My father stepped on a landmine and was brought home to us in pieces in a casket. After that, my mother was left alone, in a hostile environment, with four kids under the age of fifteen.
1. step on a landmine
2. a casket
3. a hostile environment
4. under the age of 不滿…

She was Catholic Croatian and my father was Orthodox Serbian. It was very unusual for people from these two backgrounds to marry, until 1940, when Tito tried to bring the country together as Yugoslavs under communism, and part of that was encouraging mixed marriages.
5. Catholic Croatian
6. Orthodox Serbian
7. mixed marriages

As a child, I spent my days looking after goats and sheep in an idyllic environment on the coast. But in 1993, Croatians suddenly decided they wanted to break away from Yugoslavia, and my father, as a minority Serb who lived in Croatia, enlisted in the war to fight against the independence movement. It was an extremely difficult time for my mother, because she was an ethnic Croat living alone in an enclave full of Serbs, at a time when neighbours were killing neighbours. People would loiter in front of her house, sharpening their knives, and she frequently faced death threats. She feared for her life, and started sleeping with an AK-47 beneath her bed.
8. an idyllic environment
9. break away from 從...
10. loiter
11. the independence movement

It was a difficult time to live. There was little food. We frequently had to run to bomb shelters, and saw dead bodies on the streets. Finally, when I was 8, we, along with over 300,000 ethnic Serbs, were removed from our homes in the biggest movement of people since World War II. Although Serbia took us in, they didn’t want us there, as they saw us as cowards who hadn’t put up enough of a fight.
12. bomb shelter
13. along with 與...一起
14. a coward
15. put up a fight
*put up a fight : to show or express a particular type of opposition to something

Then the Kosovo war started. This led to even more running and displacement for us. It was even worse when NATO started bombing because they had planes with bombs that would dig a crater. We fled into the mountains and hid in the dark, because there were no bomb shelters capable of providing sanctuary for so many people.
16. displacement
18. be capable of 能夠
19. bomb shelter
20. provide sanctuary

Finally, we found out we had been accepted to come as refugees to Adelaide, in Australia. Arriving was a healing process for us, but there were also a lot of challenges. The kids at school called us war criminals and accused of being responsible for Serbian massacres that we knew nothing about. They also called us the KGB Twins, and sometimes they would tap us down before going to class to ‘make sure we didn’t have any bombs on us’.
21. a refugee 難民
22. a healing process
23. war criminials
24. Serbian massacres

One time, we were beaten up after school and my twin ended up in hospital with swelling around his brain. It was horrible because after all we had survived, he was on the verge of dying on an Australian playground because of racism. It took a couple of years for us to really find home here, and that was because we ended up changing to a more multicultural school in year 11, where we found other students who were survivors of wars from Somalia, Iraq, Vietnam, South Sudan and Cambodia. And we all bonded together as children of war.
25. racism
26. on the verge of… …
27. a multicultural school
28. bond together
29. children of war

My eldest brother had always wanted to be an engineer, but as the man of the family, he had to go to work instead. As soon as he arrived, he went to work at Holden in Elizabeth, where he made cars for 18 years, until the day they shut the factory down. Sometimes he would bring home pamphlets from the union, and as a result I became really interested in employment law and industrial relations. So I decided to go to law school, and I’m now a union lawyer for the CFMEU.*

I represent factory workers who are low paid and award dependent. It’s a privilege to recover stolen wages and represent these workers when they’ve been unfairly dismissed or discriminated against. I especially love representing non-English speaking migrant workers, as they are prone to exploitation. I see my mother and my older brother in every one of them.

36. be unfairly dismissed or discriminated
37. be prone to...

For the last 6 years, I’ve also volunteered for a refugee legal centre, helping asylum seekers to complete their temporary protection visa applications. Out of my siblings, I think I was the most affected by the war, so hearing their stories of trauma isn’t always easy. But I feel it’s important for me to try to help others in need of protection.
38. asylum seeker
39. protection visa
40. out of 在...之中
41. stories of trauma
42. in need of…

Zagreb
Zagreb
-
So Zagreb isn’t my number 1 place to go in Croatia. But since it’s capital of the country and most international planes come to the capital only, so it’s not a bad idea to stay in here for a day or two, to adjust jet-lag and have a very first glimpse of Croatia.
-
➡️行程景點 (sightseeing in Zagreb):
➡️St.Mark’s Square 圖1
➡️Museum of broken relationship
➡️Gric Tunnel 圖5
➡️Ban Jelacic Square 圖2
-
🚦交通 ( transportation ):
🚦shuttle Bus from Airport to Zagreb (direct)
🚦to every attractions basically by walking
-
Wandering in Zagreb, we realise that it is a walkable city where you can basically walk to most of the attractions. I highly recommend you to visit the museum of broken relationships. Great museum plus you can see the spectacular view of the city from outside. Make sure you visit Gric tunnel as well, the tunnel was built during World War Two as a shelter for saving people of Zagreb from air bombardments.

