予定日、産休、つわり・・・妊娠にまつわる英語表現

前回のコラムでは「妊娠」を表す様々な英表現をご紹介しましたが、今回は「つわり」、「予定日」、「産休」、「お腹のふくらみ」など、妊娠にまつわる英語表現をご紹介したいと思います。

1) Due date
→「予定日」

Due dateは「期日」を表すときに良く使われます。例えば、宿題の提出期日や光熱費の支払い期日などのことをdue dateと言いますが、妊娠している女性や赤ちゃんに対して使われる場合は、「子供が産まれる期日=予定日」になります。
<例文>
When is your due date?
(予定日はいつごろですか?)
My due date is May 24th, but we’ll see!
(予定日は5月24日だけど、実際はどうなるんでしょうね?)
My first was born 3 weeks before her due date, so we’ll see what happens this time.
(一人目は3週間早く産まれてきたけど、今回はどうなるかしら。)

2) Maternity leave
→「産休」

出産のために会社を休む「産休」を英語でmaternity leaveと言います。育児のために休む「育児休暇」はchild rearing leaveと訳されることが多いのですが、アメリカには育休の制度自体がないため、多くの人にとってchild rearing leaveではしっくりこないこともあり、maternity leaveの方が通じる場合が多いと思われます。また、アメリカ人男性の一部は一緒に産休や育休を取る場合があり、それはpaternity leave(父親の育児休暇)と言われています。
✔アメリカでは、産休として12週間の無給の休みを与えることのみ法律で定められている。カリフォルニア州、ニュージャージ州、ロードアイランド州では有給の産休制度が州法により存在するが、それら以外の州では基本無給であるため、多くの人が法律を変えたいと願っている。
✔州によって法律が異なるため、一部の給料を支払うことが定められている州があったり、12週間以上の休みが定められている州もある。
✔男性側が育児休暇として休む場合も無給が多く、有休を使って休みを取ることが多い。
<例文>
〜会話例1〜
A: I heard you’re pregnant, congratulations! When do you go on maternity leave?
(妊娠したと聞きました。おめでとうございます!いつから産休に入られますか?)
B: Thank you! We’re really excited. I’ll go on maternity leave in early April.
(ありがとうございます。とても楽しみにしています。産休には4月上旬に入る予定です。)
〜会話例2〜
A: How long will you be on maternity leave?
(産休はどれくらい取る予定ですか?)
B: I plan to take off for about 3 months.
(3ヵ月ぐらい休む予定です。)
〜会話例3〜
A: You’re going on maternity leave next week, right? Is your husband going to take time off too?
(来週から産休ですよね?旦那さんも休みを取るんですか?)
B: Yes. My husband will go on paternity leave a week after me.
(はい。夫は一週間後に休みに入る予定です。)

3) Morning sickness
→「つわり」

妊娠してから最初の2〜3ヶ月の間に起こる「つわり」を、英語では「morning sickness」と言います。一般的につわりは朝起きた時に起こる事が多いため英語ではこのように表現しますが、朝の時間帯に限らず「つわりがある」ことを「I have morning sickness」と言います。
✔「I've got morning sickness」または「I got morning sickness」とも言う。
✔「つわりがひどい」は「I have terrible / really bad morning sickness」または「I have a bad case of morning sickness」と言う。
<例文>
My morning sickness was really bad in my first trimester.
(妊娠初期はつわりがひどかったです。)
I'm having terrible morning sickness. I can't even eat.
(つわりがひどくて食べることすらできない。)
I've been suffering from bad morning sickness the last few weeks.
(ここ数週間、つわりがひどくて困っています。)

4) Baby bump
→「(妊娠により)膨らんだお腹」

Bumpは「こぶ」を意味することから、Baby bumpは妊婦さんのお腹がぽっこりと膨らんでいる様子を表します。基本的に、妊娠初期のお腹が少し膨らみ始めた頃に使われ、可愛らしい響きがあります。「You're stomach is getting big(お腹大きくなってきたね)」では少しストレート過ぎるので、友達のお腹がちょっと膨れてきた時には「You're starting to get a baby bump」を使ってみましょう。
<例文>
I'm starting to see your baby bump!
(お腹が膨れてきたね!)
She's already four months pregnant but she doesn't have a baby bump yet.
(彼女は妊娠4か月ですが、まだお腹が膨れていません。)
She posted a picture of her baby bump on Instagram.
(彼女はインスタにお腹が膨らんでいる写真を載せました。)

