Xiqu Centre or Cantonese Opera Theatre? Which one do you prefer?
Xiqu Centre 戲曲中心 was opened a year ago to promote and preserve the traditional culture of Chinese opera, mainly Cantonese Opera 粵曲.
However, the term “XiQu”, the Mandarin Pinyin of 戲曲 (Chinese Opera), has not been widely accepted by HongKongers. It is uncommon to see English names of streets and building comprising Mandarin Pinyin, instead, in Hong Kong, we use the Cantonese transliterations of their Chinese names (e.g. HeiKuk Centre).
While some have no idea of what “XiQu” mean and think that an English name (e.g. Chinese Opera Theatre) should be given to architecture in an international city.

Though ticket price is more expensive, audiences are served traditional tea and dim sum during the performance in Tea House Theatre. It also includes narration to help audiences gain insight into the history of chinese opera.
