merchants and vendors selling special Vietnamese bits and pieces and then along the river.
It was quite crazy to see how everyone's drives on the streets. I think I now understand why people think that asian's drive like crazy. HAHA. Because the Vietnamese have a talent of not crashing considering the chaos that happens on the streets. hehe.
Also got to go through the wet market where women were selling food stuffs and local produce. Such a beautiful layout of colours and culture. Loved it there. Even met this lady who was releasing tied up crabs and throwing them back into the river...
Couldn't for the life of me communicate with her because she didn't speak English, but I thought it was quite a sweet thing she was doing.
Then we went to a small food center and I had my first proper official Vietnamese meal. I got a vegetarian noodle dish and I absolutely LOVED it. I think it was my favourite meal while I was there.
We headed back home in the early afternoon where I greeted my bed with much enthusiasm.
And that was the end of the video!
Thank you guys for watching and seeing a little bit of the life in Vietnam. Looking forward to the next one!

Brief history on my YouTube presence. I went to Vietnam in 2009 and filmed a bunch of short clips and vlogs because they helped me ease through the culture shock by having something to share with my friends when I came home. Then I came back to Vietnam by myself a year later in 2010 and traveled to 10 different cities and fell in love with Vietnam. A year prior, I hated it and didn't want to come back. In late 2011 I moved over with the intentions of staying for a year. This is when I started SoJournaling Vietnam travelogues or travel documentaries featuring specific cities. Then a year later I bought a smart phone (HTC One S) and started recording clips off it and called that series VietnaMoments, which I started to film friends like OldBoy off of. This was when my channel started to pick up some momentum. Then I switched channels and started monetizing in 2013 and in late 2014 I taped an episode of Bizarre Foods and producers encouraged me to keep going and make better videos. In January of 2015 was when I first bought real audio equipment and started taking the YouTube channel a lot more seriously. Here we are now. 100K subs here we come! Thank you everyone!