春天到了,煙霧繚繞的景色充滿詩意,但人總是欠缺幹勁、呵欠連連,是作病嗎?中醫理論認為這是人受到天氣潮濕的影響。濕有分外濕、內濕,外濕多與天氣有關,例如香港比較潮濕或常吹冷氣、坐草地或淋雨,都會令我們受外濕的影響。引致內濕多因為不良的飲食習慣,例如經常飲食生冷、嗜甜,或者經常都在滋陰補身,總在湯或糖水中加入花膠、雪耳等膠質重的食物,進食過量也會導致身體聚濕。所以在春天要適量祛濕,但祛濕前要分清自己是寒濕還是濕熱,因為兩種調理方法大不同!
寒濕人症狀:
- 舌淡紅,舌苔色白膩
- 女性白帶偏多
- 大便稀爛或如水狀
- 怕冷
- 手腳冰冷
寒濕人祛濕茶療:香茅炒米水
功效:暖胃驅寒,健脾祛濕,紓緩怕冷、困倦、容易腹瀉等寒濕症狀。
材料:香茅1支、炒米2湯匙
做法:香茅以刀背輕輕拍碎,切段備用。杯內加入800毫升熱水,加入所有材料泡5分鐘即可。連渣倒進保溫瓶,此茶能反覆沖泡至味淡。建議一星期飲用2-3天,連續兩星期為一個療程。

材料:炒白米
功效:暖胃散寒、溫暖四肢
濕熱人症狀:
- 舌偏紅,舌苔偏黃膩
- 女性白帶偏多,色偏黃味重

- 眼乾目赤
- 多面油,容易出暗瘡粉刺
濕熱人祛濕茶療:土茯苓菊花茶
功效:清熱袪濕,紓緩皮膚泛紅、痕癢、眼垢、四肢重墜等濕熱症狀。
材料:土茯苓12克、菊花9克
做法:土茯苓切碎,材料洗淨放保溫瓶,以熱開水沖洗一遍,注入熱開水焗10分鐘即可。此茶可反覆沖泡至味淡。建議一星期飲用2-3天,連續兩星期為一個療程。
注意:孕婦不宜飲用。

Feel unmotivated? Combat spring fatigue with dampness dispelling tea
Spring has arrived, and the view around us has become more lively and poetic. Yet, some of us may seem to lack enthusiasm and tend to yawn regularly. Is something wrong? From Chinese Medicine perspective, dampness and humidity of the weather can affect our bodies.
There are two types of dampness - internal and external. External dampness is closely associated with the weather. For instance, Hong Kong’s humid weather, or when an individual stays in an air-conditioned environment, sits on grass, or gets wet in the rain. These are examples of how external dampness around us.
As for internal dampness, it is normally caused by unhealthy dietary habits such as eating and drinking raw, cold, and sweet food and beverages. Those who like to add gelatinous ingredients such as fish maw and snow fungus into their soup or dessert to nourish the body can also cause dampness to accumulate in the body.
Hence, in order to eliminate dampness from the body during spring, it is important to understand if we are experiencing damp cold or damp heat as the treatment for each condition is very different from each other!
Symptoms of damp cold
- light red tongue with white tongue coating
- ladies have increased vaginal discharge
- loose or watery stool
- aversion to cold
- cold limbs
Healing tea for damp cold: Fried rice water with lemongrass
Effects: Warms the stomach and dispels cold, strengthens the spleen and dispels dampness. Relieves damp cold symptoms such as aversion to cold, drowsiness, and likelihood to have diarrhea.
Ingredients: 1 lemongrass, 2 tablespoons fried rice
Preparation: Slightly pound the lemongrass with the back of a knife and cut into sections. Add 800ml hot water into a cup. Add all the ingredients and steep for 5 minutes. The tea can be poured into thermos and re-browed until flavour weakens.
For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks for a treatment.
✔ CheckCheckCin Rice Water Recommendation: Fried Rice Water
Ingredients: Fried White Rice
Effects: Warms the stomach and dispels cold. Warms limbs.
Symptoms of damp heat
- Red tongue with yellowish tongue coating
- ladies have increased vaginal discharge that is yellowish with strong odor
- soft and sticky stool that is unusually smelly with feeling of heat in anus
- strong body odor
- red and dry eyes
- increased facial oil, prone to acne
Healing tea for damp heat: Smilax and chrysanthemum tea
Effects: Clears heat and dispels dampness. Relieves damp heat symptoms such as skin redness, itchiness, frequent eye discharge, heaviness in limbs.
Ingredients: 12g smilax, 9g chrysanthemum
Preparation: Cut smilax into pieces. Place all ingredients into thermos and rinse with hot water once. Add in hot water and steep for 10 minutes. This tea can be re-browed until flavour weakens.
For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks for a treatment.
Note: Not suitable for pregnant women.
✔CheckCheckCin Rice Water Recommendation: Dawn Rice Water
Ingredients: Red Rice, Coix Seed, White Rice
Effects: Suitable for the whole family to enhance physical wellbeing, especially those with a weak digestive system or with a phlegm and dampness body type.
Note: Not suitable for pregnant women.