Second stop on my Pacific island hopping: Chuuk in Micronesia
---

Chuuk Island (or Truk) is in Federated States of Micronesia. It is only less than two hours of flight away from Guam. This tiny island is less than 100 square km, and is a world famous wreck diving spot. There are more than 60 ships and countless planes and submarine wreckage here as shown in the photo. Why is there so many of wreckage?
.
After WWI, Micronesia was handed over to Japan by the International Federation, sobit became the naval base of Japanese military. There were more than 50,000 military personnels, and countless battle ships. Hence, Chuuk was also called "the Pacific Gibraltar" or "the Japanese Pearl Habour".
.
February 17, 1944, American air force executed the three day long of "Operation Hailstone." Many planes came to bomb the Chuuk Habour, and many ships and hundreds of planes were bomber down. The damage was so devastating that Chuuk island is the called "the world's biggest ship graveyard."
.
Many years afterwards, in 70s, a rich Chuukese named Aisek proposed to keep Chuuk lagoon as a protected area in memory of the 1944 Operation Hailstone, which he had witnessed himself. He then opened a dive hotel called Blue Lagoon Resort, providing diving services for divers from all over the world to wreck dive and witness the history. He was then listed in the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame.
.
All the wreckage from years ago has been covered by lush colorful coral and anemone. Many fishes have called it home. It is marvelously beautiful. But all the cups and plates, bullets and bombs, and some human remains, are still sunk in here in the Pacific quietly.
.
War is really awful. But regardless how horribly humans fight, in the end, the Mother Ocean will still slowly transform it into something beautiful, into part of her.
.
So here I am! I am staying in Blue Lagoon Resort doing some wreck diving!! There is nothing else one can do on this island and there is no tourism resources. it is also very dangerous to leave the hotel. The locals attack foreigners! I even saw a few ghosts last night!! 😰😰😰😰😰 So don't come here if you are not a serious advance diver!!

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE HIROSHIMA ATOMIC BOMBING (& NAGASAKI)
*CORRECTION: In the video, the location of Nagasaki is off. It should be more on the left side of Kyushu island.
1) Godzilla
Godzilla, the giant Japanese dinosaur-looking monster, a worldwide pop culture icon; who’s been in numerous movies.
Why am I mentioning this? Well, Godzilla owes its existence to the atomic bombs. In the aftermath, with the devastation still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was created as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their destructive capabilities.
2) The Korean Casualties
An enormous number of Koreans also perished in the blast. In fact, around 25% of casualties were Koreans. Korea was under Japanese rule at the time so there were many drafted or conscripted Koreans in Hiroshima & Nagasaki. It’s unfortunate that the Korean victims of this tragedy have often been neglected
3) Close Call Kyoto
Today’s Kyoto landscape would have been greatly altered, and not for the better, if the Americans had gone about their original plan. The targets were in fact supposed to be Hiroshima & Kyoto. However, the US Secretary of War at the time, Henry L Stimson, insisted on sparing the city
4) The Pamphlet Warnings
Just prior to dropping the Atomic bombs, the US Airforce released pamphlets or leaflets from their planes warning Japanese citizens of the impending destruction. They were largely ineffective.
5) The Little Boy & The Fat Man
These were the American codenames of the two atomic bombs.
6) The American Casualties
12 American airmen were captured, then taken to the Chugoku Military Police Headquarters in Hiroshima, where the American weapon of mass destruction indiscriminately took them out.
7) Go
An important Go tournament was held in the suburbs of Hiroshima, about 5 km from ground zero; a pivotal match up was ongoing between champion Hashimoto and the challenger Iwamoto. When the atomic bomb went off, people were injured, buildings were damaged, and the game came to an immediate halt. Fortunately no one died as tournament officials had earlier moved the game away from the blast radius after coming across the American pamphlets.
The players took this opportunity to have a quick lunch break. Afterwards on the same day, they finished the game. White won.
8) Operation Meetinghouse
As devastating as the atomic bombs were, it didn’t even rank as the most destructive bombing event of WW2. That title goes to the deathly firebombing of Tokyo by the US Air Force, also known as Operation Meetinghouse. This was estimated to be the single most destructive bombing attack not just in Japan, but in history.
9) The Flame Of Peace
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built in dedication to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city in the world to suffer a nuclear attack. In the park, sits The Flame of Peace which has burned continuously since 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear weapons are removed from the world and the planet is free from nuclear threat.
10) The Improbable Survivor
Tsutomu Yamaguchi worked for the Mitsubishi company, and on August 6th, 1945, he was away from home on a business trip in Hiroshima.
He witnessed the Little Boy dropping from the sky and the explosion ruptured his eardrums, blinded him, and left him with serious burns. But he was alive.
The very next day, he dragged his body to a station, made his way out of Hiroshima and back to his hometown. At home, he finally received treatment for his wounds.
Two days later, despite being seriously injured and heavily bandaged, he informed Mitsubishi that he was back from his Hiroshima business trip and ready to report to work. So, he went to work, as if nothing major had happened.
Yamaguchi was lucky to have survived the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb. However, he was unlucky that he went back home..
..to Nagasaki..
