I would like to thank all my English speaking friends and supporters in the US and world abroad for all the support of the past 6-7 years. It’s been a tough journey and I appreciate everyone who messaged me words of encouragement and congratulations.
As most of my audience are Chinese speaking, I apologize for not always posting in English. I’ll try to be better about that in the future. Below is a my short race recap of my 3:58:54 record breaking performance that went down back in Taiwan.
Nervous international fights, dismantled and reassembled my bike 3 times, 14 days of quarantine in un air conditioned heat chamber LOL (Taiwan is kind of hot), and my best 70.3 half Ironman race ever, here we are! Enjoy.. thanks again
Last year at Elsinore 70.3 in Denmark I underestimated the race courses’s difficulty, thinking for such a flat course I can easily break 4 hours. The bike leg didn’t go well, but running off the bike, I did some quick math and thought a 1:15 half marathon will be enough. During that time I still wasn’t very confident of my own endurance and was petrified of bonking halfway through the run. Nervous to push during the run, I held back until the last 5k. When I entered the finishing chute I saw the clock and it started with 4....I knew I had failed.
I was very regretful of my mentality and attitude for that race. Ever since then every single training run I do where I start to feel my legs go weak and felt the same fear at Elsinore 70.3, I would stay calm, endure the pain, and keep moving forward at the limit.
After more than a year, I took the risky flight from pandemic hard hit California to my home country Taiwan and then quarantined for 14 days. Thankfully I made it to start line for Ironman Taiwan 70.3 safe and healthy. I told myself at that moment, do not waste this opportunity.
I knew I couldn’t keep up with Sam during the swim, but I was quietly confident in my form, after a whole year of band work and technique help from my wife, I didn’t get any jello arms through the swim and was able to push full gas.
After I got to the shore, I got on my trusty Giant trinity (the dragon that changes color) and started my most confident sport of cycling, chasing after Sam. The first lap my old injury in my left hip came back to haunt me so I stayed conservative, though still able to average 42 kph. Second lap my left hip warmed up and the pain went away so I went full gas, enjoying the nice rolling course averaging 45-50kph on the 11 highway along the coast. I passed by many other competitors who cheered me on giving me a lot of energy.
Getting off the bike, I felt really good and started off averaging 3:30/km. I thought to myself a 1:15 half marathon is definitely doable. As I passed Sam at 4km mark my pace kept dropping and heart rate kept climbing. All of a sudden the clouds went away and the sun came out to play. I thought crap, this is bad. Every aid station I would grab two cups to drink and two cups to pour on myself, not wanting to slow down to waste anymore time. Every kilometer my pace would drop by a second and by halfway I did the math and realized breaking 4 was not going to happen. I started to feel very depressed and wanting to cry. I thought about How I spent the whole year training for this one race, left my family and my wife at home for a whole month, quarantined for 2 weeks, what the hell am I doing? I snapped out of that and slapped myself mentally and said if I’m not going to break 4 hours today I’m going to at least run until I got nothing left to give myself some closure. I wanted to finish the race not breaking four hours knowing I did my very best and didn’t have it, and not because I was scared. I had blisters underneath my thumb toe nail and it was extremely painful but I carried on. I slogged
Through the last 10km and found myself back in the finishing area. A friend yelled you still have two minutes til 4 hours! I still had hope and accelerated like crazy. I crossed the finish line and couldn’t believe my eyes... 3:58:54
This is my most satisfying race ever. I realized you really can’t let off until the finish line, because anything can happen. This race was very special since I basically time trialed alone from start to finish. To break 4 hours, the Taiwanese nations record for 70.3, and to share the race course with Sam, the pro athlete that inspired me to chase my dream , I couldn’t be more grateful.

【From Taiwan with Love: A Story of an Indonesian Student Who is Struggling in NTPU】
^_^
Hi there, my name is Muhammad Hafizhuddin Al Ghifary, and you can call me Muhammad (穆罕默德). I come from Indonesia and the eldest son from 5 siblings in my family. I graduated from the Al Azhar Indonesia University (UAI) in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations (IRs) and University’s Best Graduate. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in International Program on Urban Governance (IPUG) at the 國立臺北大學National Taipei University (NTPU), under the Ministry of Education Taiwan scholarship 2018. It is such an opportunity for me to get to know deeper about Formosa, Taiwan. It was a tough decision for me to go to Taiwan since I had no any intention to study abroad but an accident. Besides, as a Muslim, I came up with a critical question that haunted me, "can I practice my Muslim faith in a non-Muslim country? Will I be safe?” But I soon remembered a famous Dutch proverb that goes “Leiden is lijden,” Leading is Suffering, in other words, I must always be prepared no matter what happens.
It was such a memorable "welcoming" moment when I was touching down Taiwan for the very first time. I was waiting for my senior to fetch me at the airport while having lunch. There came a senior lady who was working for a food shop asking for permission to have lunch in front of me at the same table since many tables were occupied during that time. Then I encouraged myself to greet her by saying "ni hao," and soon she started talking to me a little bit longer in Chinese in which I didn't understand since I never learned it before. Luckily, there was a clerk who was able to speak English and helped me to interpret between the senior lady and me. We were having a very pleasant conversation until my senior came and we're about to leave. Suddenly, the senior lady told me to wait for a second, and she grabbed her Pearl Milk Tea which it was the first time I tasted the favorite drink in Taiwan. Seeing her friend did that, the clerk who helped me interpreting also rushed into her room to grab me a Taiwanese cookie. I was surprised and couldn't help but speechless receiving the heart-kindness of Taiwan from both ladies. Since then, I have already considered Taiwan as my second HOME! 我非常爱臺灣!