Hari ni mommy dah makan asid folik ke belum?
Jangan ambil sambil lewa je ttg pengambilan asid folik ni ya, walaupun pil tu kecil je tapi kesannya besar kepada anak yang dikandung.
Kenapa asid folik penting untuk ibu hamil?
Menurut Dr Zubaidi Hj Ahmad, vitamin B9 amat diperlukan dalam membina sel-sel baru dalam tubuh. Ia tersangatlah penting dalam membina DNA yang baru dan membaiki DNA yang rosak dalam sel.
Bukan tu je, asid Folik membantu perkembangan otak dan spinal cord. Dalam masa 12 minggu pertama kehamilan, otak dan sistem saraf bayi terbentuk dan berkembang dengan pesat. Suka atau tidak, telanlah dengan niat untuk kebaikan anak.
Ada ibu yang tak berapa suka makan ubat, kalau anda fikirkan kandungan dan sayangkan anak.. makanlah. Suami, tolonglah ingatkan isteri ya kalau dia lupa nak makan.
Bahaya tau kalau tak amalkan masa awal2 mengandung.
Terdapat beberapa kajian menunjukkan asid folik membantu dalam mengurangkan risiko kecacatan saraf bayi seperti sipina bifida dan neural tube defect.
Spina bifida berlaku apabila pelindung yang melitupi saraf tunjang bayi tidak tertutup dengan sempurna. Ini boleh menyebabkan kerosakan saraf kekal.
Komplikasi akibat tak ambil asid folik juga boleh berlaku kepada ibu hamil.
Ibu boleh mengalami anemia akibat kekurang folate, dimana sel darah merah menjadi terlalu banyak (megaloblastic).
Selain masalah kecacatan tiub saraf, pengambilan asid folik juga penting bagi mengurangkan risiko terhadap sumbing (cleft lip / cleft palate) pada bayi yang dilahirkan.
Menurut BabyCenter, keperluan asid folik bagi ibu mengandung adalah kira-kira 400-600 microgram sehari.
Mommy juga boleh menambah kandungan asid folik dengan makanan yang berkhasiat, contohnya kekacang, sayuran berdaun hijau, avokado, bijirin penuh, dan buah-buahan sitrus.

Getting very tired as the days pass on by. Third trimester is all about exhaustion. I feel lifeless and pretty much fatigue most of the time. My body is starting to give in to the symptoms and I just have to have good head on my shoulders to keep going strong. 7 more weeks to go and though it feels like forever I'm sure it'll come quicker. Fighting!

I've been feeling really heavy lately so I always wondered if the baby was bigger than usual and turns out he is! I think we might've calculated about a week off but I guess I don't mind because I'd rather be further along my pregnancy. It's not easy physically and mentally. I always felt that if I'm feeling bloated that makes me unable to breathe and it's really frustrating. Before pregnancy I could diet and exercise to get myself together but now I can't control that feeling so it drives me crazy. Anyways, I'm happy the baby is healthy and growing. Just hope he doesn't grow too big that it may have complications during labor. Wishful thinking.

Out and about trying to get some exercise and rid of my massive headache that's been sticking around for a while! Also trying to get my calories in for my baby. Pregnancy sure feels weird and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I am trying my best with my situation and hopefully everything turns out all good in the end! Also not sure how the pregnancy is calculated but I thought I was 14 weeks, then 15 weeks and now back to 14 weeks pregnant. Very interesting indeed. As long as my baby doesn't squat in there forever then it's all good!
