「Although / Though」と「Despite / In spite of」の違いと使い分け

「〜にもかかわらず」を意味し“期待とは異なる状況”を説明する時に使われる「Although」「Though」「Despite」「In spite of」。例えば、寒い日に人はジャケットやジャンパーなど暖かい洋服を着ると「期待」しますが、シャツと短パンの格好をすることが“期待とは異なる状況”になります。そして、これらの英語は文章構成によって使い分けをする必要がありますが、初心者でも簡単に使い分けできるルールがあるのでご紹介します。

✔「Although」と「Though」は意味と構成は同じですが、「Though」のほうが「インフォーマル」です。
✔より強調して言いたいときは「Even though」を使いましょう。

Although it was cold today, he wore a shirt.
（今日は寒いのにもかかわらず、彼はシャツを着ました）
Though she studied very hard, she didn't pass her test.

He wore a shirt although it was cold today.
（今日は寒いのにもかかわらず、彼はシャツを着ました）
She didn't pass her test though she studied very hard.

✔「Despite」と「In spite of」は、意味と構成は同じですが「Despite」のほうがアメリカでは一般的によく使われる表現です。
✔「動名詞」は「ing」がつく「動詞」です。

In spite of studying very hard, she didn't pass her test.

✔ 意味と使い方は「Despite / In spite of」同じです。
✔ 最もフォーマルな言い方で日常会話ではあまり使われません。