Being a student in IPUG is such a grace for me. The campus location is really strategic, natural with a mini forest and artificial lake. It's open for public so that we can have sports and recreation with our family. The buildings are astonishing, especially when it comes to the library building that shaped an owl. The teachers are really nice and humble. Not to mention they are really friendly. I still remembered when one teacher treated my classmate and me a Taiwanese iced cream dessert after finishing our assignments in the middle our class running. And the list still goes on and on after one teacher treated us. Moreover, the teachers are really broad and open-minded. They graduated from many top universities in the world, such as University of Cambridge, University of Washington and the Maryland. So no wonder how they would teach and guide us in Urban Governance study.
After all, Taiwan has made speechless with the all beauties within it. And I would say that there is no better place for you to study Urban-related in a calm environment with outstanding teachers but in IPUG, NTPU. My dear beloved brothers and sisters out there, I dare you to come to Taiwan and join us in IPUG!

2020 Copenhagen Democracy Summit
Fighting for Democracy – From the Battlegrounds of Hong Kong
Joshua Wong
18 June 2020
Thank you so much for inviting me to speak, Ryan. I say this knowing I might not have the chance to do so again in the future, and this is not an exaggeration. Many of you still recall the scene when millions of Hong Kongers took to the street last year. We opposed the extradition arrangements that would’ve essentially allowed legalized kidnapping: Hong Kongers found guilty of breaking Chinese law could be sent to stand trial in a Chinese court. The authorities eventually withdrew the bill under tremendous pressure, but they also responded our demand to full democracy with oppressive policing forces. The number of arrested protested since last summer is already more than the number of prisoners in Hong Kong right now. More than thousands were arrested and charged with rioting. Many more injured or even went missing.
New Crackdown
This prolonged struggle with the Chinese Communist Party for years now. The Umbrella Movement broke out in 2014 demanding that Beijing lived up to its promises of democracy. But rather than doing so in honour of the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984, Xi Jinping’s crackdown on our autonomy has only intensified over time.
What Xi Jinping learnt from Hong Kong’s democratic movement last year is to become more draconic and oppressive. It would be best to have me sent across the border to stand trial directly than to engage in dynamic diplomatic talks and negotiation. Therefore, precisely one year afterwards, when I am attending this summit, Beijing's legislature, the NPCSC, at the same time holds meetings, finalizing a sweeping national security law that targets democratic activists like myself.
Under the pretext of ‘national security’, this law purports to target acts of “collusion with foreign forces’’. Beijing did not define what is ‘’collusion’’, but it will wield massive discretionary power to punish activists and electoral candidates on the one hand, and cut off Hong Kong from the international society and their crucial support, on the other. Take this occasion as an example, I’m convinced that every word comes from my mouth today could well become proof of crime at the Chinese courtroom in the near future. Worse still, not only can democratic activists and legislators who have participated in international advocacy efforts be barred from running elections or even imprisoned, INGOs and other organizations, including their personnel and assets, can also be subject to legal persecution.
So the developments in Hong Kong have changed quite swiftly. Large-scale protests defying the communist government may no longer be an option. It could be my last testimony when I am still free, yet prosecuted and put behind bars under the sweeping security law. Our long march to democracy will be forced into a prolonged period of fierce crackdown, perhaps similar to what Poland experienced in the Communist era, with secret police agency stationed in the city.
The Wounds of Hong Kong are Proof of Defying Beijing’s Oppression
These scenarios may create a stark contrast with the impression we usually have to a cosmopolitan Hong Kong famous for its international financial centre. The economic freedom, free flow of capital and freedom to information we used to enjoy in Hong Kong, will fade away after the law imposed. It is also the Sword of Damocles over all investors and ex-pats living and working on this island. When geopolitical tension intensifies, ex-pats can fall victim to the ill-defined law and China's hostage diplomacy. In the past, two Canadian nationals were detained for nearly two years as retaliation to Huawei's executive Meng Wanzhou's arrest, let alone Swedish NGO worker Peter Dahlin, Australian writer Yang Hengjun and Taiwanese NGO activist Lee Ming-che. Foreign journalists, human rights workers and academics were barred from Hong Kong. When China makes national security its priority, no one is safe.
Citizen journalists, booksellers, NGO workers, religious groups, online bloggers, booksellers, writers, human rights defenders or even critics of government policies are put behind bars. Amnesty International also raised concerns about its spill-out effects on economic activities and online speech. Once the law reaches out its claw to this beacon of liberty on China's soul, this vibrant civil society is on the brink of collapse.
Certainly, I would devote whatever efforts I can to defy this new round of oppression. But Beijing’s continued moves to crush democracy in Xinjiang and in Hong Kong also explain the Goliath we are facing is not as fierce as it looks like. In the past two decades, Beijing’s aggressive expansion in Europe, Asia and Africa has given a warning signal to democratic states all over the world. The world is awakening from the Chinese Nightmare. If we are determined to safeguard democratic aspirations, we must act to defy China's dictatoral grip.
Towards Democracy: Pain, Tears and Compassion.
In Hong Kong, we had experienced many depressing moments last year when state-mobilized mobs attacked passengers in the metro station, when police forcefully entered the university campus to arrest and to torture protestors, when witnessing countless students younger than me were put behind bars. What drives us to continue our struggle? My answer is compassion.
As my dear friend, Brian Leung said, ‘’Hong Kong Belongs to Everyone Who Shares Its Pain’’. In the previous year, we burst into tears mourning the death of protestors, we shared boxes of surgical masks to one another to defend ourselves from the Coronavirus. I also pray for protesters who are forced to leave our home because of their sacrifice in the movement. I pray for brothers who are struggled in jail now and I pray for those who will become political refugees soon. They are the reasons I’m still fighting in this battle. As we grow in pain, in tears and in compassion, I believe we shall succeed one day.
Thank you.
